We overslept this morning. The people in the room above were scraping chairs and having showers at 1am. Honestly, this hotel appears to have zero sound proofing! Today we are walking back down to the city to take advantage of all the free sightseeing that the lady in one of the monuments told me about yesterday! What skin flints we are…but why pay if you don’t have to? We have started our day at El Banuelo, a Roman style bath house. We enter a house with a courtyard, then through to the three bathrooms behind. First the cold room, followed by the warm. All have moorish skylights representing the moon and stars. A third room, which we can only see from behind a barred gate, has a pretty blue and white tiled floor. The baths are ... read more

We’re up early again, though not quite as early as yesterday. Today is forecast to be 29 degrees so we want to attempt to beat the heat. We take our usual stroll down the steep hill that leads us in to town. It’s pleasantly cool and even more pleasantly tourist-free. I do love being the ‘only tourist in town’. To be honest there are a few other independent travellers milling around but not enough to ruin my photos. :-) We start off in the cathedral area…which was heaving yesterday, but also impossible to photograph in the bright sun. First there is a pretty fountain with a huge statue above. They haven’t turned the water on yet but I do get some decent shots of the statue. And then some interesting buildings opposite which I didn’t even ... read more

This morning we are up with the lark. We have tickets to see the Alhambra but it’s possible there will be long queues to enter. Our time slot for the Nazarene Palace is 9.30am and we have been warned not to be late! I am an avid reader of Philippa Gregory’s historical novels and the Alhambra has been on my wish list ever since I read ‘The Constant Princess’, which follows the life of Katherine of Aragon. Katherine, who grew up in the Alhambra, is sent to England to marry Arthur…and subsequently Henry VIII after Arthur’s death. After the sunshine of Spain, Katherine hates both the English climate and the heavy stewed food. She longs to eat salad again. There are vivid descriptions of her former life here. It’s still cool, having only just got light, ... read more

We don’t need an alarm clock to wake us up today. The neighbour’s dog starts yapping at 6am and pretty much doesn’t stop. Hmmm, I thought we came on holiday to get away from people’s noisy pets? We would like to make a reasonably early start because our next hotel has limited parking options and we’d like to nab a parking spot nearby if possible. We go down for breakfast and our host greets us. What would we like for breakfast? Well what does he have? All sorts…perhaps an omelette or avocado? Mmmm, yes please. Ian will have a plain omelette and I will have avocado. Tea or coffee? I order two teas. We sit in the guest area and wait. Half an hour has passed and we are still waiting. Our host appears to be ... read more

A leisurely start to the day. We walk up to the local cafe to get breakfast - they are offering bacon and eggs, lovely. The bacon has a very strong flavour. We think it might be the speciality bacon cured up here because of the mountain climate. Now to the electronic dashboard. I manage to find my way into settings and hey presto, I can change the language to English - Ian is much happier and as impressed as I could ever expect him to be. We set off for our tour of Sierra Nevada. It’s a mountainous region with white painted buildings dotted throughout. There are fabulous views and terrifying hairpin bend roads. A massive thud on the car indicates a large pine cone falling from above. I’ve also noticed something that looks like rain ... read more

This morning we are have a leisurely breakfast, pack our bags and make our way over to the railway station…less than five minutes walk from our hotel. We are headed back to the airport. No we are not going home, but that’s where we collect our rental car. Neither of us have been looking forward to the drive out of busy Malaga on the wrong side of the road! One of the courtesy buses has just drawn in so no waiting required. We are straight to the hire company where we take a numbered ticket and sit in their comfy red sofas until our number is called. We are early anyway as our hire doesn’t start till midday. Our number has been called and we are up at the counter. The guy is trying to upsell ... read more

This morning we had planned to go out early because I want to be back in time to see the Queens funeral. The black out curtains put paid to this as we don’t wake up till 8am (that would be 7am back in the UK). I can’t believe it’s so late, Ian says I fell asleep around 6pm last night - I must have been exhausted. We decide to skip breakfast and go straight to the cathedral. The tourist office assured us it would open at 9am today although our guide book said 10. Out of date guidebook? It’s a half hour walk to the historic centre so we won’t be there at opening time…but near enough. We arrive at the cathedral. It doesn’t open till 10! We walk around the outside taking photos. It’s much ... read more

We wake late. Well no, actually we woke early and turned back over! We only have two days in Malaga so we had better get a move on! The hotel has a very nice buffet breakfast and we are hungry so we are another hour on before we are ready. We emerge on to the deserted Sunday street outside our hotel. The heat hits us like a blast. We thought it would be cooler here by now? We are walking to the Centro Histórico, it’s about half an hour on foot. We start off by the harbour and then head inland. We stumble across a modern art gallery. It looks interesting so we go inside. It’s quite a good collection and all blissfully air con so it’s a pleasant interlude. Now to Malaga centre. It’s a ... read more

So here we are, off to the airport again. To be honest it doesn’t feel long since our last trip and I’m almost wishing I hadn’t booked this trip. But book it I did and everything has been paid for so here we are. I suppose we were lucky that the trains were running as there was due to be a strike today. Our train is on time and it chugs us in to Redhill, one change and we are at Gatwick. It’s all pretty smooth. We are early but check in is open. For once we don’t break the machines doing the self check in of our suitcase…yes just the one, we’re travelling light. Security is the usual nightmare. The lady in charge of the queue is funny…she’s calling out all the things we have ... read more

A 5am wake up has not been unusual here, but of course, today I was fast asleep when multiple alarms went off…just in case! This is the price we pay for having breakfast before we leave. It’s an excellent help yourself buffet here so we have decided it’s worth the get up. Our taxi arrives promptly at 6.15am and whisks us to Kefvalik airport in ten minutes. Here we join the ‘speedy boarding’ queue, which may not be quite as speedy since the desk is unmanned. Maybe it doesn’t need to open as early because they are going to be speedy? Anyway the other queue is horrendous so it can’t be any worse. Our check in has open ended and it’s all quite quick. Though anyone with a soft sided bag has to walk back round ... read more
