Patagonia is breathtaking.Good luck with weather. I might have traded in some Spanish for Italian and Portuguese (portañol) trying to converse with other tourists. Lost in Los antiguos but I'm trying to make my way to Chile today.... read more

Afternoon hike El Chaltén

Not thinking too much about it, I hopped a boat and ended up in Uruguay. I arrived in Montevideo around 7pm Sunday Dia de Los Reyes. I ended up in a parade, not at a parade, in a parade of traditional drumming and dancing. We did not stop until well into the night. Yesterday, my heart and mind were in San Francisco. 6500 miles can't stop me from being a mom. I managed to wander around the city, see a very nice exhibit of black and white photos from the 80s, eat some veggie paella, and sing traditional Argentinian/ Brazilian songs poolside for the evening. I passed the day today at the beach, where the fish were jumping right next to me. I stood out as a tourist because I didn't have my mate tea and ... read more

The first thing i had to find when I arrived in Buenos Aires was the bus to the city. I asked where to get the bus and was delivered to the bus stop. Then everyone made sure I had enough coins for the bus. A young man insisted on giving me 3 pesos for his piece of mind. I've passed the last few days with a crazy Colombiana. Yesterday we meant to go to the Eco reserve but stopped for some cervesas negras and sat in front of a record store listening to music and sipping on Quilmes. Next thing we knew it was time to go to the Armenian cultural center for a milonga. I may have agreed to drive to Patagonia with Juan Carlos, a fine older gentleman who dances tango 3 nights a ... read more

Samba in the street, bala preta. Lapa street party. Gay clubs in Copacabana. I danced until my feet fell off. Always surrounded by friendly Brazilians. One said "You are so-o happy, it's contagious." Saw the sites, swam in the Atlantic. Watched helicopter rescue stranded swimmers. More later.... read more

I arrived in Brazil to record heat. At 10am I saw a bank thermometer read 39°C, 10 minutes later it read 41' followed by 43. Apparently it got up to 45°C. That's 113 °F for non metric folks. All I could do was cool off in the Atlantic ocean. Which was the same idea the tranny I was walking with had. She had to have been burning up under that weave. She was close to the sun too, about 6'6". She wasbwearing short shorts and some kind of anime style shirt. Sorry, I didn't get a pic. Later, after things cooled down to the 90s, I found myself watching the sunset on Ipanema. I wasn't trying to get there but there are worse places to wander into. The beach was steamy! Finally made it to the ... read more

In preparation for my impending adventure I had to obtain two visas, one for Brazil, the other for Bolivia. Luckily there is a Brazilian consulate here in San Francisco. I go on-line and navigate through a few stealthy fake consulate sites until I get to the real page. I fill out the application and get document control number, never in a million years did i think that i would have put document control number and Brazil in the same paragraph but there you have it. I go to schedule the appointment and there it is, all gray. Huh? No spots? Their web page must be down. I call and get automated info. I email them and get an automated response "due to world wide supply problems we are not issuing visas...". I email them again trying ... read more
