Our trip is coming to a close soon, and we have mixed feelings. We are ready to be home and have all of the comforts that we have missed, but we know that once we pull into mom and dad's driveway, we must give up the mountains, and the rivers, and the giant forests... We are happy to trade all of this for being at home with a loving family, a comfortable bed, and warm meals. Thankfully we have memories and photos that we will be able to reflect on when we long for the natural beauty that the west so graciously provides. We've seen a lot of beauty since our last post, almost too much for words. Please enjoy the photos - hopefully they will convey what we cannot.... read more

Today marks exactly one month since the day Madison and I embarked on the grandest adventure of our lives. I'm sitting in the passenger seat of our beloved van while Maddie guides it gently along the winding road that borders Lake Tahoe. I've grown fond of this car. It has been with us through every moment of this trip. The van has moved trough some of the most breathtakingly beautiful landscapes this country has to offer. It has climbed up mountains and explored valleys. It's heard the belly laughter of two sisters (and heard them argue). It cradles our dried wildflowers in its dash. It keeps us safe and (semi) comfortable at night. The space inside this vehicle is sacred. I like to think it is forever blessed by the journey on which it has taken ... read more

Madison and I have reunited after spending a week in Southern California with our friends. We were spoiled with lots of treats and down time at the beach. Madison lived the Hollywood life for a while and I roughed it in Joshua Tree climbing around on big rocks. Our friends took great care of us knowing that we had been living out of a van for a few weeks. Thanks Arielle, Mara, Lane, and Jason! We're so grateful for a restful week, but we're definitely happy to be on the road together again. As I type this, we're driving into Sequoia National Park! Enjoy some of the pictures from this past week and we'll post again soon!... read more

Here are a few fun facts about our driving habits: 1. We usually have the windows rolled down, blaring either John Mayer or alt-J. 2. Only once have I chauffeured Kayli around while she was still sleeping in bed. 3. We never drive at night. 4. We stop to explore whenever we desire. 5. We are passed by most, including semis because we rarely drive above 50 M.P.H. (We just smile and wave) With this last fact in mind, you can imagine how overwhelmed we were upon entering San Diego. We were forced to drive at speeds our poor little van could barely handle. Where are all of these people going in such a hurry anyway? After a stressful few hours on the freeway, Kayli and I found comfort in the most unlikely of places, the ... read more

Hello once again friends and family! Don't worry - you haven't been forgotten. We have just been busy creating stories to share with you! This time, we will tell you all about our experiences in the great and diverse state of Arizona. Buckle up, it's a long ride. Since our last post, we have traveled up and down and all around the state (including the Grand Canyon!). We entered the state through the southeast and drove into Tucson. Here, we spent the day on University of Arizona's version of Kirkwood Avenue. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Kirkwood (shame on you), it is the main drag in Bloomington, Indiana, and a place that Madison and I call home. At the end of the street, we were surprised to see what we interpreted as the ... read more

As we were silently walking through the canyons along the dry riverbed, I was visited by our 7 and 8-year-old selves. I kept having remembrances of exploring the cornfields out behind our house. I had the realization that we are still those little girls with the same adventurous spirit, only time has moved forward and that spirit has brought us here, exploring lands much further beyond our backyard. We still take the time to stop and examine things in the mud; we are still pocketing rocks that we deem "cool" and we still have a sense of endless wonder and amazement of the natural world around us. This got me thinking, maybe time isn't what changes us. I am still that 7-year-old girl. I just haven't had the time or patience to listen to her in ... read more

Hola from New Mexico! We are writing to you all from a McDonald's in Silver City. (Thanks again, Mom, for the gift card!) Madison and I let go of a sigh of relief when we walked into this McDonald's to see several other transients with their laptops and no NO LOITERING signs. It can be difficult occasionally to find places to hang out when we need a break from van life. We've relied heavily on the Big 3: McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts, and Walmart. Walmart has been our saving grace - we sleep in its parking lots every night. They actually invite travelers to stay. Most Walmarts even provide 24 hour roaming security. Thanks Walmart! So, we've come a long way since Amarillo. We traveled through snow and heavy fog to get to Santa Fe. On the ... read more

Greetings from Texas! We are sitting in a Starbucks off of the main drag in Amarillo. (The Dunkin' Donuts doesn't have wifi.) It's looking a bit like Indiana here - 20 degrees and gray skies. The perfect weather for relaxing indoors with warm coffee and electronics. Thanks for the Starbucks gift card, Mom! It's amazing what a $5 gift card can get you on the road: a place to sit (outside of the van), recharge your electronics, drink coffee, brush your teeth! But the best part about sitting in these coffee shops along the way is meeting different types of people. I'm sitting here watching a middle aged man who resembles Christopher Walken dance to a Taylor Swift song. Madison was reprimanded by an older gentleman for not wearing her coat. People are good. The buzz ... read more

The sun came out yesterday and today for the first time since our departure. With it's arrival came a deepened sense of gratitude. The sun always provides me with a fresh perspective. I want to make sure I take the time to express my gratitude for the many things and people that have supported us on this adventure. First and foremost, we could not have done this without our parents. Our mom was so kind to let us borrow (and gut) her van. Every time I look behind me from the driver's seat I chuckle a little. We have our futon and bedding, and then 4 baskets of seemingly endless food (also thanks to mom and dad.) Something that I lose sight of quite frequently is the appreciation of having my sister to travel with, we ... read more
