We had exactly one goal today--to see the Arlington National Cemetery. Since this is a bit far to walk (even though it is shorter than the 8 miles we walked yesterday), we bought a day pass for the Metro and took the subway, which was a very relaxing ride. The Metro was very quiet today, being a Saturday, but we still felt very safe. This is in contrast with the New York subway which can get a little concerning when ridership is low. The walk around the cemetery was very serene and solumn with lots of questions from the kids about names and who these people are. We toured the key sites and found ourselves finished just before lunch. Since this was our last 'have to see' spot, we were free to explore without direction for ... read more

Today we finished up our tour of the National Mall that included stops at the White House, Washington Monument (to pick up free tickets for our later visit to the top), National Archives, McDonald's for a cheap lunch, the WWII Memorial, back to the Washington Monument for our reservation, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, a half-price Frappe at Starbucks, then back to the Four Points for take out Domino's Pizza (courtesy of a Groupon). What a day! As for highlights from this busy day, we saw the President leave and fly right over our heads in Marine One from the South lawn of the White House. Unfortunately, we were headed toward the Washington Monument at the time and security wasn't letting anyone closer than a few hundred yards, so we couldn't really see ... read more

The day started off very early in order to catch the last commuter bus from Annapolis into Washington D.C. The trip is only 30 miles, but most transit options out of Annapolis go to Baltimore. A taxi was discussed, although it would have been a $75 fare. After a quick hot breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express, we had to (again) traverse several blocks without paved sidewalks in order to possibly catch the 7:00 am bus. To our dismay, the bus driver never stopped. A frantic call to the transit center ensured that the last 7:30 am bus would stop for us. The ride itself was very comfortable and we took the opportunity to have Grace work on a few of her school activities. After 15 minutes, I recognized the signs of motion sickness and began ... read more

Today started off with a cold and wet reminder that we are not in Texas anymore, and that it can still get cold in May. This morning, after a good hot breakfast at the Mount Vernon Hotel, we were awakened by a cold rainy walk to the light rail. To make things even more interesting, our rain jackets have mysteriously been left behind. Luckily, the kids' jackets were still packed and they stayed warm and relatively dry. The 35 minute ride to the end of the line dropped us of at the Cromwell station, where we had to run to the #14 bus to Annapolis. This 1 hour tour down Gov. Ritchie Hwy ended in the heart of historic Annapolis, the capitol of Maryland. Amazingly, the entire ride only cost about $1.50 for a one-way ticket. ... read more

This morning started off with a breakfast of granola bars and milk as the hotel did not have complimentary breakfast. The full size refrigerator came in handy to keep a gallon of milk that we bought yesterday. After breakfast, we walked to our next hotel (just a few blocks away) and dropped off our luggage. The hotel hopping was necessary because of the various deals that popped up over the last month--sometimes you can only find certain days on sale. Our second stay is at the Mount Vernon Hotel near Baltimore's Washington Memorial. This was an exceptional deal as I was able to take advantage of Expedia's Best Price Guarantee . They had the hotel for $104.30/night, and it was $104.29 at Priceline. Because of this 1 cent difference, Expedia gave me a $50 voucher towards ... read more

Day 1-Baltimore: The Airport: When we woke up this morning at 4:00 am, we remembered SW Airline's rule about baggage being free up to 50 lbs. We prayed our lone suitcase would be under this. However, upon weighing it at the airport, it was 58 lbs. At the ticket counter, Jason and I tried to cram rain jackets, book, cameras and anything else we could fit into Jason's backpack. Finally, we got it down to 50.5 lbs which worked with the attendant. Luckily Alex (16 months) slept the majority of the way there and their weren't any other hiccups except for the missing coffee cups on the plane. Luckily Jason and I don't drink coffee, but I think there were a couple worried passengers until they finally located the cups. ---Jason says "I still had hot ... read more

The idea of this trip started when I read Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel by Rolf Potts. While we aren't exactly planning a "long-term" or "world" trip, there were enough interesting points in this book that sparked my interest. Most likely, this is because whenever we travel as a family, we tend to enjoy just spending time doing what we would normally be doing on a weekend at home, but transplanted into another city with new surroundings, people, and stimuli. We enjoy visiting the local parks and malls, taking the subway to new areas, dining at local hot spots, and sometimes even people watching while our kids play on a playground--all activities you'd probably find us doing on any given Saturday. At some level, this is a simplification of Potts' ... read more

Packing for our 3 week adventure itself is an adventure. Imagine packing for 2 adults and 3 kids (ages 5, 3, and 1) and trying to fit it all into 1 suitcase. With 1 kid still in diapers at least a quarter of the suitcase is just diapers. Also, since we are trying to cut some costs so we can "adventure" longer, I've determined we need to make one meal a day ourselves. Therefore, I realized we need to provide room in our lone suitcase for this food. Thus in the end, our suitcase looks like a meal on wheels with a light amount of clothing (4 outfits per person including the clothes on our back). Another cost cutting measure is to minimize car rental and instead utilize mass transit as much as possible. In order ... read more
