Sunday October 7th An early rise today saw us ready to leave by 7.30am. We had only been ready for a couple of minutes when Peter called out and we proceeded to pack our luggage into his car. We made a stop at a bakery before arriving at the ferry terminal. Rags was surprised at the size of these car ferries even though we had seen a couple on our way past on the bus over the last week. Although our ticket said to be there at 8.00am it was typically almost 8.30am before the gates opened and we were able to board. However, it did promptly leave Dubrovnic at 9.00am. There were plenty of seats and we found a comfy one in the bar area. Here we spread out and passed the time reading our ... read more

Dubrovnik October 1st London, Gatwick was easy and efficient. We didn't have to officially arrive in the country but were able to go through another security check into the transit area of the airport. Here Judy lost a small pair of scissors that were in the medical pouch that she had moved from check in to hand luggage before leaving Mexico.(due to still not feeling well) They had already been through 2 American Airline checks without being found - ridiculous isn't it? Arrival in Dubrovnik was also a breeze. Officials took a quick look at our passports and we quickly moved to where our luggage was already waiting before going through the doors and seeing Peter and Rachel immediately! From the airport we drove along the coast to our new home. We could already see that ... read more

Friday 21st September After an early start we arrived at the bus stop before 8.30am which took us to the harbour. Of course we were early and almost went on the wrong boat! We started chatting with another fellow who had the same ticket as us. His name was Mark Oman and he was here writing a movie script set in Vallarta during the fiesta for the Day of the Dead. The working title for this is “Always not Forever”. By the time we boarded the boat we still only numbered a dozen and this included only 7 gringos. It was glorious cruising south along the Bay of Banderas, the breeze blowing gently, the sun masked by some clouds and the captain taking us close to the land to explain the various sights. Our first stop ... read more

Friday - Saturday 14th-15th September We got some antibiotics from a local chemist to do something about Judy's stomach problem and it seemed to be working by Saturday evening. We went to CyC and met the regulars there again, we really have been accepted! Whilst there the heavens opened and it came down in torrents. By about 8.30 it still hadn't stopped so we went with Trevor and Sally in their Jeep Liberty to a restaurant, Es Cuentros. They are regulars here and we were led to a table and given a torch to read the menu as the place was only lit by candles - not good for older eyes! Their 'happy hour' goes from 8-10pm so Rags gave the red wine a little hammering! Great night in a very interesting atmosphere (the 2 ladies ... read more

Friday 7th September This morning we met the challenge of what we have nicknamed “Pancho's Ladder” rather than Jacobs Ladder in Perth. There are 200 steps compared to about 250 but with the humidity here it isn't any easier! With several of the locals we did our 3 (or slightly less for J) climbs before jumping into the ocean to cool off. Unfortunately, the ocean temperature is like a tepid bath and not very cooling so we had to test the pool as well when we got back to the condo. Rosa, the cleaning lady was in for the second time this week, not much to do as we keep the place fairly tidy. She looks for work however, and pulled apart our made up bed and changed the sheets again, took the towels, and to ... read more

Friday 31st August After an early (7am) start we made our way to the TTUR bus (an aircon public bus) stop. We decided to try this way rather than the easy way of grabbing a taxi as we had enough time to change our mind if it didn't work. This was Judy's idea of a bit of a challenge! The first bus ignored our wave as we weren't exactly at his stop, the second one took off as soon as it dropped off the passengers. Nothing like the buses in Acapulco who stopped everywhere. The third one we caught and arrived at the Central Camionaire with an hour to spare. On leaving the terminal the bus driver made a short detour to pick up a woman and 2 young children. They stayed in the front section ... read more

Monday 27th August This morning we decided to treat ourselves to a full breakfast at one of the restaurants we had seen last night in the Zocalo. Firstly though we packed our backpacks as we had to catch a taxi at 1300 to the airport. Breakfast was great and we both ate enough to last us for some time. Judy had scrambled eggs Mexican style, Rags had hotcakes - 3 large ones smothered in maple syrup even he found hard to finish! The heavens opened whilst we were having our meal so we waited for a break. We headed off for the Fuerte De San Diego, a fort built for protection from English & Dutch buccaneers. It is now a museum and, as we soon found out, closed on Mondays! To add to our frustration the ... read more

Thursday 23rd August An early wake up enabled us to call our mothers before arriving at the main bus station an hour before our 10am departure. Another relaxing day sitting in a slow bus that stopped at almost every small village collecting passengers. We thought it was supposed to be an express but we think since there were so few passengers they combined the local bus and the express. We arrived in Acapulco about 6pm. The taxi driver insisted on taking us to his recommended hotel, so Judy stayed in the taxi while Rags checked it out. Needless to say we continued on until we arrived at the place we had selected the Etel Suites which turned out to be cleaner, bigger, cheaper and were high atop the hill overlooking old Acapulco. Once we depositied our ... read more

Tuesday 21st August The taxi ordered by the hotel was waiting for us at 8am and had us at the airport by 8.30. There, an officious young lady searched our belongings quite thoroughly before we were eventually allowed to board a twin engined Cessna with 4 other passengers. Even if we were armed, bomb-carrying terrorists what real damage could we do? Perhaps this whole terrorist thing is being overplayed! Nice easy flight, 29 minutes to our destination. Unfortunately the plane's perspex windows were crazed and sun-damaged so we could see little detail below. On arrival at Puerto Escondido we noticed there were holes in the leading edges of the wings, crudely patched with fibreglass! Glad we didn't see that before we got on. The bus alternative wouldn't have been pleasant - over 7 hours for 300 ... read more

Saturday 18th August We had packed the day before, worked out a timetable & route to get to the train and were ready to go! We woke up early, showered and went out for breakfast at Cafe Popular next door. Good food at a decent price. As we left the hotel we stopped at the opposite corner & took one last look and a picture. Both of us were looking forward to a quieter environment. We made our way carefully through the road maintenance area on our way to the station. As we entered the Metro Rags commented on how sure-footed Judy was on the stairs with all the gear she was carrying when he slipped on the last step and only his backpack saved him from crashing prone onto the marble. As it was, he ... read more
