"What you've done becomes the judge of what you're going to do - especially in other people's minds... When you're traveling, you are what you are, right there and then... People don't have your past to hold against you... There are no yesterdays on the road.."

NEXT TRIP: the Siem Reap Rice Run 2019 and a relax in Kuala Lumpur afterwards...

Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things - air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky - all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it. - Cesare Pavese

"Trust me, it's paradise. This is where the hungry come to feed. For mine is a generation that circles the globe and searches for something we haven't tried before. So never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience. And if it hurts, you know what? It's probably worth it" - The Beach (2000)

Siem Reap is an amazing place for a holiday. I constantly get frustrated on web forums such as Tripadvisor where ‘experts’ and others constantly advise people that all you need is 2-3 days in this amazing part of the world. Crazy! Each and every time we go, we stay a little longer.. and if life was not so committed here, I would move there tomorrow. Maybe one day when we don’t have pets and the kids have grown up! There are frauds out there currently offering to provide customised itinerary’s for hundreds of dollars… in fact be prepared to pay upwards of $500-1000 for these ‘customised itineraries’… a ridiculous sum when you can scour that same person’s website and get everything for free from their articles.. My experience with a very high profile blogger who I ... read more

Well Singapore has been on the list for some time, I mean its a kids paradise when you start researching 'things to do with kids'. Only problem is that the accommodation is expensive, attractions cost an arm and a leg and to eat in a nice restaurant I would have to sell my first born! So we decided to a) only go for a short time and pack a lot in and b) save money where we could - hence the kids first foray into backpacking accommodation and meals in nearby Hawkers Centres (food is best there anyway!) Our journey to reach Singapore was epic. A 5 hour car ride to the airport, a midnight flight with Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur, a small delay at KLIA2 and a lunch time flight to Singapore.... overall we ... read more

Welcome home” is the greeting that meets you by Kol, your newest family member, as you walk out of the small Siem Reap International airport and locate your name on a sign. A dynamic, good looking Cambodian with a heart of gold is how you will always remember Kol. He is just the start of something fantastic in Siem Reap. You jump into the air-conditioned van with Kol who hands you a small platter of ice cold fruit on toothpicks and even colder waters in metal drink bottles, and so the journey begins. Along the way, Kol tells you all you need to know about Siem Reap and Jaya House RiverPark Hotel where you are headed. “What would you like to drink when we arrive at the hotel?” Kol asks. “Wine, beer, maybe a cocktail?”. I have to start by saying I LOVED DALAT, to the point I would consider it top 5 in South East Asia! Wow! We absolutely loved it here and did not want to leave! I have always wanted to get Dalat on the itinerary so finally on my 3rd trip to Vietnam I made it! It was a tough one to research as it is obviously not as popular as some destinations and I found the accommodation side especially difficult. We ended up staying at Dreams 3 and were so happy we made that decision. It is beautiful and our room was awesome. We spent a total of 4 nights in Dalat and could have easily doubled that. Dalat is full of quirky coffee shops, great street food, cheap and cheerful cafes ... read more

We set off on January 18th with the kids in tow and stayed the night in Melbourne for an early morning flight the next day. We met up with one of our friends Chris (from our home town) and also my son Trent and his girlfriend Vic who flew in that morning from Adelaide at the airport. The trip over was pretty uneventful with a small stop in the Kuala Lumpur airport. The kids were amazing on the way over on the long flight, both desperate to be the one to sit next to Trent. They were made to swap halfway! We met up with my parents in the KL airport for a quick meal before Mum and Dad flew out to Bangkok for a few days and once we headed for Phuket. It was after ... read more

Our honeymoon started with a long drive to Melbourne to catch our Air Asia flight from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur. We had a night stay planned in Kuala Lumpur as we both love KL and I wanted to show Todd ALOFT, my favourite hotel in KL. ALOFT is centrally located at the KL Sentral train station. You can get the express train from the airport direct to this station and it takes 25 minutes as opposed to an hour in a taxi. It is an expensive ride at 55RM per person (about the same as a taxi) but its quick and easy so my preferred option. Once we arrived in Melbourne we unloaded the car then headed to a local Italian restaurant which was a 2 min drive from our hotel. I had a Ceaser salad ... read more

I have been meaning to get this blog written for some time, but time flies… and life gets away. Often when scrolling through Facebook and Trip Advisor I see people wanting to volunteer in orphanages or do some form of paying it forward on their upcoming trip. I, too, am one of these people. I have done it all over the last 12 years of South East Asian travel. I have participated in Orphanage visits (bad me), raised money for a house to be built for a single Mum of 5 kids who was living on a stilted piece of tin with dirty old pieces of cloth as her walls; I’ve raised money to buy school bikes and school ‘packs’ and I have taken Cambodian children on a school excursion to Angkor Wat and the local ... read more

In July 2017 we travelled to Kuala Lumpur for 6 nights with the kids – aged 10 and 7. Kuala Lumpur is a wonderful place for a family holiday. There is so much to do and you could easily spend a couple of weeks there. Stay : ALOFT hotel – we booked ALOFT as we stay here all the time without kids. The room felt a little squeezy with 4 of us but we were barely in the room other than to sleep so it was good. The breakfast buffet is amazing and the kids loved it. The kids also loved the rooftop pool and we recommend this place for families. On day 1 we arrived from Melbourne on a day flight with Air Asia. I had prebooked a family ticket with the KL Express train ... read more

Hoi An is magical and we think that Hoi An is one of the best places to visit in Vietnam with kids. Famous for being a UNESCO world heritage site with some of the best food in the world, it is a safe, clean and pretty destination for taking your kids. Accommodation We found a gorgeous family room for 4 at Azumi Villas which was great. My only criticism, having stayed closer to the old town on previous trips, was that we were a little too far from the action for our liking. In hindsight I would definitely stay on An Hoi Islet with the kids as we like to be able to walk to dinner and home again. We found it hard to find a taxi back to the hotel after dinner unless we paid ... read more

Phnom Penh is one of those crazy cities that you either love or hate… on my first visit in 2007 I hated it. I stayed out of the tourist area, walked back to our hotel from a terrible dinner and had children pulling at us begging. The streets were dark and dingy and we felt very unsafe… However fast forward 11 years and it is one of my favourites! Here is my guide to your time in Phnom Penh Accommodation I absolutely love the MAADS chain of hotels – they have several in differing budgets… and Urban Teahouse is my number one, followed closely by the ever popular Blue Lime. Blue Lime is walking distance to the river and a firm favourite of many travellers. I highly recommend both of the above, but their other hotels ... read more
