A perfect setting for a barbecue, Taishoen the bonsai nursery where Mario works - luckily there were no accidents involving fire! Bec, Peter and I joined the other guys currently working at the nursery - Steve from USA, David from Spain and Maarten from The Netherlands (who claims to have never smoked weed!!). So it was quite a mix of people!! We were from five different countries in all! We had a nice dinner with plenty of meat and seafood. After we were a little boozed, we headed to Boozer on bicycles! Maybe not so new for Europeans, but for us Australians it is quite funny I think! Especially when there were 6 people and only 4 bicycles! Somehow, Mario, Bec, Pete and I ended up at Etti club dancing on the stage and I think ... read more

It’s well and truly summer in Japan - umbrellas, gloves, snakes and spiders! The rice and corn has begun growing. The hydrangeas are in full bloom. Workmen are wearing sweat towels on their heads. Women are wearing elbow length gloves (yes, in summer, to protect their white skin from the sun and holding sun umbrellas. Another essential for women is a small face towel which they use to pat themselves dry from the heat. Frogs are noisy. There are bugs everywhere, some that I have never even seen before! And spiders! I killed four today in the classroom! They are strange looking too, and jump! ... read more

Nothing much has really happened this past month, but I have a lot to look forward to...visitors...holidays...festivals...yay it's summer! Kindy is busy so the weeks are flying! I'm loving teaching the Bear Class (5 and 6 year olds) and enjoying interacting with them and being able to communicate with them in English. Their personalities are great, although some are very cheeky - Yuki has become Mr Muddle (from the Mr Men books I brought with me) and says and does everything backwards! Haha! Last Saturday morning (8:30am!), staff from MEK (the Kindy) were invited to one of the schools of ex-MEK students'. It was really interesting to see a Japanese school and the children were really excited and appreciative that we were there! Most of the children that have left MEK still attend afternoon tuition once ... read more

On Saturday, Mario and I, along with 'Blue Angel', caught the ferry from Shimizu to Toi. After some takoyaki (octopus balls) for breakfast, we geared up and set off to Koibito Misaki - Sweet Lovers Point. We headed down the coast to a monkey park, then had a nap in the grass, before stopping at the southern most tip of the peninsula - Irozaki. We then continued to drive, actually ride, around the coast, checked out another beach and then decided to return to Irozaki for sunset. It was soooo windy at the top there was a bell that began ringing by itself! We stayed the night at a nice onsen (hot spring) ryokan in Shimoda and after our baths (separately), I was spoiled with Moet and strawberries! We got up early (for Japan standards) and ... read more

My second month back in Japan is going a lot faster than the first! Kindy has kept me very busy, still doing extra late night tuition grrr! Also been busy going out on the weekends and to the Kusanagi Onsen the last two Mondays. An onsen is a natural hot spring and the mineral content is believed to have healing powers. At the one we (Bec, Mario and I) go to there are several baths at different temperatures and some with jets. There are also some outside, I like these ones the best, you could almost fall asleep, however the fact that you have to be totally naked does put me off a little!!! You are allowed to take in a small towel but most of the women (men and women are separate, much to Mario's ... read more

Always a festival on in Japan! During Golden Week (basically lots of public holidays in a row) in Japan, Rebekah, Cate and I went on a short holiday to Hiroshima. After 4 hours sitting on the floor of the Shinkansen bullet train, as we left it too late to buy reserved seat tickets, we arrived at Hiroshima Station. We finally found our accommodation, Ryokan Sansui, and then were taken for a short walk down the road, to a hole in the wall and a narrow passage that lead to our room! We took the stairs up to find our huge room, it was very nice! We spent the afternoon exploring our surroundings, finding out that the annual flower festival was on…so great atmosphere and festival food! We walked along Peace Boulevard, through Peace Memorial Park to ... read more

I have been back in Japan for a month now and am all settled again. I am living in a new place which I love! (see photos) It was fun going back to kindy and the kids all remembering me! The parents were also happy, making my return all the more worthwhile. I have the ‘Bear Class’ this year. The Bears are the eldest class at MEK (the kindy) and are all 5 and 6 years old. Rebekah (who replaced me when I left in December and lived with Amy), now has the Panda Class (4 year olds) and Cate, the new teacher, who arrived the same time as me this year, has the baby Koalas (3 years old). They are so small and cute, but I love them all!! Kindy is busy as always, with ... read more

Yes, I'm back in Japan for another year! I have had a great, busy, first week back, despite being homeless! I had some delays moving but was ok because I got to stay at the Mansion and spend some time with Amy before she left for London. Cate, the new Koala Class teacher, arrived on the night of my birthday. She soon joined in with us drinking and playing Jungle Speed! The Mansion was a full house! On Saturday, Amy, Rebekah, Cate, Simon and I, drove to Fuji-10 to enjoy the second to last day of snow season. It was my (and Cate's) first time snowboarding and we had so much fun - stacking it and then learning fast as we braved the chair lift to the top, facing the long, steep and icy slope down. ... read more

I am making a bit of a habit of having going away and coming home parties, it is starting to feel ridiculous! I just can't keep still! I enjoyed my last few weeks in Adelaide, going to the Adelaide Cup, Norwood Food and Wine Festival, Botanic Gardens, seeing a few shows at the Fringe Festival, partying, and catching up with family and friends for the last time in a year. Sniff! I will miss you all! Enjoy the photos, especially if it is your photo debut on my blog! ... read more

I'm Home...but not for long! Well it has been just over two months since I have returned home from my one year in Japan, but feels like I have been home for six! I have been so busy since returning, got a new job, holidayed in Melbourne, done a lot of Adelaide sightseeing, visited Danielle in the country for a weekend, and decided to return to Japan for another year! Christmas on a Farm Christmas Day, the day after I returned, was spent with my family at my Uncles house. He has a huge property with dams, lots of fruit trees and many animals...including a sly red bellied black snake which literally made me freeze in my tracks! Tadaima Party Tadaima in Japanese means "im home" and is what Amy and I use to say as ... read more
