A week of skiing in the Swiss Alps, what could be better? How about getting paid to ski in the Swiss Alps... yeah that sounded pretty good to me last autumn when I agreed to go with my host family on their ski holiday. So after taking a weekend to prepare myself for what would be a nice ski holiday I left on monday afternoon to take the 2 hour train/bus ride to Lenzerheide. The trip up to the mountains was not at all a boring one, after a very warm week the hills that I passed looked ready for the flowers of spring to start blooming. I certainly felt like spring had come, because lugging my backpack around Switzerland was quite a bit of exercise. Upon arrival Dominik picked me up in town and took ... read more

"Why is there confetti in my purse and how did it get everywhere else?" This brief thought seemed to be one of many like it that I asked myself while in Bern for the Fasnacht festival. It was a whirlwind event filled with bright colors and blue skies, something that Ashley, Kate and I found ourselves enjoying to the fullest. Since we were unable to make it to the famous Fasnacht's in Lucern or Basel, Ashley found out that we would be able to go to Switzerland's capital city to see theirs. Although Bern is thought to be a boring city, which I can attest to on the day's when there is no festival going on, it turned out to be one of my favorite things I have done in Switzerland thus far. Not only did ... read more

You know you are a Swiss Au-pair when... * you know how to 'properly' tuck mittens into coats * you've picked up some bad gramatical habits instead of teaching the kids some good ones * you can navigate the roads and roundabouts in zurich and find the place you need to go to...even if it happens by accident * you wonder if you'll ever see sunshine again * you can... carry a months worth of supplies up a snowy mountain side in the pitch dark to stay for 36 hours and then carry it all back down and load it into the car again * you find yourself with extra charges...neighbours, dogs, etc. * you think that the house you live in probably has the best view in the world * you watch WAY too much ... read more

So this past weekend Ashley, Kate and I decided to try out the famous sledging run at the "top of Zürich" aka the Uetliberg. This was also the same place where in October my friends and I took a massive hike up several wrong turns and ended up climbing several thousand stairs to get to the top. Taking 4 hours to complete and ending with all of us wishing we had been in better shape. I luckily was in better shape because of all the running I had been doing along Lake Zürich managing to finish about 30 minutes faster than my two friends. Anyways, the three of us borrowed sleds from the families we work for and took the train from the HB to the last stop on the Uetliberg train. We were packed onto ... read more

So after months of neglecting to write in this blog about Switzerland I have finally decided to start it back up again. Much has happened since I last wrote back in August and I will try my best to give a brief accounting of what has occurred. September: Went with Ashley to Liechtenstein to do a little hiking through the hill that the country is located on. I say hill because the country is only about 21 square miles in size. A small monarchy still resides there and even has a castle to show for it. Nikki came to visit on a break from her tour in Afghanistan, a much needed respite from the warfare. During her vacation I took her to the highest railway station in Europe called the Jungfrauloch. Which as its name states ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Uster August 29th 2009

The place: A dingy bar in a small town called Uster, filled to the brim with smoke from the cigarettes of the patrons that frequent the area and enjoy the company of others like them who also smell of stale beer. Reasons for being there... 1) Sheer and complete boredom 2) Wish for a good old college bar atmosphere 3) Drink prices 4) Relative closeness to Ashley's apartment/townhouse It may have been our utter lack of originality but for some reason on this Friday night we decided to stay close to where we were staying for the night and go out in the nearby town. I use the word town loosely because it technically is not called a town but a village. The offerings in this village are larger than Bäch, my current place of residency, ... read more

I am convinced that Europeans enjoy scaring the bejesus out of me whilst I am driving. So far I have driven a grand total of three times in this lovely country and each time I seem to learn something new about the locals driving techniques or lack there of. Granted I cannot really judge them too harshly because my own skills would fall far below of what most would consider fantastic abilities behind the wheel but at least I can stay in my own lane without causing near panic attacks to my passengers... anymore (I swear Jezl that I will never again pass so many cars on the freeway, promise). Most of the near accidents have involved bikers and their right to the road. Now I understand that they should be given certain privileges when it ... read more

It has been a few days and already I am behind on my writings. This week has been incredibly busy, working about 50 hours in total with one day starting at 7:30am and ending at midnight. During the week it seems like I will not have too much time to myself, which is fine now since I don't really have too many people in my phone yet. However I just don't know if I will be able to continue this pace for a whole year. I am hoping that once all the kids activities begin my time to myself will increase. The weather for the past few days has been warmer than what I would like to be in normally, but seeing as how it is coming towards the end of summer I can't complain. It ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich August 10th 2009

So it was my first day on the job today as an Au-Pair. Everything was going very smoothly all morning, with no problems. I made breakfast, got the kids up with the help of their Mom and after learning the security code went back to my apartment. Waiting patiently until Sean came home for lunch. And then I tried to unlock the door and turn off the alarm... I thought I had done it correctly after it stopped making noises, so I sat down to read my book. That's when the cops showed up, two of them to be exact. It isn't like they could just stroll in, they actually had to climb over the fence and start walking around the house with flashlights in hand. Must say I was rather surprised to see them and ... read more

It is officially the last day of my first weekend in Zurich. After overcoming my airsickness that lasted through Copenhagen and jet lag, which lasted until today, I feel completely aware of my surroundings. The first two days in Switzerland where spent unpacking in my new apartment, location bottom floor of a guesthouse situated next to Lake Zurich. Not at all a bad place to be. The village that I live in is small, only 1,100 residents but does have everything you could need close at hand. For example should I wish to have chicken for dinner, the local butcher is only a 3 minute walk away, does fresh baked bread strike your fancy well go across the street to the bakery and pick up a loaf. Don't need to buy any food but have to ... read more
