We booked into a hostel in Hokitika called the singing bird the other night & were the only lodgers which was pretty eerie, not even the owners were staying there but it did give me a good idea for a movie. Went to see the glow worms that night, as I was already a bit freaked from the the hostel situation, standing in the dark waiting for worms to light up made me a bit more on edge. Still alive the following morning we headed off to Hokitika Gorge. We had to walk across a swinging bridge which was pretty cool. The sand flies attacked D and we had to leave. The Denniston incline was very interesting, it was a remarkable feat of engineering in its time. It is a shame that they don't preserve and endorses its character but it was awesome to stand by the tracks & imagine the process. The view from this old mine & it's history was a worthwhile experience...but drive up there. We're a bit sceptical about the whole town catching fire after the road was formed...Insurance pay out or ligit? Hmm whatcha think Michael Moore?! I've attached a photo of the seal colony. At first glance we couldn't see any but then the rocks moved..so it turned into a 'where's Wally' competition. Have a look at the photo & see if you can spot any. One of the most amazing places I've ever seen & it was all free..veered off the track down to the beach..white sand, blue water, clear sky & a picturesque landscape you'd loose yourself in.
