Day 9 Glacier National Park WOW! They say that pictures can say a thousand words.....I hope that our photos will give everyone a small understanding of the amazing beauty that we witnessed today!! We started our day early . . . 6:45 AM . . . I thought we were on vacation! We drove the “Going to the Sun” road and saw an amazing view at every turn. This road was built in 1926 using primarily pick and shovel. The surveyors repelled from mountain tops to mark where to blast and it was hand tools from there on. Once the roadbed was roughed in steam shovels were able to help out. Even by today’s standards this road is an engineering marvel. Since its construction, the road has under gone only Band-Aid or maybe duct tape repairs. ... read more

Day 7 Enderlin - Glendive, MT Visiting with Aunt Gladys and Uncle Palmer was a wonderful way to start our day! Uncle Palmer came over to visit as Aunt Gladys made a yummy warm breakfast for us. We experienced our first overcast morning with a short rain shower as we ate. Palmer walked back home and brought his puppy over to play. We caught up on some family news, looked at a few pictures, and got advice about what roads to take and what sites not to miss. Next, the job we were not looking forward to . . .de-bugging the van. Gladys handed us a bottle of Windex and a roll of paper towels. We had to scrub the windshield and headlights. Don offered to take the van over to the carwash, but what was ... read more

Day 6 Rapid City, SD - Sisseton, SD - Enderlin, ND Another long day....but....WOW....what a day!! Ok...so Yesterday was a very long day!! Today we only have to see several major national monuments and drive back across South Dakota....No Problem!! We started our day with a hearty breakfast buffet at the hotel. Next stop,Mount Rushmore. The monument is very accessible to everyone. It gave me a very patriotic feel as we looked at it....but the rest of it was rather commercial. I like my national parks to be a bit more.....rustic. Next, we drove off to find the Crazy Horse Memorial. Again, cool....but...we did a drive by. They wanted $27 to see the unfinished carving that we could see from the road...so we did. A park ranger gave us a heads up on Custer St... read more

Day 5 St.Louis to Rapid City, SD Up and rolling by 5AM.....yep it is still dark.....go back to sleep....I'll wake you when we get to Kansas City! This was the day that we worried about the most. It was our longest driving day....but we made it!! We started west out of St. Louis and made a hard right in Kansas City! We found that Highway 29 was filled with road construction so we jumped off in Omaha and found a very nice road in Nebraska. Route 30 to Columbus. Columbus, Nebraska had a strange, but wonderful little surprise. We found Pawnee Park. There were memorials that were dedicated to just about....everyone. There is a bell tower dedicated to Columbus and his voyage across the sea. A monument to veterans from almost every war. A piece of ... read more

We woke up this morning to the smell of homemade waffles and bacon drifting through the house. Although we weren’t traveling today it was to be a jam-packed day of activities and one that I was looking forward to. After breakfast, the first item on the agenda for the ladies was an appointment at Washington University. Sarah, Jill, and her mom (Grammie) were scheduled to take a tour and talk to some people in the admissions department. As for me, I had a World Cup soccer game to watch (it turned out to be a great game with the USA winning and moving through to the next elimination round). About noon the ladies picked me up for a much anticipated (by Jill) lunch at Steak n’ Shake (one of her favorite hangouts when ever she goes ... read more

Day 3 Chicago to St. Louis WOW!!!! We love Chicago!! The University of Chicago is amazing! Both Sarah and I fell in love with the school, the city, and the town! The people all have that mid-west hospitality and the city is beautiful. There are amazing parks, beaches . . . even for your dog . . .art, history, culture, music. . . WOW!!! We ate lunch in a small. . . very small sandwich shop Medici's near the university, the food was amazing and . . . the t-shirts proclaimed that . . . Obama eats here! Off to St.Louis . . . and more importantly . . . Grammies house!!! We once again had blue skies and smooth sailing. What is a road trip without a few historical opportunities and unscheduled stops along ... read more

Day Two: Pittsburgh to Chicago We woke up to brilliantly sunny skies and a cool warmth (if that makes any sense). Sunday night we parked the van on the street to avoid the $17 parking fee at the hotel, so I got to experience the beautiful weather as I went out to plunk quarters in the meter. Forbes Avenue was unbelievably busy; after all it was a sleepy city Sunday afternoon when we arrived at our hotel and the street only carried a light amount of traffic. Monday morning shone a much different light on what turns out to be a very important thoroughfare in the Steel City. People carrying briefcases or messenger bags hustled and bustled to the many office buildings in the area, most of which seemed to belong to, or somehow connected with, ... read more

GO...Day one of our journey... We left Baltimore and headed north on 83 . . .oops . . . we were supposed to go west on 70 ? No problem...U-Turn! It's not an adventure unless you have a few U-turns! We had a pleasant and uneventful ride up to the Pittsburg area. Jimmy Buffett on the radio and blue skies! None of us in the car are big fast food fans, but when the opportunity came to stop and see The Worlds Biggest Big Mac . . . well . . . who could pass that by? The Big Mac was first introduced in 1967 by Jim Delligatti, a McDonald's franchise owner in Uniontown, Pa. A year later, it became a staple of McDonald's menus nationwide. The Big Mac Museum Restaurant, which will serve a full McDonald's ... read more

Welcome to our travel blog. My name is Don and one of my favorite pastimes is driving. I enjoy sliding behind the wheel and heading off into the sunset (or sunrise). I am fortunate that I have found someone that likes to hit the open road as much as I do. As a matter of fact, the 6,300 mile trip we are about to undertake was Jill’s brainchild. When she first told me about it I enthusiastically said yes. However, after giving it some thought, some of the luster tarnished and I began to have second thoughts. After all, I have well over a million miles under my belt and know some of the things that can happen to make a trip like this less than pleasurable. A few years ago I made a decision to ... read more
