Well, It is the 3rd night out on the road with the motorbikes. I sit a bit nervous right now. Many strange things happening yesterday and today with guide. I am actually alot nervous. I will get to that story in a bit. First though yesterday. I thought I had seen such beautiful country the first day but oh man, it just got even better. We got up and had breakfast then headed up. It started out foggy and I hoped it would clear in a while which it fortunatly did as the day went on. We went to the very top of the Tonkenese Alps and then started heading down. We were so high up that it took most of the day to get down actually. The road, which I thought was a bit hairy ... read more

Day one and in the evening. I have survived. I am actually kind of blown away by where I am at right now. Which by the way I really don't know where I am at. I kind of think somewhere NE of Lao Cai. My guide Khun speaks almost no English. Actually let me rephrase that. He dosn't really speak any English. And I still cant even say thank you in vietnamese yet correctly after a week. So he and I are spending tons of time in deep philosaphical conversations. On a side note what is the deal with charades here? In the states if you made the motion of brushing your teeth people would know you meant to brush your teeth. I don't think I have had one charade actually work yet. Its probablly that ... read more

Day one up north. Well, it was very sad to say goodbye to Dave and Sarah. From now on I will be spelling her name correctly with an H at the end. Sorry Sarah for the screwup. I had one full day in Hanoi before I left for the train last night. We all had one more dinner. Dave found a very famous place that only serves one thing. Actually the book said "legendary". They serve fish that you cook in front of you yourself with a bunch of different things to mix in. We figured if you only serve one thing for years and years and people are still coming back you must have figured out something right. And it was great. Very different than some of the other meals we had had during the ... read more

Signing back in. Man, I am trying to write fast to catch up with everything. I leave in a few hours on an overnight train to the China border for a 7 day motorcycle tour of NW vietnam on a Minsk. I will not have internet access for that time. These blogs take a bunch of time. I have much more respect for all the other people who have posted theirs now! On the morning of the 2nd day in Halong bay I got up at 4:50 am to watch the sunrise. I was the only person up for almot 1.5 hours. Was so nice. I jumped in the water for a swim while the sun was rising. Was so moving to be floating in the bay in the dark and watch the sky get brighter ... read more

Well, back in Hanoi! I just got back from spending 3 days and 2 nights in Halong Bay. What do you say about one of the world's wonders? Wow!, just does not seem to do it. I can now see why its a "must do" while in Vietnam. I rank it up there with anything I have ever seen before. Basically, it all works like this. There are literally hundreds of places and people selling tours for the Bay here in Hanoi. It is really impossible to know which one is good or bad. You have to really do 2 things. Get a recommendation from someone who has just returned or find a concierge that you trust to steer you in the right direction. So, On a side track, I went with the 2nd option. I ... read more

About 4am this morning some amazing lightning and the loudest thunder I have ever heard. The rain came done so hard and fast, I dont think I had seen it rain like that before. It rained like that for about an hour but then tapered off to just a very slow drizzle. When I started out this morning I went with umbrella in hand but like I had been told by a friend before coming over, I really did not mind getting a little wet. No real change in the heat just a bit more humid. Probablly about 325% humidity now. My first stop was Ho Chi Min's Mauseleum. Its definitly something Vietnam is proud off. Military everywhere and you have to go through security. No camera's allowed, so those are confiscated then returned after. You ... read more

Ok. Its breakfast after my first night in Hanoi. All I can say is WOW. I don't even know where to begin. First off if Hell existed and there were 7 layers of Hell, The trip over here on the plane would have been the 8th layer. The traveling and sitting on the plane never ended. I did take a Lunesta and slept about 6 hours but that just left another 8 hours to get to Taipai. Thank god for the exit row or I would have gone insane. As it was my back was killing me sitting in that little seat. While in Taipai though it was too funny. I met a young man in the terminal from CA and he was travelling from Bali. His name was Chuck. Great guy. He worked in construction ... read more

Long day of travel. It was nice to be able to drive from Vail to Denver with Doug. It was much nicer to be with someone talking than just sitting on shuttle. My flight to LAX went smoothly and I actually arrived about 30 minutes ahead of schedule. I was very happy to have gotten the exit row. Its first class for poor people you know? I made it to John Wayne airport in Irvine and Ken was just getting off work and picked me up about 30 min after I landed. We went to a brewery and had a beer and talked. Was good to see him. Later, Karen made it home and we went to a very nice authentic Japanese rest. We had one of the bamboo rooms where we took our shoes off ... read more

I just got home last night. I had been at work for 2 weeks. Today is the last full day to get everything packed. It was really good to see that Scruffers was healthy and doing well. I have had a friend house sitting while I was gone and he is going to stay here for the next month as well. So the little girl will get her daily soft food! She has been following me around since I have been home. She likes to help pack. I went to the bank and got cash. I ended up taking $200 in 1's and $250 in 5's. It was sort of suprising how big a stack of cash that is. I am having a hard time packing it. Not putting it in my check in bag though. ... read more
