Raheny is a small village about 15 miles north of Dublin. It has a population of about 3000 but its location to Dublin via train, which is about 3 mins from our B&B, and the village of Howth could provide some advantages such as reasonable rent and access to hiking along the coast. Yesterday, Kathy and I hiked around Raheny including the coastal area along North Bull Island. Between North Bull Island and St Annes park, we were able to get in about 15 miles. St Annes park was simply amazing for a small village. It is about half the size of Central Park in NYC yet borders the coast making it a simply wonderful place to hike. My dogs were howling. After a tour around the village to check out the amenities, we had dinner ... read more

After visiting Howth on Sunday, we returned the next day (Monday) to hike the coastal trail around the peninsula. There are several loop hikes around Howth with the longest hike being about 8 mile along the cliffs surrounding the village. This is a very beautiful hike with some treacherous cliffs as much as 100 ft above the ocean. One slip in many area would be deadly. Kathy says "Put your big boy pants on and stop your sniveling." Needless to say we had fun. After the hike we stopped at Wright's and the Bloody Stream Restaurants for beers. I won't tell you which beers but I bet you can guess. On the way back to the B&B, we stopped at the grocery for bread, cheese and wine. I was happy.... read more

Today Kathy and I headed to north of Dublin to Howth. Leaving Castleknock, we took the 38 bus (which is becoming our favorite) to Dublin City Center and walked to the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) station and headed to Raheny, between Dublin and Howth, to stay at the Four Seasons B&B. We are staying in Raheny because it is just a short train ride to Howth and the B&Bs in Howth are pricey. After check-in, we headed to Howth and...you guessed it...a couple of Guiness. After tooling around the port and some hiking up the hill about 2 miles, we dined at The House restaurant. The House was recommended by Evelyn, our host at the AirBnB in Castleknock. Life is good with steamed mussels and a cool white. Interesting enough, Captain Bligh from "Mutiny on ... read more

Today we head back to Dublin to a AirBnB in Castleknock northwest of Phoenix Park. Unfortunetly we are still fighting against the bus strike. We thought that we had a work around but at the last minute we had to rely on the goodness of the Irish folks. Our host, Madeline, graciously offered to drive us to Cory in order to catch the bus to Dublin. After a bus transfer in Dublin City Center, we are off to Castleknock. Phoenix Park is about 1700 acres (about twice the size of Central Pak in NYC) full of fun and sun in sunny funny Dublin. Kathy and I are staying with Evelyn and James in a nice house about 1/4 mile from the park. For the next 2 days we are touring the Irish presidents house as well ... read more

After breakfast at Madeline's, Kathy and I spent our down day in Tenahely hiking an 8 mile rails to trails loop. It was level and easy. Probably good for our legs. I kept asking Kathy for the map and she finally told me "Can't we just go without looking at the map?" So I stopped asking for the map. Thirty minutes later she asked where are we. I told her I didn't know. We also toured the residential portion of Tenahely and visited the local realtors shop for window shopping local rentals. Some very nice properties that are affordable in the area although this is not the preferred location. We also scope out the bus transportation back to Dublin tomorrow. The bus strike is still on and looks like it will interfer with our travels. We ... read more

This is our last day of hiking on the Wicklow Way. We ended our hike with a stirring 10.5 miles through some very beautiful country. This is lambing season and every pasture has the cutest little lamb hovering around their mothers. I scared 2 baby lambs who ran clear across the pasture to their mother. She came over to berate me but I told her Kathy did it. Kathy must have taken about 300 pictures of these lambs. How many pictures of baby lambs does one need. I guess the answer is more than 300. The weather was cool but dry thankfully. Most of the hiking was along forestry or farm access roads but still the hiking is good. Very challenging up and down the hill sides. Good training for our AT hike in MAY. We ... read more

MISSING April 4th 2017

This morning, after a hearty Irish breakfast, Maura, took Kathy and I to the trailhead at Shelltown which made for about a 11 or 12 mile hike. The typical Irish Breakfast is 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, 2 pieces of bacon (what we all ham) and black & white pudding. The pudding is similar to a sausage patty in most cases. Later we were shopping for cheese and crackers for a snack and Kathy came across a package of black & white pudding. After reading the ingredients, I no longer think I will partake in the pudding. The overall hike was uneventful but beautiful. The weather was overcast but dry. We ran into a number of other hikers from Belgium, Germany and other places. Midway through the hike we ran into difficulties. Apparently the trail maintenance ... read more

This is day 3 of our hike and we are starting out of Laragh and headed to Glenmalure to stay 2 days at the Coolalingo B&B downtown. After our 20mile exercise yesterday, we were hoping for a cool 8 mile stroll through the beautiful mountains of Ireland. We finally hit the trail at about 11:00AM after a short visit at the Wicklow Way Visitors Center where the pleasure of seeing their display would cost us 9 euros each. We decided to "move on down the road" so to speak. Ireland is such a beautiful place with their rolling hills and sheep dotting the countryside. Oh....did I mention that it was raining. We were making some good headway along some logging roads when the weather turned bad. Shortly afterwards we found ourselves transversing the side of one ... read more

This is day 2 of our hiking and my legs are up for it...until I find out that today is a 20 mile hike. I had been reading the literature wrong and we were halfway up White Hill mountain when I found out the bad news. Holy cow that's a long way. We were overlooking the Guinness estate and I was tempted to go see if I could join them for a brew. Kathy convenced me that they would not appreciate me just showing up uninvited and that all would be okay. As always she was right! Geeerrr!!! We also so saw the Powerscourt waterfall which is about 300 ft...excuse me...100 meters tall. I think that was the last thing I remember until I had a pint of Guinness before me about 9:00PM. We did eventually ... read more

After loading our gear into the cab, we headed to start of our hike at Marlay Park in south Dublin. Kathy told me last night that I could only have 33 lbs in my pack. I didn't tell her it weighed 46 lbs at the airport. They took it anyway....I'm glad I didn't have to carry the damn thing. After a cup of coffee and loading our pack into the transfer van, we were off. Did I mention that the forcast call for rain. Our first day was scheduled for 14 miles. We were on the trail at 9:36...exactly. About noonish it started raining and it rained and rained and rained. Apparently Lexington gets about 46 inches of rain as does Ireland. The difference is in Ireland, it rains all the time. We hiked in some ... read more
