Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Ninety Mile Beach April 14th 2011

April 14, 2011: Sort of a lazy beginning to this day…….I slept like a dead log….so when I had finished the morning rituals, it was only about 7:20AM. We had decided last night that we did not have to get on the road very early……..we only had 65 miles to go, even though those are on well paved two lane roads, but they do go through the heart of each and every tiny or large village or town…..and that DOES slow down any possibility of driving those 65 miles within an hour(like in the states). HOWEVER…….we do enjoy driving through those tiny towns, looking around when we can, and wish often that we could just pull over, park, and wander around to get a better grasp of what each of those unique and charming little places ... read more

April 13, 2010: Another day of clouds to begin with…..and, just I mentioned a couple of days ago…..it seems to be almost always that it is cloudy along the seashore for the first few hours after dawn…..and, just as today…..the clouds move out and sun takes over. And…..YEP…it did just that! We moved around rather quickly and quietly this morning…..as we had a goal to reach…..get to the pier and be the first ones to get onto our boat for the four cruise into the Bay of Islands National Park!! Yesterday we had watched the two large catamarans leave….and knew that unless we were the first to get there, we most likely would not be able to get a very good seat on the very top deck. Soooooo, we quickly swallowed breakfast without realizing it, only ... read more

April 12, 2011........difficulty on posting pictures for the Apr 11th....Library wifi is dreadfully slow. Hmmmmm……..not much sleep last night for either of us. The Pickled Parrot decided to get a bit more pickled….and since our room was right outside the dining/social/gathering room, we did not get much sleep. This is the first time this has happened…..and so, when the time came to get my horizontal sagging hulk into a vertical position…….I was NOT ready. However……time marches on quickly at this advancing age, so I did pull myself together and manage to squeeze the sags into some kind of more natural bodily shape as I went through the morning rituals. Been a few years since I have showered in a stall and in the next shower stall was a young college aged female, whom was most likely ... read more

April 11, 2011 I do believe that the mornings when awaking close to the seashore ALWAYS are cloudy……aren’t they? At least that seems to be the way I have found them in the past few weeks……but, they usually seem to clear up by mid- to late- mornings……unless it really is a weather front that has arrived to hang over this sagging hulk of Me! Soooo, I had high hopes for this morning after I took care of the morning rituals and went to the kitchen/dining building…..entitled by signage “The Bach”…..the back…as it was located behind/between the two main housing buildings. Freeze-dried coffee….espresso blend…..as usual and as soon as the 1st Lady arrived I had my normal breakfast banquet of 2-3 slices of a very delicious bread, filled with grains and nuts…..and a bit of real butter ... read more

Unreal toilets!!!

April 10, 2011 Hmmmm……this little village of Kauotunu, pop. 412(give or take a very few), certainly enjoyed themselves last night!!!! There was a HUGE party up on the side of the steep hillside above the 3-store city center (not a center but just a side of a small street)……and that party kept everyone awake most of the night! I could see the lights of the home up there and as quiet as it was everywhere else, you could certainly hear the individuals who were attending were having a “great” time. However……those of us not invited didn’t have that “great” of a time, as it was after 4am when it finally was no more!!!! But…..the joys of being young and being able to keep that “fun” going until the wee hours of the morning. I DO remember ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo Caves April 9th 2011

These are the pictures that the owners of Spellbound Tours in Waitomo Caves sent to me via email......showing the glow worms and the "strings" which hang down to catch food for themselves and the larvae. Impossible to take these pictures with my camera.....quite a surreal sight as you go through the cave in darkness with these glow worms glowing on the "ceiling" of the caves. Very, very few places in the world which have these glow worms, especially in such huge numbers. ... read more

April 10, 2011 WOW…….just another stunning day…..the sky was cloudless….the temps were warm……and after the morning rituals and breakfast we were soon packed, loaded, and on our way further north. The hostel we were in last night was almost completely new……vaulted ceilings of knotty pine, extremely clean, and some wonderful other people in the hostel that we enjoyed visiting with. In in the social room, I met three young guys who were traveling together from Germany……..and we had about an hour of laughs and discussions about their plans for their futures, as well as comparisons of our countries and the problems both countries have. Great fun…….and I am sure these young men will have a successful future with the plans and goals they have set for themselves. This morning we were underway by a bit after ... read more
