Gran Canaria I hadn’t originally intended to include anything on Gran Canaria in this blog. For a few years I’ve been spending Christmas and the New Year in the Maspalomas area of Gran Canaria with a group of family and friends but the only travelling I tend to do while I’m there is between the pool and the bar. In previous years the prospect of coming to Gran Canaria has kept me going through the winter months. Every year I seemed to resent more and more having to get out of bed when it was cold, wet, dark and miserable outside, having to drive to work in the dark and drive home in the dark, and often not having time during the day to see how grey it was outside. The thought that in a couple ... read more

Going Home On the last morning I have a few hours to kill before I have to go to the airport. I have not yet seen a fridge magnet or a local football shirt anywhere so I set off into the center of Addis (by turning left out of the hotel!!) in search of these. I think it's a sign that the Ethiopian tourist industry is only just starting that they haven't started making tacky fridge magnets yet. I think I do really well to eventually find one. I've wandered around a lot of shops and been led on wild goose chase by someone who tells me he knows where all the fridge magnets and football shirts are and it's always just around the next corner. I eventually get offered three identical fridge magnets in one ... read more

The Long Drive Back to Addis Ababa The Strongest Cup of Coffee in The World ...... Ever! It's another early start as we have the long drive back to Addis Ababa today and we want to spend some time in the Awash National Park. We set out at about 5:30. By 8:30 we've reached the town of Asbe Tefari where we stop for breakfast. Lishan orders "double" coffees for us - I think this must mean double strength rather than a larger cup of coffee. Jane and I are nearly knocked out of our chairs when we taste it although Clarry happily drinks hers without any comment! I still declare it the "strongest coffee ever" Awash Isn't Awash With Wildlife By 11:00 we reach the entrance to the Awash National Park. Again we are joined by ... read more

Harar Again This morning Lishan joins us again for another walking tour of Harar. We walk around the city walls for a while and take in a traditional Harari house and the house of the famous poet, Arthur Rimbaud - OK. I actually know nothing about poetry but I've vaguely heard of Rimbaud from a reference in a Van Morrison song Rimbaud never actually lived in Arthur Rimbaud's House! The house is built on the site of the house he used to live in. It does, however, have a good collection of old black and white photographs of Harar - I'm a big fan of old black and white photographs. We are really taken with the Traditional Harari House, it is really cool inside and we could relax there all day. The main room of the ... read more

Harar - Friendly City, Friendly People, Friendly Kids and Friendly Hyenas {I Hope!!!} To Harar Our change of plan and detour to Harar goes much more smoothly than it could have done. We get back to our hotel in Addis Ababa at 12:30a.m. and get a couple of hours sleep before the three of us have to head back to the airport for the flight to Dire Dawa. At the airport everything runs smoothly, we have to take our shoes off a lot of times, and we get on the right plane. As promised by Baty, we are met by our new guide, Lishan, and a driver at the airport and we set out on the 1-hour drive to Harar. There's a slight hiccup when we get to Harar as we are told that ... read more

Lake Tana, the Blue Nile and Hippos Stuck Stuck Tuk Tuk We are near the end of our tour now. We should be flying to Addis Ababa this morning but our flight is cancelled and we choose to stay in Bahir Dar and try to reschedule things. Myself, Clarry and Jane are scheduled to go on from Addis Ababa to Harar tomorrow and we are not looking forward to the 13 hour drive after the flight to Addis! Jane has come up with the idea of getting an internal flight to the nearby city of Dire Dawa and then taking public transport to Harar and Baty has been looking into flights for us and trying to organise things with the tour co... read more

Island Hopping We spend the day on a boat trip on Lake Tana visiting some of the islands and the monasteries on them. We were supposed to make an early start but the boat we were going to use has broken down. A replacement boat has been traveling all night from the opposite side of the lake - I hope the captain gets the chance to get some sleep today! There's a further delay as our guide for the day doesn't show up and Baty has to find a last-minute replacement. There are about 20 monasteries on the islands in the lake. I'm not completely "monasteried out" yet but three or four and a pleasant boat ride would be enough for me! It's about a 3-hour boat ride to the first monastery, Narga Selassie. All of ... read more

To Bahir Dar A Tarmac Road!!! Another fairly early start as we set out at 8a.m. for the drive from Gondar to Bahir Dar. Bahir Dar is going to be our base for the next couple of days as we explore Lake Tana and The Blue Nile Falls. We are promised that the drive will be just 3 hours and we make good progress with the luxury of a tarmac road. There are so few bumps in the road that I can even write down some notes for this blog in the minibus! We stop to take photographs of a dog and some vultures with some roadkill - I think it's a donkey - at the side of the road. We arrive at Bahir Dar at the promised time and head straight for The Blue Nile ... read more

Gondar The Royal Enclosure Tuesday we spend the whole day visiting some of the sights of Gondar, one of the old capitals of Ethiopia. Top of the list for me is The Royal Enclosure which is where all the castles are. The sight of these medieval-looking castles must be one of the most unexpected sights in Africa. Someone makes the observation that they look similar in design to some of the castles in India. Each Ethiopian king, during this period, built themselves a new castle. There are a total of seven in the compound. The one exception to the castle-building seems to have been Iyasu, {I think it was him} who also made sure he built himself a decent sauna. From here we go to The Church of Debre Berhan Selassie, famous because it was supposedly ... read more

To Gondar Leaving the Mountains You always tend to wake up early when you're camping. Chef has somehow managed to make pancakes for everyone for breakfast this morning. We're out of the campsite by 8 a.m. and trekking for a couple of hours to the spot where we will meet up with the minibus. Just like yesterday, at this altitude any bit of uphill walking knocks me out. We trek for a couple of hours, again seeing some spectacular views and panoramas and passing through some large groups of baboons. The baboons seem completely unconcerned by us and ignore us passing through their "territory". After meeting the minibus we drive out of the park back to Debark where we drop off our guides, cook and scouts (the three guys with guns). We hang around here for ... read more
