Geo: -42.7667, -65.0333The ship docked in Puerto Madryn , Patagonia, Argentina. You don't visit this continent to see the architecture so we took the tour to the Valdes Peninsula jutting out between the Gulfs of San Jose and Nuevo. This is a vast nature reserve which also lives in symbiosis with the sheep farmers. The sheep are Merinos a hardy variety which can survive on the flat gorse filled steppes. On the way we saw a grey fox about the same size as the ones we see in our back garden at home but much more shy. There are also lots of Guanacos which are a type of Llama. They are elegant but have a fierce temper with the ability to spit like camels and are not domesticated but live on the same land as the ... read more

Geo: -34.8939, -56.1568A day in MontevideoWe moored up at the port in the morning, so after breakfast we took the shuttle bus to Independence Square. On the way we were told that 6th January is 3 Kings day- a public holiday when kids get presents so every where would be closed- great! We saw the Presidential building in the square and various other buildings- not too exciting. Found an open art gallery of local artists which was good and we could see that if the city was open it would be a lovely place to walk around. As it was we had a quiet beer in a bar and walked back to the ship for lunch.... read more

Geo: -34.5761, -58.4088After a night on board the BA flight from London to Buenos Aires, it was good to get to the hotel. We took a taxi from the airport as it is about an hour into the city. Initially the outskirts reminded us of Bangkok or Cairo. There are new buildings interspersed with old chaotic ones. As with any city though it has its rich and poor areas. After checking into the hotel, which is full of very helpful staff, we walked around the city. The main art gallery was closed on Mondays so we went to the Cemetery to walk around the city of the dead. Sounds gruesome but this is worth a visit. Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Sadly we had to leave the lovely hotel in Chiang Mai, but the luxury was to continue. The hotel limo whisked us to the airport and we were soon on the short flight to Bangkok. Another limo picked us up and back we went to the Oriental, which has always been my favourite hotel. It is now under new management so we were hoping that things werent going to change. The room did not disappoint as always. This time we are on the 15th floor with river view and balcony. We sat on the balcony and had a beer while the floor butler unpacked our stuff- sheer decadence I know but you only live once. Being a Sunday most of the local shops were closed and round the pool was extremely busy so we ... read more

Geo: 18.8, 98.98Looking back at the past week, I think the highlights of touring were definitely the Elephant Camp, though may be not the bamboo rafting. The large Wat on the mountain is worth organising a ride to get to. The Monkey show is awful. For 200 baht you get to see about a dozen monkeys all in chains and looking very unhappy doing things they wouldnt normally do. We only stayed 5 minutes and walked out. The trip to the Orchid Farm was very nice if you like orchids as I do. For 40 baht you can wander around the lovely garden and see some lovely species. We bought some nusery plants sealed in a bottle, which we have to remember not to leave on our balcony when we pack today. Chiang Mai city is ... read more

Geo: 18.8, 98.98Never ever thought we would indulge in this activity, but suitably attired in farmers outfits and coolie hats we were let loose in a paddy field in order to plant some young rice shoots. They had to be well spaced and in straight lines , and I am proud to say the farmer judged mine to be the best. Stefan's looked as if an elephant had trampled through but hopefully it will grow as the rice grown is given away to the monks. It was a very muddy job but good to see how hard the farmers have to work and learn about rice growing. We also got to ride on a water buffalo who was very sweet and patient, but not easy to ride bare back as they really roll when they walk. ... read more

Geo: 18.4972, 98.3711Having had one lazy day at the hotel, we had to do some serious sightseeing. There are lots of Wats or temples in Chiang Mai. After looking round the first we were waylaid by a taxi driver who offered to drive us round to the important ones for a good price. We were very pleased to do this as Chiang Mai is quite a large place and it was too hot to walk miles around. We saw the 5 best ones each different but containing lots of Buddhas. Karan (probably not how to spell his name) waited while we had a beer half way round and later took us to a shop (in order to get his petrol;coupon for taking us there). Must confess it was a lovely shop and we bought a jade ... read more

Geo: 18.4972, 98.3711The first morning at the hotel we took the cultural tour of the grounds. The hotel was built 10 years ago by a very rich philanthropist who bought the land as paddy fields and then set about creating a small city in the Lanna style. So it has walls,a moat, its own paddy fields, temple etc. It is the most beautiful hotel we have ever stayed in and I can highly recommend it. The Manager Greg kindly showed us some of the villas, which are dotted all around the grounds and have spectacular views. We would love to stay in a villa next time although the Colonial suites cannot be faulted. The staff are very attentive and so polite- one aspect of Thailand I loveAfter the tour we sat by the pool and had a light ... read more

Geo: 13.75, 100.517We had had an overnight flight to Bangkok from Heathrow and although a 2 hour wait in the airport was tedious, especially as the lounge had no alcohol,, we were glad we were not out in the pouring rain. It was only an hours flight to Chang Mai- Thai airways so no alcohol again-.From the airport we were whisked away in a long black limo to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. This is a sumptuous place which was built only 10 years ago in 60 acres with its own paddy fields. Although new, the place is full of genuine antiques and the decorations are original and old. After check in we hastened to the Horn bar, so called because of the wierd creatures with horns decorating the walls and had that welcome beer. Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Tremezzo July 13th 2009

Geo: 45.9846, 9.2197Flew from Heathrow to Milan then by car up to the hotel. It is one of the old grand Italian Hotels- wide corridors, lovely old furniture, chandeliers and lots of flunkies in uniform. Our room overlooked the lake and the first thing to do was to have drinks on the terrace with our friends Paul & Jane. A preprandial of champagne in their suite before dinner, which we had in the hotel. We only had 3 days to pack in all the sights, so the first day we caught the ferry over to Varenna on the other side of the lake. It is a long steep walk up to castle Vezio but it is worth it. The views are great and the modern sculptures which look like white dementors are worth seeing. It was back ... read more
