Almaty
With manicured hedges and lawns and the housing styles, struck me as having a Western feel. Am I perceiving correctly at all considering it is Central Asian?
16th May 2018

I agree
It did have more of a European feel, maybe more eastern Europe than west. It didn't scream Central Asia

Yurt Living
Looks amazing. Also looks mighty cold with the wind that could blow over the lake to further chill your bones. Reading about mattresses on the ground and your stove not lit in your yurt...yeeka. At least the mattresses look thick. Our yurt on Lenin Peak had the only beds in the place and the stove topped up with coal during the night so I guess its pure luck of the draw. Song-Kul Lake has given you that ***** experience...and you survived. Cheers to that.

Holy Crap the rug street
Up and down, round and round we went in search of new rugs for Mr. Hooper. Fortunately he found some that made him happy in Armenia. I do wish we could have found this street.

Boarder crossing
We thought Dancing Dave was going to get all of thrown in jail. He was in there showing off his watch and conversing. We were a bit worried he was trying to make a bride. All ended well. It was fabulous meeting you. An amazing trip. An amazing road. Amazing people.

The Russians were bonkers
You made us laugh! We still hope you will come to the U.S. to visit. Love to assist in developing your agenda.

They were crazy!
But they inspired us to hitchhike from Auckland home to Wellington a few months after we got home! We'd often toyed with the idea but after meeting them we bit the bullet and did it! We were so close to coming to the US this month but hit a slight stumbling block because we can't get the ESTA due to having been to Iran, given we have 2 passports we thought we'd just be able to use the one without the visa but alas when you go to complete the form in the declaration it asks if you've been to Iran (it also asks if you hold any other passports). So now to enter the US (even to transit) we have to get a visa and in NZ it's currently a 160 day processing time and we have to go up to Auckland to be interviewed as part of the process. So it won't be this year, but after we get back our next holiday (which we had an idea for last week but much research yet to work out if it could be possible) we are thinking we'll get our applications in for a US visa, so watch this space!

Rug Street in Osh
You found it... we didn't but not for lack of trying. Our homestay in Sary Mogul was full of floor and wall rugs. We made a special trip in Osh to find some as we have a house full of rugs and ones purchased on our travels are extra special for the memories We only ended up with fridge magnets which suited the Binkleys just fine! Where were you when we needed you???

It was an accident
we found the rug street when we were lost! We weren't looking for it! But I do recall it was by the pistachio nut street...

A convoy of bloggers

A convoy of bloggers
I recall our drivers took turns to race each other to the border. What fun to have met up with other Travelbloggers such as you and share tales of our adventures and the dust of the road. Glad you escaped the tummy troubles that plagued Denise in Tajikistan and me to a lesser extent. One of the group of cyclists we met in Karakul had to be taken to hospital so bit of a lottery and you can never be too careful in what you eat and drink in remote places.

Stunning border
I agree the scenery on the Tajik side of the border is stunning. I spent some time down the hill from the border post gobsmacked at the myriad of striated colours that seemed to ooze from the mountains on the Tajik side. Pretty spectacular on the Kyrgyz side too. Real pleasure to have been there.

OMG
Strange to see this room empty at Lake Karakul homestay as it was usually filled with our chatter, eating, drinking tea and amazing tales of the road flying around.
