Geo: 40.678, 14.7659Well as the title says it's been a very varied day. We started out thinking we would be going to Sorrento, decided last night to sleep in to get some much-needed rest. By the time we got to the train station and heard that the trip to Sorrento would take an 1-1.5 hours with a change of stations in Pompei by bus or walking a couple of kilometers or taking the bus for 2 hours each way we decided to skip it... we didn't feel like doing either of those things. So plan B, take the ferry to Positano, well that would take about 2 hours each way and by the time we got there, we'd have 1.5 hours to look around, that with 4 hours on a ferry plus paying 30 euros for ... read more

Geo: 40.678, 14.7659Forgot about the time change, so got up an hour earlier, didn't really matter as I woke up naturally at the earlier hour... had the chance to lay in bed and upload photos from my phone to yesterday's post, the internet was faster and allowed me to do so at the earlier hour maybe too many users of the wifi at night? The hostel had a great breakfast, was expecting only a croissant and tea or coffee. They had scrambled eggs, salame, cheese, yogurt, cereal, nutella, toast, juice, milk, fresh fruit, etc... very nice. We then found our way to the ferry station and paid 8 euros to take the ferry from Salerno to Amalfi, beautiful ride, water very calm. Got to practice my Italian skills with a person on the ferry, nice to be ... read more

Geo: 40.678, 14.7659After packing last night and getting up at midnight and then 5 am, I couldn't go back to sleep but stayed in bed until the alarm went off at 7. Surprisingly it's now 8:30 and I'm not exhausted but am ready bed fairly soon, we'll see how that goes! Our landlady was kind enough to call the taxi for us yesterday and arranged for it to pick us up close to the apt. the service there calls you up a few minutes before the pickup time to confirm and gives you a code of sorts, ours was brescia24, I guess so they don't pick up the wrong person, then you are supposed to press 1 to confirm. Well we hadn't had the call and it was 9:05 or so, so I called our landlady ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823I'm going to keep this short as it was a very busy day and I'm very tired! ;-) Got up about 7 am, the goal was to leave by 8:15, we left about 8:25ish... close enough! We walked to the Vatican Museum and walked past hundreds of people standing in line to get in. We had bought our tickets online, we still had to be in a line for a short while to get through security but it moved fast, then had another quick special "line" for those that bought the audio guide in advance, so no waiting to speak of. The Vatican is so large and is a bit confusing as the "map" really isn't one if you ask a few of the employees along the way where you are you will do ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823Woke up today at about 7 ish... did more research on the iPad problems, thank you, Kathy, for your messages, I tried to respond at the time but it didn't go through. So I have downloaded DropBox again, had deleted it trying to get more space. It allowed me to do so and it literally has been downloading my photos since this morning, it is now 9:36 pm, I have NO IDEA how large the photo files are, I think they are something like 6.2 Mb each?? does that make sense? anyway by the morning, I should have some memory back after I delete the photos from my iPad... if you have ideas on how to do that so I"m not doing it one by one, I'm all ears! so not sure if I'll ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823Just thought I'd say hi to everyone! just sitting at the table enjoying my second cup of tea after having some scrambled eggs, listening to the street noises... Here are some examples of the life that is happening at our feet this morning - 3 men are re-stuccoing a building kitty-corner from ours, an ambulance made it's way to Campo di'Fiori through this very narrow street, shopkeepers are sweeping outside their shops, others are talking on their cell phones while making their way to work?, motorcycles are going by, people are calling to each other, laundry is hanging out to dry. It's a lively area, I'm enjoying the window open and listening to it all, right now it's 9:16 and Karen is upstairs doing her thing and I'm about to get into the shower. ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823Another sunny day in Roma! better weather than has been forecasted which is great, though hard to know how to dress and what to bring. I did learn my lesson so have been bringing my new poncho and umbrella with me though haven't needed them since I didn't have them but needed them! Our landlady came by this morning to collect the damage deposit in cash, she will be bringing it back on Friday or Saturday before we leave assuming we do no damage, don't think there will be a problem. She was very nice and helpful, she doesn't know her schedule yet so we told her to just come by on Friday even if we're gone so we don't have to come back from our touring and leave the money on the table ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823We decided to sleep in this morning and help Karen get over jet lag and I was just tired! I got up about 9 ish, had breakfast, showered, added photos to Thursday's blog, etc... We then got out of the apt around 12 ish... bought our Roma Passes on the way to the Colosseum, walked past A LOT of people standing in the line to buy a ticket, probably would have just given up if we had had to do that! Bought the audio guide and enjoyed relearning about the Colosseum! It's all new again after 50!!! ;-)We then made our way over to the Forum and Palatine Hill, we got there at 4 it closes at 6:15- 6:30 so we thought we'd just have enough time if we didn't dawdle. Unfortunately, it was ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823It was a bit of a long night, there was a nice crowd right below our apt, and they were celebrating something, maybe the soccer win? Photo for proof ;-) Well, a great day today! Got up and was able to make myself a breakfast of two scrambled eggs with some picante (spicy) salami, yumm... we then left to find Rome Baptist Church, it was my 4th time there, love it, very welcoming, good message, great to be with so many people of different nationalities. After seeing so many Jesus' on the cross, as a baby, or Mary and other saints glorified it was wonderful to worship in a simple church with like-minded believers, very refreshing! After this, we walked down Via Condotti, the most famous shopping street and probably the most expensive place to ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823Had a bit of a sad goodbye to my very nice hostess, she had called the taxi the day before and made sure it picked me up. The taxi driver got me to the station in good time and I waited and watched the board for 1/2 hour before they showed the "binario" or line the train would be coming in on. Almost got on the wrong one! God is so good to me, I noticed something wasn't right and sure enough it wasn't, had emerged on the wrong side... anyway alls well that ends well! made on the right train, it ended up being 18 minutes late anyway. Found Karen at the airport after texting back and forth a bit, ate lunch there before getting back on the Leonardo Express to Rome, taxied ... read more
