Travels with Tom and Alice

Tom and Alice Gardner

We love to travel.

For the past 20 years or so we have been fortunate to have had the desire and resources to travel to over 40 countries around the world.

We recently retired and have spent the last 18 months traveling around most of the USA and Canada, almost full time, and living in our 40" Monaco Motor Coach.

We have started a 9 1/2 month world trip on Jan. 13, 2008 and are looking forward to new adventures, visiting new places, trying new food and meeting new people.

Ready, Set, Go !!!

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Surrey June 30th 2009

June 2009 We have finally arrived at our new summer home in South Surrey, B.C. We officially took possession on the 1st of May but didn’t arrive here until the end of May after our adventures visiting family in the Canadian prairies and a few weeks in Calgary getting a few loose ends finished up and some final packing. We found a good place, close to home, for our Motor Home for the summer and a lot of things were cleaned out and everything moved into our home. It will be a lot lighter, than it was, when we make our fall trip to Arizona this year. It’s hard to believe we had all that “STUFF” in that much space. We have been shopping for furniture and other household goods as we got rid of almost ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Phoenix April 1st 2009

Arizona Winter It is now the first of April and we are leaving our winter home in El Mirage, AZ. in our Motorhome. We had a wonderful winter with nice weather, lots of golf, a bunch of great days visiting with friends, some relaxing lawn bowling, a few visits to the local points of interest, a few NHL hockey games and a few baseball games at the the annual Major League Spring Training in the Phoenix area. Next year we will get a social coordinator to manage these busy times. We are now off to Canada ( the long way ) via Las Vegas and California and then working our way back to visit family in Saskatchewan and Alberta before going to B.C. to move into our new home. Alice actually has a real home to ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Phoenix December 23rd 2008

December 23, 2008 El Mirage, Arizona Our wonderful adventure is finished and we are done traveling for awhile. We are settled in for the winter in our motorhome near Phoenix, Arizona. From what we see on the news lately we are glad we are not in Canada with the cold and snow. Golf was great on a sunny day today !! ( I played very bad but it was a great day ) Best wishes of the season to all of the many friends we made on our travels and we hope everyone is happy and healthy as we go into a new year ( and maybe some new adventures ). Top of the season to all and for all a prosperous, happy and healthy New Year. Tom and Alice I have posted a few new ... read more

North America November 1st 2008

November 1, 2008 THE END Here we are sitting in Phoenix looking at each other wondering what we should be doing next !! Life will be different for a while as we adjust to “not being on the road”. We returned to North America on Oct 31 after an overnight in Bogota and then to Miami, Dallas and Phoenix. We will take the Motorhome out of storage and then go to Canada to find a “Real Home” probably in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. This has really been quite the adventure. 9 ½ months on the road. About 65 Flight segments ( and not one lost bag !!! ). 4 Continents 38 Different countries. Too many hotel rooms and too many restaurant meals. But, all in all a very worthwhile and very enjoyable “once in ... read more

South America » Venezuela » Capital » Caracas October 30th 2008

On our arrival in Caracas we took a short few hours tour of the city and some of the highlights and history. This is a nice city but there are a lot of problems with businesses, hotels and manufacturing plants closing because of the policies of the current government. People just don’t want to invest under these conditions. It is obvious that the locals are questioning the ideas and policies of Hugo Chavez and his friends. Too bad as Venezuela has a lot of potential and a very beautiful country. Maybe things will improve. Thursday morning we flew to Bogota, Colombia for a short stop and our Friday morning connections to Miami and Phoenix and the end of this adventure. It’s hard to believe we are near the end of this wonderful trip.... read more

South America » Venezuela » Guayana » Canaima National Park October 29th 2008

October 27 - 30, 2008 Camaina and Angel Falls, Venezuela WOW !!! We left Margarita Island on an early flight and flew to Puerto Ordaz and on to Canaima National Park. Alice “just loved” the small planes ! The views are spectacular in these aircraft as you fly fairly low. After a few hours and some beautiful scenery we arrived at the Canaima National Park that is home to Angel Falls ( highest in the world at about 1000 meters ). Shortly after arrival we took a fly over flight of Angel Falls and the surrounding mountains and gorges, in a Cessena 6 seater. This was not scheduled for today but the weather was decent and we took the opportunity. This was a great ride with some spectacular, and very close up, views of these amazing ... read more

South America » Venezuela » Insular » Isla Margarita October 26th 2008

October 22 - 26, 2008 Margarita Island, Venezuela After a long day of travelling ( Bogota, Caracas, Margarita Island ) we arrived at Margarita Island and checked into Hesperia Resort for a few day of relaxing. This is a really nice part of the world with beautiful beaches and some great facilities. This is not really what we expected as the countryside is small mountains ( we were thinking flat ! ) and it is a very, very nice place. We did exactly as planned and pretty much stayed around the resort except for a few hours in Porlamar, the main city on the Island. The Hesperia is a very nice resort ( claim to be 5 star - maybe not, but a very good 4 star for sure ). Good beach, good pool area and ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena October 22nd 2008

October 17 - 21, 2008 Cartagena de Indias, Colombia Friday we flew 1 hour from Bogota to Cartagena. The flight was very interesting as we flew over a huge flood plain that is part of a large river system that drains into the Caribbean. Cartagena is a fairly big city (over 1 million) on the north coast of Colombia on the Caribbean, east of Panama. After a short break at the hotel we were picked up by our local guide for a visit around this interesting old city. The city was a busy place in the early 1500’s and an important place for the slave trade in the Caribbean. We are very impressed with Cartagena as there is lots to see and do, some great beaches, good restaurants and great accommodation. We had some spectacular views ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota October 17th 2008

October 14, 15, 16, 2008 Bogota, Colombia We arrived in Bogota in the afternoon, following the 5 ½ hour flight from Santiago, Chile, and spent a quiet afternoon looking around the city near the hotel. This is a very nice and clean city nestled into the mountains at 2600 meters altitude. Wednesday morning we were picked up by our driver guide for a trip into the country and a visit to Villa Leyva about a 3 hour drive from Bogota. The drive was a great trip with some very good conversation with our guide and a few stops along the way to visit a farmers market, the craft center at Raquira and a look at some smaller towns. This area is a huge producer of “cut flowers” and there are literally thousands of green houses in ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Torres del Paine October 15th 2008

Oct 9 - 14, 2008 Torres del Paine National Park, Chile Thursday morning we took an all day excursion from our hotel around the mountain range and onto a boat across Grey Lake for a close up ( very close up ) view of the mountain range from every possible angle and the face of the Grey Glacier. The Torres del Paine are spectacular but for us the Cuernos del Paine are even more impressive. There are more photo ops in this day than you could ever imagine !!! ( isn’t digital wonderful ?? I hope I have a big enough hard drive in my laptop to backup all the pictures !!) This is a great day trip and we enjoyed the company in our small group ( 5 + driver and guide ).
