Our plan for ticking of the sights was one or two each morning, a lunch break then shopping for the afternoon. It worked really well as we ended up in a different area for shopping each time. We covered off Louvre, Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, Sacre Coeur, Pompidou and a river cruise. We also went to a Lido show one night, and another night to Trocadero for a night viewing of the Eiffel tower. All these sights were busy with tourists but we didn't have to queue for more than five minutes anywhere which was much appreciated. The hawkers were out in force at every location. There were portrait drawings, friendship braids, gambling magic tricks, and music performers at Sacre Coeur, glowing whirlygig things at Trocadero and Eiffel towers, scarves, and handbags everywhere. Our first full day revolved around the Eiffel tower (as opposed to shops, seeing as it was Sunday and they were shut!). We hadn’t glimpsed it on arriving the day before, and we were all keen to spot it. We had a booking for the top at 3pm, so spent the day walking towards it from the centre of Paris (Hotel de Ville near the Ile de Cite) through the Louvre (outskirts), Jardin des Tuileries, place de la Concorde and along the river. The atmosphere was relaxed and French, with everyone out enjoying the day. Cyclists and pedestrians seem to have priority, even on busy roads, and drivers all seem to be so courteous. There are a huge number of cyclists everywhere, and not the lycra clad racing ones, but the cute bikes with baskets, with ... read more

Our relaxing time in Vendome has sadly come to an end. Our few weeks have zipped by, with a mixture of ‘touristy’ days and ‘hanging out’ days. The pace of life seems so relaxed here – maybe it’s because we’re on holiday, maybe it’s the warm weather, maybe it’s the small town, but I really think it is just the French way. So much importance is placed on food, and the time required, to prepare and enjoy it with family and friends. Shops are shut more than they’re open, and so many seem to rely on the Friday market for their food shopping. We were happy to eat out most nights, as there was a good selection of restaurants to choose from. The nights I cooked were only when we had especially bought something interesting looking, ... read more

Phillipe very kindly offered to be tour guide again today which was fantastic. We wouldn't find half the places without him. We went along the Loir valley. The Loir which is the river flowing in front of our house is a tributary to the Loire. Phillipe makes leadlight windows and is involved with a charitable organisation that helps restore and maintain old buildings and churches. He took us to a barn from the 14th century that their group has been given to restore. Once restored, they plan to hold exhibitions and concerts in it to further help with their fundraising efforts. It’s a three year restoration process as they only gather once a week for half a day to work on it, and it seems to be more of a social gathering than a highly productive ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Cheverny May 3rd 2011

After a morning shopping in Blois we got to Cheverney chateaux in time to see the feeding of the dogs. They keep around 100 french hounds there (for hunting). They were cute dogs and certainly seemed to have a sense of smell. About 10 minutes before the keeper turned up with the food they all got excited with their noses in the air. Their food got laid out while they were locked in a different area. They were near hysterical by that point jamming each other up against the gate, and climbing on top of each other to be the first closest to the food. It reminded me of crowd riots at soccer games where people get crushed. Cheverny was a lovely homely castle. It was very well furnished with everyday living items from centuries gone ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City April 29th 2011

The atmosphere in the whole of London was electric. Every window display in every shop had some tribute to the wedding. Flags were everywhere as were the souvenir sellers. Selfridges had a royal tea party going on in their window with masked royals acting out the scenes. We wanted to watch the events near to the action but with a big screen to have some idea what was going on. We got to the outskirts of Trafalger square and could see glimpses of the screen when tiptoeing and straining our necks. People were taking every vantage point possible from the top of shop verandas phone boxes lamp posts to even upturned metal shopping baskets from nearby Boots chemist (the security guard allowing it just for the occasion ). It was awesome being part of such a ... read more

An easy trip to London from Vendome. Phillipe drove us 40 min to Tours airport, 1 hour flight into Stanstead London, 45 min bus ride into Stratford and around the new Olympic site, to where Rhonda met us and took us to her apartment near by.  Great to see Rhonda after four years from when we were here last. And her new apartment now three years old. Lots of reminiscing. Although her apartment was small - bedroom, lounge, kitchen, and bathroom were the only spaces - we fitted in fine and were quite happy. We were able to keep an eye on comings and goings in the street just like Rhonda and even watch Sophia out in the street playing with a neighbourhood girl Molly she befriended.  Other than the wedding we only had time and ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Villandry April 26th 2011

Phillipe offered to be our tour guide today so we chose Villandry as he's a bit of a gardener. It was good to see him again and hear how the rest of his NZ trip went and to clear up a few of our French queries (like why so many houses and public buildings had French flags and flowers out yesterday - some war commemoration - fitting as we'd been thinking about Anzac day) Anyway off to villandry with two grumpy girls not enjoying the second early morning start in a row. I'm pleased to say I was completely relaxed with his driving in his home country. Even despite a near accident at the first intersection as he forgot to revert to the French give way rules and drove through as though he was still in ... read more

Castle number two - tick. Although it was castle number one on our list. This is the supersized most extravagant and most visited of them all. And it did take our breath away from our first glimpse of it during one of our many u-turn manoeuvers on narrow country roads. It really is impressive with it's size and whole cityscape of turrets domes and sculptures on top. We were pleased our early morning start got us half way up the number one carpark rather than the other parks a couple of kilometers away. This place certainly was geared up for the tourists with markets restaurants and souvenir shops forming a little village within the grounds. The grounds were very unimpressive. Little more than badly kept paddocks. Although the large forest surrounding the castle is of note ... read more

Easter vigil mass in French was a very interesting experience. We'd planned to go on Sunday so on our way home from tea (at a creperie -yum crepe Suzette) on Saturday night we walked past the church to check the times. As it happened hundreds were arriving for the vigil mass so we joined in despite the girls feeling underdressed in their shorts. The service started with a huge bonfire on the alter. I was starting to panic about it getting out of control when the flames were a metre high but no one else was showing any concern even when it got to two metres high. The lights were all out and the 600 or so congregation all had a lit candle each so it was quite an impressive sight. Even with the smoke billowing ... read more
