Day 5 Georgia. Wednesday 14th Sept. Getting out and about in Georgia for the first time. When we go on holiday we usually travel around and don’t stay in one place, but this time is different . Our base remains in Tiblisi while I have booked a few day trips so we can get out and see more things. Today was the first of those trips and I booked it through getyourguide.com. Doing so many things would be really difficult using public transport, particularly fitting all the below in in one day. Plus you wouldn’t learn as much. We set alarms for the first time on this trip and headed to our meeting point which was a metro station only one steep hill away. Oh and an underpass as Claire was worrying I wouldn’t be climbing ... read more

Day 4 Georgia. Tuesday 13th Sept. What goes up in Tiblisi…. This isn’t a place for disabled people or for anyone who struggles going up steep hills or steps. The pavements are, I think, based on the Caucasian mountains and the hills on Mount Everest. If you’re in a wheelchair, forget it as you’ll barely make it out of your hotel before they stick some obstacle in your way. I wonder what they do with all the disabled people here? Maybe there’s an area somewhere outside the city that’s totally flat….?? Either way, disabled tourists…..forget it. If you’re here to lose some weight though, you came to the right place. If you’re looking for a challenge, Tiblisi is your town. There will usually be something interesting at the end but you will have to put in ... read more

Day 3 Georgia. Monday 12th Sept. How many things can you do in one day in Tiblisi? So the first plan today was to go to the Magti shop to get a SIM card. This would be great for finding our way round, finding places of interest and vegan cafes and stuff. I took a picture of the Google maps directions and was all ready to set off when…. ……Claire happened….. ‘So I thought we’d start off at the fortress then go this church then….oh yeah, the SIM cards….we can do that after…’ You may remember that the fortress is high up but Claire assured me that she’d found a short route and I’m convinced she said it wasn’t too steep. We stood at the bottom and she was lost but decided that we should walk ... read more

Day 2 Georgia Breaking ourselves in gently So where were we? Ah yes, our luggage had actually arrived at the same time as us….weird… So we enter into Georgia and our taxi guy is waiting for us wearing a red scarf as promised. Well it’s more like a neckerchief but let’s not split hairs here. The guy has made an effort to be noticed so leave him alone. It is about 4:30am by the way but our man, whose name I instantly forgot, is happy to see us and then wants to know where we want to go despite me having let his firm know twice. I show him the Google maps link using the free airport wifi and he seems to know where to go. He doesn’t. But he gets there eventually thanks to, or despite, ... read more

Sat 10th Sept. Getting there despite some peckerheads After a frantic four days in London, with three shows in two days, we had one night at home to get ready for this trip. We never do things simply! Normally we drive to the airport but airport parking (off-site of course) has rocketed in price so it was only a few quid extra to be picked up. Mind you, given the price of petrol at the moment, it’s probably about the same once you factor everything in. Our ‘always on time’ transfer turned up five minutes late but Mohammed was soon whisking us to Manchester airport. He was quite chatty but I was out of his view so Claire did the talking for both of us. There was a road closure and Mohammed knew a good way ... read more

21st Jan 2022 Mallaig to Eigg to Gretna Today was supposed to be a travelling day as Googley Maps said it was 4 hours and 47 minutes to Gretna. We’re only staying in Gretna to break up the journey home and, with the problems with getting to any of the Small Islands, we decided to fill the day by taking the opportunity to get to Eigg. Muck will just have to wait! We had to be at the ferry port by 09:50 and get everything packed up and in the car beforehand too, so we had an early start. It was a bit misty as we left our super home for the last three nights, so we stopped on the way to Mallaig to take some moody loch shots. They’re quite a niche field of photography ... read more

20th Jan 2022 Mallaig day 2 It’s strange getting used to not having any internet when you are used to constantly checking whether people have contacted you, how Bozo is messing up again, what evil things Priti racist Patel has done again etc. But little things like not having the temperature on your watch are weird to live without too. But that’s what you get when you have accommodation away from it all and it does allow to get plenty of reading done. As with other English-speaking countries we’ve visited we spend a lot of time before and during our trip learning the local accent and lingo. Scotland has been no exception and there have been lots of och-ayes, seeing someone called Jimmy and excessive and elongated use of the word wee (as in small as ... read more

19th Jan 2022 Mallaig We knew before we set off on this trip that getting to any of the Small Islands may be impossible. This was due to the weather, the time of year and the scarcity of anything resembling a helpful timetable on the Calmac ferries website. The casual nature of Calmac continued when we called in their offices this morning. Today’s sailings were all cancelled due to the weather. Not sure how much worse it was out there but it has been mostly sunny here with the odd wee shower and more wind from me than anywhere else. Tomorrow they may go to Eigg but there’s a strong possibility we may get stranded there. Other destinations are cancelled as they are running a charter with the ferry instead. If they can be arsed we ... read more

18th Jan 2022 From Kingussie to Mallaig I let Claire lie in until 7:30. She's a lucky girl. Today was a travelling day so of course we wanted to squeeze in as much as possible before we ensconced ourselves in our new accommodation. I let Claire have some breakfast and then we packed the car and drove about 200m to a car park. Well it would have been 200m if I hadn’t missed the huge sign, but that’s by the by. The car park had some clean loos and a map of all the walks in the area. I’d already decided on one last night that took us to a peak with a chance of seeing red squirrels so we headed out on that one. The route turned out to have many things that people go ... read more

After a veritable lie-in until 8am we breakfasted in our room before heading out into the clean Highlands air. Part of the reason for this trip was to try and photograph polar bears in the snow at the Highland Wildlife Park. When the sun is out all day and the temperature is a heady 6 degrees…..well that just ain’t gonna happen. A note from yesterday. When we last came up here, about 8 years ago, the A9 had a trial maximum speed limit in some parts for HGV of 50mph. That trial is still going on! And it’s dumb! That speed limit applies to single carriageways so everyone behind has to go at 50 as well… The roads are straight and smooth yet this eternal trial is slowing everyone down to 50. Okay dumbnuts, here’s the ... read more
