January 28 Arrived safe and sound in Ho Chi Minh City for a one night stay and enjoyed a typical Vietnamese evening meal in a small local restaurant with the Owner / Manager of V Explorer tours, Nguyen Tan Nghia, ( our hosts for this part of our trip ). It was a very interesting dinner as we were able to try many new things that we probably wouldn't try if we went by ourselves. Delicious food with a couple of cold Tiger Beers to wash it down. The next morning we took a short flight ( 1 hour ) to Da Nang City in Central Vietnam and were met by our new guide, a very nice local lady, Ms. Tuyet, who took us on a city tour of Da Nang City and the famous China ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor January 28th 2008

January 25 We arrived in Siem Reap in the afternoon and are looking forward to visits to the various ancient temples and sites of Angkor. After check in at the very beautiful and centrally located Sohka Angkor Hotel we spent the afternoon exploring the local market and walking through the downtown part of Siem Reap. This city is very busy with local river and lake fishermen, farmers, and now the very busy tourist business that is a major part of the economy. We enjoyed an evening dinner show with local dancers and musicians. This was a great opportunity to try some of the local flavors with the large buffet style meal. The next few days were spent, with a very good local guide, visiting the local temple sites and other ancient historical places of Angkor. WOW ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh January 24th 2008

January 24 Our tour guide picked us up early this morning for our trip back to Phnom Penh from Sihanoukville with a few stops of interest along the way. It was very interesting to talk with our guide as he was very knowledgeable about History, Politics, Culture and Local customs, etc. As this was a private tour we had him to ourselves and he was very open about talking about the problems as well as the many positive things happening in Cambodia. It is very obvious that the country is not very well off financially but things are improving as industry is now coming in and the politicians open up the country. It appears that corruption is still a major problem in some areas and the dollars speaks very loud when you want something done. Most ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville January 23rd 2008

January 22, 23 This morning we had an early morning drive for 3 1/2 hours to Kampong Som ( Sihanoukville ), Cambodia. This is a beach resort area on the Gulf of Thailand. We were very pleasantly surprised by the resort(s) and beaches that are in this part of the world. Not a secret to Europeans or Asian tourists but we had never heard of this place before. The Sohka Beach Resort and the beaches at Sihanukville are second to none in the world. The main beach area is very well developed and a lot of new construction is underway with new resorts and all levels of accommodation being built as well as a better airport facility. We enjoyed the rest of the day lounging at he pool and beach and the next day more of ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh January 21st 2008

January 21 We were up very early this morning to take our trip, on a covered power launch, up the Mekong River from Chau Doc, Vietnam to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We enjoyed a very nice breakfast on the hotel patio overlooking the hustle and bustle of the early morning on the Mekong river and the wonderful smell of the local cooking fuel, coconut shells and rice husks, coming from the riverside homes and houseboats. This is a bit of a sensory overload with the smells of the cooking smoke, the local food, the "put put" and "chug chug" sounds of the small and not so small fishing boats working up and down the river and the early morning sunrise. The high speed power launch boat ride took us about four very interesting hours up the Mekong ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta January 20th 2008

January 19th and 20th. We went from Saigon by SUV and boat to visit the Mekong Delta region of Southern Vietnam and visited Can Tho and Chau Doc as well as many small villages and towns on the very busy waterway. Part of this trip was driving through the small villages and countryside by SUV and part was by small river boat. This is a very important region for Vietnam as it is a big food producing area. We visited several floating markets including the largest in the region in Cai Rang, a short boat ride from our hotel in Can Tho. Very interesting experience as we went through the floating market and went ashore to visit the Land Market as well. Not quite the way we shop in North America but seems to work well ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City January 18th 2008

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City ( Saigon ) on January 17 in the Evening. Stayed at a wonderful hotel called Majestic Hotel in a very good central location on the riverfront in Saigon. This is a hotel built in the mid 1920's and has been completely redone to modern standards but retains the kind of understated elegance of the old colonial style. January 18. We spent a busy day walking to places of interest in Saigon. The large shopping market, War and History Museum and Cathedral. This is a very nice city. Quite frankly not what we expected. Saigon is the industrial capital and is a very big and quite modern city, relatively clean and we felt safe in all of the parts we visited. ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo January 17th 2008

Japan. We arrived on a very nice ( but long) flight from LAX to Narita Airport near Tokyo and took the very good commuter train from the airport terminal to the Shiniagawa rail station. We were met my my brother and his wife who are stationed in Japan for his work for 1 year. In our short stay ( 3 nights ) in Tokyo we enjoyed visit to some of the more famous shopping districts, a typical Shrine, the worlds largest fish market and some very good restaurants. If you are ever near Shinigawa area of Tokyo you must try the " Two Torches Restaurant." This is a not so fancy but wonderful eating experience at reasonable prices ( reasonable for Tokyo. ) It's not inexpensive to do anything here ) We enjoyed our breif visit ... read more
