Third Day – June 29th We survived the stale cigarette smoke and had a pretty good night’s sleep. If we had been given a non-smoking room as requested my impression of HOJO would have been a whole lot more positive. Let’s not forget, this was a cheap room. I think with taxes and fees added by Travelocity the total came to about $42.00 – you can’t get much cheaper than that. So, overall the room was a good value. The sheets were clean and the bed was comfy. Never mind that the carpet was stained, the air conditioner was God-awful noisy, and the shower curtain rod was pulled out of the wall, it was still a good value. We then took advantage of our “Free Breakfast”, pretty much what you’d expect, hot ... read more

Second Day – June 28 After a good night’s rest we joined Sharon, who graciously shared her house with us, for some morning refreshments and congenial conversation before heading out to meet our friend Jeremy for breakfast. Today’s plan was to drive from Atlanta to Pensacola. The trip covers roughly 350 miles. We met Jeremy in Norcross, GA (a northern suburb of Atlanta) at a local chain restaurant called the Flying Biscuit. They offered a unique breakfast menu and Jeremy, Jill, and I enjoyed our breakfast. Chatting with Jeremy for an hour or so we caught each other up on what was going on in our lives and vowed that we would try to get together again sooner rather than later. Before saying our final good byes, we enlisted Jeremy’s help for finding a ... read more

First day – June 27, 2013 Today started pretty early, got up at 4:15 and we were on the road by 5:00. The first few hours were rather uneventful driving out I-70 to I-81. Traffic was relatively light and a great change from fighting the hordes of people trying to get around DC. However, I-81 was loaded with trucks and after a while we got tired of driving around them or getting out of their way. Jill grabbed the map and found an alternate route for us – down a stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The sky was extremely overcast and heavy fog hung in the valleys between blue-hued mountain ridges. It wasn’t the best day for sight seeing but driving the smooth-surfaced, twisting road was a fun experience. This might be a ... read more

Vacation 2013 Although not our longest trip, a planned 4,800 miles, it might be our most diverse. We’ll go from eating grits to back bacon and hearing “Y’all” to “eh”. We will be making a giant loop around half of the USA. Our trip will take us from Baltimore to Atlanta then to ‘The Big Easy” via Talladega, Pensacola and Mobile. After sampling the beignets, po’boys, and muffulettas we’ll head north along the mighty Mississippi to the gateway to the west: St. Louis. There we’ll watch 4th of July fireworks under the arch and eat ribs, drink the local brew (Budweiser), and dine at Steak and Shake at least once. After resting and doing laundry in St Louis for a few days, we’ll strap ourselves in for the long drive to North Dakota. Since ... read more

Day 3 - June 29th We said our good-byes to our house-mates and hosts last night since we knew we had to leave early this morning. We had reservations on the Cape May- Lewes Ferry for the first sailing at 7:30. We stealthily left the house about 6:15 since we wanted to be there early (as the ferry people suggested). They have the right to search both vehicles and people. Today, they did neither – to us anyway. It did appear that they searched a truck that approached the gate about 15 minutes after we lined up to board the ship. We were the third vehicle in the queue and as a result, got a front row spot on the deck of the M.V. Delaware. We left the dock about 7:35 and cruised off into the ... read more

Day 2 – June 28th After a hearty breakfast, Emily, Mattie, Jill, and I headed to Miss Chris Marina where we had reserved kayaks for a morning of exploring the back waters and bays of Cape May. Although Jill has experience canoeing, none of us had actually been in a kayak before – we expected that, if nothing else, it would be an “interesting” time. Jill and I each had our own kayak and the girls opted to share a larger tandem boat. I expected that the kayak would be unstable and would tip over easily. To my surprise it was quite stable and was relatively easy to maneuver. Emily and Mattie had a bit rougher time since a certain bit of coordination is required for a double kayak to go where it’s intended. Being the ... read more

Day 1 – June 27th We were up before the sun today. Even though we tried to prepare for the trip before today, there seemed to be numerous little things that had been neglected. But by 6:30 the van was packed (and I mean packed) and we were rolling down the street toward I-95. We followed I-95 to the north through Maryland into Delaware, and crossed the Delaware Memorial Bridge into New Jersey, our third state of the day. We decided to abandon the well-traveled highways, so we switched off the GPS and follow those grey-lined roads on our map. We found some wonderfully quiet byways and very little traffic. One of the pleasures or touring New Jersey is the gas prices and the mandatory full service pumps. The tax structure allows gas to be sold ... read more

Summertime, And the livin’ is easy Fish are jumpin’ And the cotton is high Oh, your daddy’s rich And your momma’s good lookin’ So, hush little baby Don’t you cry" George and Ira Gershwin OK, so maybe “livin” isn’t so easy, I’m not a big fisherman, and my daddy certainly wasn’t rich. But, it is summertime and it’s time for vacation. Like last year, I’m inviting you to come along with Jill and me as we explore another part of this impressive country of ours. We will be leaving Baltimore Monday morning June 27th and going to Cape May, NJ for a couple of nights then head south doing a Tour de Beach. We plan to visit most major beaches on the east coast and not stop until we get to Key West, FL. Actually, we ... read more

Day 21 Hagerstown to Mar-Lu-Ridge to Baltimore, MD Picking up the kids from camp. Home sweet home!! 7,500 miles wow! 7,500 miles of driving over the course of 21 days is a lifetime in today's world of high speed...everything! And I loved it! We took our time and got to know more about our country, our friendship, and ourselves. I would like to thank Don for his patience, persistence, and practical suggestions (that I often ignored). Maybe next year we will head south or north....way north....Don saw a trip to the North Pole...hmmm....not sure if I'm up for that much fun! Who knows? ... read more
