There was intermittent rain throughout the day and we got caught in a couple of light showers when we went for a walk in Plakias town. We had a light lunch of vegetable soup which one member of our team did not rate very highly on account of lack of taste; although I thought it was ok. The view from the restaurant was also ... read more

Tuesday 25th September: As the weather forecast for the rest of the week was not looking good, high winds and rain, we decided to make the most of the good weather and go for a walk to the church of Timios Stavros at the top of the mountain overlooking Damnoni Beach. Since our last visit in May the track leading to the start point of the walk, halfway ... read more

Sunday 23 September Things went very smoothly on the way to Bristol Airport, no delays or diversions, but when we called the Park&Go meet and greet service there was no answer. Several more calls and still no response, also no sign of a representative at the Express Drop-off where we were supposed to hand over the car. Fortunately the very helpful lady on duty at the Airport Information Desk saved the day. She took the details of our meet and greet ... read more

You can return to the text anytime. Friday 11th May: a rather overcast day so we didn’t want to head directly to the beaches and instead went to one of our favourite places near Kissamos; the ancient site of Polyrinnia. It’s only 7 kms out of town and, even better, if one follows the road sign in the centre of Kissamos Polyrinnia is at the end of the road: no satnav required. Sadly, the cafe at the archaeological site wasn’t open so after we had climbed up to the acropolis and back we had to go elsewhere for lunch. We drove ... read more

No more rain and the skies were clear so we decided to head back up the mountain to the Timios Stavros church: easier now we were familiar with the route. It turned out to be much easier than our first climb; presumably because the uncertainty had gone and we could pace ourselves. An enjoyable walk/climb in warm sunshine and with great views. Afterwards, ... read more

Sfakia is 40 kms / 25 miles from Plakias but as it’s a winding mountain road it took us 1 hour 20 minutes to get to there. When we arrived we walked down to the harbour to check the ... read more

Blog 2 Friday 4th May: Our objective for the morning was to climb a prominent mountain that overlooked Damnoni beach, and which had a small white church at the very top. I had scoped this out last year; but when I had tried to get to the start point along one of the many tracks around the base of the mountain I had chosen the wrong track and ... read more

You can return to the text anytime. Blog 1 Wednesday 2 May 2018 Up early (2 am) to get to BristolAirport in time for our 6.30 am flight to Chania. There were two slight delays en route, the Brynglas Tunnels in Newport were closed eastbound (frequent practice at night), and a second when I missed a turning for a short cut to the Bristol Airport road. We arrived at the airport at 4.25am and were met by the rep of the meet & greet service who took away our car. The weather was awful with strong winds and driving rain and we got ... read more

The wind had picked up overnight and the sea across the road from our hotel looked quite rough with the wind coming from the north west. I checked the map to make sure that Damnoni Beach faced due south and should therefore be protected by the headland to the west of the beach. We changed from previous our route to Damnoni ... read more

This involved very little driving as Rethymno is only 22 miles from Plakias and I knew the route pretty well. Accordingly, we had an easy day in Plakias and although we had to check out at midday we were allowed to stay in the very pleasant central courtyard of the hotel, and make use of the swimming pools, until ... read more
