Tanzania day 10 Making our own coffee at a cultural tourism project in Arusha, Tanzania, Africa Coffee!!! Today was about coffee!! The world’s finest drink and we were going to learn all about it. I had found a company through Lonely Planet and then through the internet that does coffee tours and so we dicided to stay in Arusha an extra day. I wasn’t exactly sure what a coffee and villages tour entailed but I knew I’d be getting some coffee, meeting local people and giving something back to the community. There are many cultural tourism programmes in Tanzania so Tengeru is just one of them. Each of them have to give at least 65% of their income to the local community so having tourists come is important. We were told today that Tengeru has set ... read more

Tanzania day 9 Ngorongoro completes the Big Five with a live sex show If the Ngorongoro crater was in Stoke they would have filled it in by now and then run out of money and left it as waste ground. Thankfully councils are more forward thinking in Tanzania and this jaw-dropping spectacle is there still. This collapsed volcano should surely be one of the natural wonders of the world just for the amount of animals and species it holds. Most animals here don’t leave because they don’t need to. The cat food has grass and water and the cats have, well, plenty of cat food. We rose at 5am not having had another elephant in the camp...or had our tent flattened by one... Coffee was ready and then breakfast ready for our 6am 6:11. Not ... read more

Tanzania day 8 Serengeti morning safari, invading elephants and a view of Ngorongoro from our tent. Up at 5:15, yay! Still dark and there are still sounds of zebra and hyena. When we went to the toilets just before sleep last night my head torch refelected in a pair of eyes that were at about the right height of a hyena. When we vacate the hut we eat in we have to shut the door to keep the hyenas out. We haven’t seen hyena in the Serengeti. Edyta really wants to see hyenas. First none-catfood thing we see as dawn breaks across the Serengeti, yep hyena. Two of them bounding around. Great start. We got up early as this is when the predators may still be hunting but Bori headed off to a place where there ... read more

Tanzania day 7 Safari so goody in the Serengeti, Tanzania, Africa Have you ever had one of those dreams where you’re camping in the middle of the Serengeti and there are loads of strange animal noises outside your tent. And it’s 4am and you need a wee. And the toilets are quite a walk away and you’ve been told not to go on your own. And then there’s a lion in the toilets. And then Prince Harry turns up at breakfast. ??? No? Well up until the last two parts, that was actually true last night and the last two bits were probably brought on by the stress and pain of needing a wee in this situation. When I finally got to go it was amazing. And then you look round and there’s a herd of ... read more

Tanzania day 6 Sunrise to sunset, threatened by Maasai and big cats in the Serengeti, Tanzania, Africa To the Serengeti today....eventually! Come on guys, get a move on! The sunrise was meh again-see yesterday’s blog-and breakfast was due at 7:30. We met two new companions Mark and Uri (I think) who are from Hungary and tried and tried to upload previous blogs but to not much avail. Homestly, it’s like being on Vodafone it’s that bad! We were told we would be leaving at 9am which is really late for a start but we didn’t get on our way until 9:30. The best time for game viewing means getting there before sunrise as the big cats are still active. Setting off an a really long journey at 9:30 is frustrating as you just want to be ... read more

Tanzania day 5 A lion cub, thieving monkeys, many elephants and a MOR peckerhead in Tanzania Sunrise isn’t always interesting and today was one of those days. The sun limped from behind the horizon, made no use of the low lying sky and plopped unceremoniously into the sky. Only the look on Claire’s face when someone played ‘Here Comes The Sun’ was worth getting up so early for. Oh and the horror when she noticed a young woman wearing socks and sandals....and then when she saw the pasty white guy who ith an Arab headscarf.... Yes, my wife is always worth watching and infinitely more interesting than a sunrise. We were looking over Lake Manyara national park though, so the view was pretty good. Our campsite is called Panorama and it certainly lives up to its ... read more

Tanzania day 4 Tree climbing lioness in Lake Manyara national park, Tanzania The day began with a hot shower. That might not mean a lot to you but it’s our first since we got here; let’s hope it’s not the last! Our stay at Arusha Holiday ends in less than an hour when we will (hopefully) be picked up to go on safari for 6 days. There is no sign of breakfast yet or anyone to pay and we haven’t paid for the collection from the airport last night either. Oh and the wifi has gone off as well. The cockerel is giving it a bit of a rest though thankfully. Later... So we were ready for 8 which is when we were supposed to be being picked up. Tea, coffee and breakfast did arrive but ... read more

Tanzania Day 3 A flight delay, a car accident, glaring locals and going up north in Tanzania After the theft from another room last night I don’t think we were being over cautious when we took all our valuables to breakfast this morning. I’d barricaded the doors last night as well, just in case. Claire had planned to get up for the sunset but ended up getting woken by a thunderstorm instead. I heard a bit of it but was pretty dead to the world while she managed to get up and shoot some video of some interesting sheet lightening. We didn’t get up until EIGHT am! Crazy, lazy days. Breakfast was odd and I’m not even sure what two of the things on our plates were. There was coffee though that was drinkable so that’s ... read more

Tanzania day 2 Chimpanzee trekking in the jungle in Gombe, Tanzania, Africa. Sometimes I may have a little moan and often it’s about people but today, despite confusion later....was one of the best days of my life. Usually when we set off to do things we set off with low expectations so when we set off seaching for chimpanzees I expected to maybe see one...probably covered in scaffolding....about a mile away....with trees in the way and it be raining so hard we can’t get our cameras out. Amazingly though, this was not the case. After a breakfast of savoury pancakes, fruit, bread and jam and omelette it was time to head out with our guide. We had paid extra (2x£9) for two trekkers to head out before us, at 4am supposedly, to find out where the ... read more

Tanzania day 1 Feom Brum to Dar es Salaam to Kigoma to Gombe Tanzania I’m in shock. We have arrived at our destination without mishap. No flight delays, no lost luggage, no Qatar Airways, no being asked to get off the plane while they restart it, no airline going bump, no being asked to get off the plane to identify your hold baggage.... Yes all these have happened to us...and more! But this time with KLM it was quite the opposite-left on time, arrived on time, no problem with connections, good food and service and regular drinks, friendly staff, ice cream and even a stroopwaffel which made my day. Kudos Dutch people. When we stopped at Kilimanjaro airport on the way they even told us where we were so we didn’t get off at the wrong ... read more
