6th August Day 10 Chitimba Beach, Malawi to Iringa, Tanzania We had an early start this morning and pretty much drove all day with a border crossing into Tanzania taking quite a while. We stopped at a gas station for lunch….yes we only go to the best places on this tour! And we hit a bit of an all time low point with the food situation as we ran out of salad and meat with 7 people still left to eat. It seems that food is a whole lot more expensive in East Africa and the budget just wasn’t covering all our expenses. We made it to camp at Iringa just on sunset and managed to get our tent up fast and run to the showers before the other trucks arrived in camp. It was bliss…..we ... read more

5th August Day 9 Chitimba Beach, Malawi Kath and I decided to have a quiet day today as we were still recovering from the sangria night and the travels from the previous day…..we must be getting old!! Some of the group did the 36km round trip walk to Livingstonia Mission up in the hills but as it meant a 5am wake up it really didn’t appeal to us! Meanwhile some of the staff at the camp ground gave Freddy a bath inside and out…we’d managed to trapse a whole lot of mud inside back in the forest and it wasn’t pretty! We slept in past 8am…a treat after so many early mornings and had a leisurely morning chatting with the others who’d stayed behind and visiting the craft market stalls just outside the camp gates. We ... read more

1st August Day 5 South Luangwa National Park to Luwawa Forest We all managed to wake up up on time except for our 84 year old group member….yes 84 years of age! The age range on our tour is from 19 to 84 which makes for interesting conversations :-) We had a quick breakfast and were on the road just after 6am….travelling back along the same bumpy road back to Chipata to pick up provisions for the next few days in Malawi and our planned sangria (made by our one and only Spaniard on the tour and pasta night (cooked by the single Italian guy on the tour) at Kande Beach. This was our last chance to spend our Zambian Kwacha as we were heading to the Malawi border. Chipata is close to the border and ... read more

Hi everyone......we're struggling to find good internet access on this trip so will be loading blogs by country from now on. 28th August - Nomad Tour Day 1 Victoria Falls to Lusaka Kath and I woke early as we had to be at our tour start point by 7.45….a short walk away although laden down with our heavy packs, bottle of gin and other things it took us a while to get there….. but we made it and sat down for a coffee to wait for the rest of the tour group to arrive……2 hours later we actually left the lodge and picked up people along the way. So we finally made it to the border after 9am and walked across the bridge to Zambia and tried to avoid being accosted by the huge baboons that ... read more

So what’s been happening over the last few days, I hear you ask?? Well not much, Kath and I have been spending very lazy days by the pool peppered with short walks to the supermarket or other shops. In retrospect 10 days in Vic Falls was probably a few days too many but it’s also kind of nice to get a good feel for the place and chat with same locals etc. Whenever we leave the rest camp we end up with a couple of guys approaching us trying sell carvings or any one of the ridiculous Zim notes in the billions and trillions of dollars, most of these guys have chosen “English” names for themselves….among the many that we’ve met there’s been Peter Pumpkin, Christopher Columbus, King George and Prince; all coming out with some ... read more

Hey everyone We're still in Victoria Falls.....not a bad place to be for an extended stay. After I wrote the last blog we spent a few hours down at the falls and were amazed at the water level as it was so much higher than last time we were here in September 2009. The spray from the falls was pretty intense and we got a bit wet. There aren't many people around at the moment so we were able to stroll around the grounds and enjoy the fantastic views and saw the odd babboon and a family of mongoose...very cute! That evening we wandered back to the Vic Falls Hotel for cocktails on the veranda sitting amongst the granduer of the hotel with the sound of the falls in the background. We had decided to treat ... read more

Hi Everyone Well we're back in Vic Falls and it's great to be back....nothing much has changed around here, still as laid back as ever :-) Although it hasn't exactly been a smooth run getting here........ I left Auckland on Saturday 17th early in the morning bound for Joburg via Melbourne.....I managed to make my tight transfer at Melbourne airport and met up with Kath my travel buddy. We had a hellish 15 hours flying time which dragged very slowly especially as there was a poor baby 2 rows in front who wailed the whole trip, the service was the worst I've ever had on V Australia and it was soooooo hot in the cabin. But anyhoo we made it to Joburg safe and sound, my bag on the other hand did not......I'm still waiting to ... read more

Hello everyone from sunny Katikati!! Well most of you will already know that I'm back from my travels and have been for a while now....I seem to have lost interest in updating this blog when the trip came to an end! After my 5 weeks in Thailand and Cambodia I returned to Sydney but didn't hang around very long, I instead flew on to Adelaide to catch up with Tory before I head back to NZ. We spent the whole time I was there down at Victor Harbour which for those of you who don't know is about 1 hour from Adelaide on the coast, it's a lovely little holiday town with a fabulous beach and the best hot dogs in the world! Tory and I went for a few bike rides....with a lovely lunch at ... read more

Hi everyone Well I've been a little slack with my updates lately.....but better late than never! When I last wrote I had arrived in Siem Reap and I was very excited about the days ahead of me exploring the temples in the area. I was staying in the Ta Som guest house which was pretty basic but at us$12 per night you couldn't expect too much....and that price included breakfast! So after I'd eaten my eggs, french bread and fruit (Yum!) washed down with a coffee laden with condensed milk (not so yum!) my friendly tuk tuk driver turned up to drive me around some of the temples. We managed to see 8 different temples on the first day including Angkor Wat (the main temple) and some of Angkor Thom (the town/city), my favourite of the ... read more
