Last night was pretty fun yet also pretty crazy. Being as though it was St Patty’s day our hostel had some live music and green beer for everyone to enjoy. Brett and I met up with two girls that we met at Macchu Picchu, one was Peruvian but lives in San Diego and the other was American living in Philly. They were both in the Navy together and their names were Marylin and Whitney respectively. We met them at their hotel and then came back to our hostel to hear the band play. We stayed for a few beers then went out to the discoteca to do some dancing. They were really nice girls and we had a great time. We went to the same bar that Mayra and I had been to the night before ... read more

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day everyone. I need to get the fuck out of Cusco! I have been here way too long. Last night we got back from Macchu Picchu around ten or so and Mayra was at the hostel. She was being coy and playing games with me which was pissing me off because I was exhausted and just wanted to hang out. She was with a friend of hers and told me to meet her at a bar nearby and so I went and she wasn’t there initially and then she showed up after a while. We went to another discoteca and we danced and drank rum and cokes all night long. It was a really great time until she got super hammered and things started to go sideways. I won’t elaborate too much on ... read more

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inca_Trail_to_Machu_Picchu “There are no words that can tell the hidden spirit of the wilderness that can reveal its mystery, its melancholy, its charm. There is delight in the hardy life of the open…in the thrill of the fight with dangerous game. Apart from this, yet mingled with it is the strong attraction of the silent places, of the large tropic moons, and the splendor of the new stars where the wanderer sees the awful glory of sunrise and sunset in the wide waste spaces of the earth, unworn of man, and changed only by the slow change of the ages through time everlasting.” -- Theodore Roosevelt Khartoum, Sudan 1910 Our adventure on the Inca trail started early at 445a when we woke up and went to the lobby to meet Ivan, our guide for the trip. ... read more

Raquel left early and we said our goodbyes, it was sad to see her go and she said she would miss me. I’m going to miss her too she was a really cool girl. We slept till around noon and since Brett lost his debit card we went to the bank to see if it was there since he thought he left it in the machine. It wasn’t there so we had lunch, I loaned him some money and we came back to the hostel to prepare for the Inca Trail tomorrow. I packed up my day bag with everything I’ll need for the hike and put the rest of the stuff in my big bag which I will leave here at Pariwana Hostel in their storage room, it’s free and since we will have to ... read more

Last night I went out to dinner with Raquel. Brett wasn’t hungry so he stayed back at the hostel and they were having Pub Quiz night which is essentially trivia night here. Raquel and I walked down the way from our hostel to try and eat at this place that Carl recommended to us however it was closed. We decided to walk closer to the Plaza de Armas and try and find a place to eat since it was a little later than normal for the Cusquenans. It was raining lightly as we walked up the nearly deserted streets and we were accosted by Maître D's that wanted our business. We settled on a restaurant that had a menu for 8 soles and we got a soup, a main course and then a drink. We noticed ... read more

We woke up today around 1400 and that is probably the latest I have slept in ten years. I got up and talked to Mayra a bit to try and smooth some things over that I may or may not have drunkenly said to her the other night via Facebook. She was pissed but I called her and she got over it pretty quickly. Then I had some of the orange juice we bought which was delicious. As I was lying in my bed still slowly recovering from the craziness that was the previous night two new companeros joined the room. A Japanese guy who spoke no Spanish and no English so that was kind of wash, and a girl named Raquel from Madrid. She had been living and working in Colombia for the last three ... read more

I didn’t do much today. I wanted to give my burnt out legs some rest since they were seriously messed up from the last few days. I woke up leisurely around ten or eleven and got myself a book from the hostel, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It’s a pretty serious book but I have wanted to read it for a long time and I figured what the hell else do I have to do? I sat out in the courtyard and read for a while in the sun, I took my shirt off for about a half hour and got pretty pink. Of course the sun is so much closer to us here and I took for granted that fact. Oh well it’s not too bad this time thank god, however ... read more

We woke up this morning to the Argentinian girls rummaging around again, and fussing with their plastic bags which woke me up around 7am which didn’t please me. I went back to sleep for a while till around ten and then Brett and I had some breakfast at the hostel which consisted of bread, jam and butter, I also had some cheese today on mine to change things up. The guy who gave me the cheese is named Rick and he is a bro from the US. He had some money problems, his debit card was stolen and he had nothing. I load him 150 American dollars and his mom deposited the money into my bank account back in the states. I thought that was pretty good karma and he couldn’t have been happier because he ... read more

I had a lot of bad dreams last night for some reason. Brett said the same thing. I am thinking it’s because of the lack of oxygen up here and our bodies not fully acclimated to the surroundings. I had to use the bathroom a few times during the night and it isn’t as close as our last hostel so it was a cold walk to the bathroom since it is very chilly at night. My leg was still bothering me a little but I woke up and it was much better. There were two dudes who left at 5am to go to the Inca trail today and then there were about four Icelandic girls and Argentinian girls in our room who came back here at like 4-5am as well so it wasn’t all that pleasant ... read more

Today we arrived in Cusco. We left Lima around 7am to go to the airport which wasn’t that big of a deal at all, less so than I anticipated. We got there and checked in and made it through security where I promptly pulled a muscle in my leg tying my shoes of all things. Fuck. It still hurts and I have been stretching it. I am pretty sure it will be fine by the time I get to the Inca trail which is next Sunday so I have some time. We got here and immediately I could feel the difference in the air, the simplest tasks like grabbing my luggage left me out of breath and dizzy. We are 11,000+ feet above sea level, which is extremely high. We took a taxi through the city ... read more
