West End Girls - Guest Bloggers, Heather and Jane return The majority of the group booked a snorkelling trip, whilst Heather and Jane set out in search of adventure. First, we ventured out for an authentic Honduran breakfast and watched the rest of the party leave the dock and sail away - only to pull into the shore about 100 metres further along. All disembarked and were gone for some time - why, we never really did find out, but suspected it might have been a desperately needed toilet stop or even a fridge magnet alert. {They obviously didn't spot that we were wearing flippers and snorkels when we came out of the shop! - Steve} Once we had seen them safely back on board and waved them off for the day, we set out on ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Northern » La Ceiba August 14th 2010

La Ceiba Friday 13th August It’s another 6 a.m. start and a long day’s travelling ahead as we head towards La Ceiba in Honduras. The first stage is a boat we’ve hired to take us from Livingston to Puerto Barrios. Gemma seems worried that we may get delayed somewhere along the way and is immediately concerned when the first thing our driver does is divert to get fuel. There’s one more stop to pick up another passenger with this morning’s catch and then our boat is speeding towards Puerto Barrios. Everything is running smoothly as at Puerto Barrios a minibus is waiting to take us to Honduras. We reach the border between Guatemala and Honduras within 40 minutes and again there are no real delays in getting across. There does seem to be an unusually large ... read more

Thoughts from Playa Blanca - by guest bloggers Heather and Jane All that could be heard was the lapping of the warm Caribbean waves and the gentle snoring of our friend Steve. Suddenly, we heard a shuffling sound. We looked up to see Steve’s shoes sidling towards the water’s edge in an attempt to drown themselves in shame. ‘Stop, stop - don’t do it’ we shouted ‘we’ll never get Steve home in one piece if you go - if you don’t protect his feet, anything could happen!’. We should explain why this extraordinary event was occurring. A couple of days ago, our group was boarding the minibus from Antigua to Flores when it became apparent that a foul stench was emanating from a plastic bag on Steve’s lap. The British stiff upper lip trembled, and the ... read more

Livingston Wednesday 11th August Today we make the journey from Flores to Livingston. The only way into Livingston {I think} is by boat so a minibus picks up from our hotel to take us to the town of Rio Dulce on the river of the same name. Here we take a boat to take us down to Livingston which is at the mouth of the Rio Dulce on the Caribbean Sea. The river banks on either side are very green and uncultivated. Occasionally we see small settlements at the side of the river and small children are sent out to try and sell us starfish and trinkets. We stop at Restaurant El Viajero for lunch {The place isn’t as remote as I’m probably making it sound - they have satellite TV and we’ve phoned ahead our ... read more

Flores and Tikal Monday 9th August This morning I feel like I’m back on holiday again. I have to be packed, checked out of the hotel and on the bus by 5a.m. Today is a very long day’s travelling, crossing much of Guatemala from Antigua to Flores which is going to be our base for visiting the Mayan ruins at Tikal. The theory behind the really early start is that we have to drive through Guatemala City and we hope to get through before the city becomes gridlocked with the rush hour traffic. The group are all wide awake and on the bus on time and we are introduced to our driver, Pedro. Pedro is an optimist. He doesn’t have a sense of direction, he doesn’t have a GPS device and he doesn’t have a map. ... read more

Antigua at Last Saturday 7th August I eventually get into Antigua a day later than planned. The morning after the detour to Nicaragua I’m back at the airport before 6a.m. for a flight that eventually takes off at 9:30 for an uneventful 1 hour flight back to Guatemala City. Antigua is about an hour’s drive from here but a taxi only costs $30 {I later learn that I should have bargained it to $25}. My impression of Guatemala City as I am driven out is that I have not missed much. The main road out of the city seems to be mainly lined with branches of every American fast food outlet in existence - this just strengthens my urge to get to Cuba as soon as possible! I am impressed, though, with the detail the Guatemalans ... read more

Guatemala Here I Come From Woodhouse to Antigua. It’s a long haul from Mansfield Woodhouse to Antigua in Guatemala. I travel down to London the day before my flight and then it’s up at stupid o’clock to get the tube up to Heathrow for my early morning flight. I’m normally not very alert in the mornings so my first visit to the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow is wasted on me. I’m not awake enough to really appreciate it or form any opinions. Everything seems to run fairly smoothly though. In fact today is a good day - the volcano is behaving itself and the cabin crew aren’t on strike. I strike lucky because the guy I’m sitting next to on the flight has recently been travelling in Guatemala. He’s formed a very positive impression on ... read more

Cape Town Yet Again Tuesday 23rd March It’s a short drive from Hermanus back to Cape Town as the tour I am on takes me back towards Cape Town for the third time. There’s still plenty for me to do in Cape Town, which is rapidly becoming one of favourite cities. Being on an organised tour and having the “bus” available, it’s a chance to see some of the attractions a bit further out from the city. Stellenbosch Stellenbosch is a university town and the centre for South Africa’s wine industry about 50km from Cape Town. It was founded by Simon van der Stel who modestly named it after himself! The town is the second oldest Dutch settlement and still retains a lot of old Dutch architecture in the town centre. With it’s distinctive but smart ... read more

South Africa - The Garden Route (And A Bit More) A lot of tours to South Africa just visit Cape Town and the Garden Route. You could easily spend a couple of weeks along the Garden Route- we have just a couple of days. Tsitsikamma Our starting point is Tsitsikamma National Park on the Indian Ocean. We spend a couple of days camping at the campsite here within the park. This campsite has been voted South Africa’s top campsite for several years. It’s easy to understand why, with beautiful forested surroundings, good facilities and our tents pitched next to the Indian Ocean. The downside of it being voted the top campsite and it being a Bank Holiday weekend in South Africa is that the campsite is really busy. Fortunately {or unfortunately for the other campers} some ... read more

Africa » Lesotho March 18th 2010

Southern Africa - Lesotho Tuesday 17th March Our journey back towards Cape Town takes us through the mountain kingdom of Lesotho for a couple of days. The kingdom was formed when the Basotho people were forced into the Drakensburg and Malutimountains as a defence against the Zulus and Boers in the Nineteenth Century. Probably because of these origins and because of their remote position in the mountains they have managed to retain a lot of their culture and traditions and avoid becoming part of South Africa. It is some of this culture that we are hoping to see during our short stay here. The downside of the Basotho holding on to a lot of their traditional beliefs is that it is going to be difficult for us to take photographs of people, particularly when we are ... read more
