My parents had a little trouble with the immigration; since they are government employees, they were supposed to secure some kind of clearance from their heads which we didn’t know about! The good thing was, we had it all sorted out thanks to being Waray-Waray. Everyone is here for Tatay’s (Dad’s) Birthday Trip! Every single one is home for our little get-away -- my two brothers, my sister, my Nanay(Mum), of course Tatay(Dad), and even the extended family/family-in-law is here! brother-in-law, sister-in-law, my sister’s mother-in-law, and my three year old nephew who has been telling his playmates that he is headed to Hong Kong. HK was an easy choice since my sister & I have already been and we found it easy finding our way around. Also, my nephew wanted to meet Mickey and my Mum ... read more

For us who travel, the word scam has a very special place in our hearts. For me they mostly appear in the form of taxi drivers...them who asked for ‘fixed prices’, those who post additional charges because they went through a bad traffic, them who wouldn’t use the taxi meter and end up with a $urpri$e €harge in the end, et al. I feel like a trouble magnet when it comes to them. Well...the good news is, our Indochina Trip last year offered a bit of variety ;) Vietnam ...we really didn’t had much problem here, just the usual taxi drivers and buses trying to rip us off every opportunity given. To avoid this kind of incidents, we’d usually ask hotel receptionist how much it should cost us to buy things or to commute to certain ... read more

My third birthday journal in Travelblog. I have about five drafted travel stories waiting to be finished, I had to oblige myself to finish this one. It's the second consecutive year that I have been spending birthdays in the province of Zambales, camping and trying to find that 'peace and quiet' that I'm always in search of. I spent the day in a beautiful Island called Magalawa, fifteen minutes boat ride from the Oslet Armada Fishdealer Compound in Brgy. Luan, Palauig Zambales. The first part of the journey was the four hours coach ride through the Iba Zambales route; we arrived at Iba Bus Terminal around three in the morning, an hour early than planned. We then had to wait for another hour for our transport to Brgy. Luan, which was another thirty minutes drive from ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Batanes » Batan » Basco City March 27th 2011

First Part : Second Part : The Sunday Catholic mass was yet another challenge. The service was spoken in Ivatan, a totally different language from the other three Filipino languages I know. But upon recognizing the presence of the ‘tourists’, the priest then carried on with the homily in Tagalog (Philippine National Language) and welcomed us in Basco. Although I did not understand most of what was said during the liturgy, it was one of the most solemn services I’ve attended, clearly not done in haste. It rained the whole morning until it hushed into subtle drizzles later in the afternoon; we were finally able to go biking! I was very much on a biking mode excitedly pedalling on my old Dutch-Style bicycle on our way to the Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel three kilometres away from the ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Batanes » Sabtang March 25th 2011

First Part : It was another early start of the day, up by dawn to catch the 06:00AM Falowa to Sabtang. It was steep cliffs, sharp curves, and varied mountain scenery on the way to San Vicente port, with our constant companion the cold wind and drizzle. Below the cliffs are the harsh waves crashing to its base forming white foams and turning noticeable blue (in much of my fascination) as they hit sharply to the rocks. The boat ride to Sabtang Island was thus far the most exciting part of the trip - seated in an Ivatan Boat called Falowa (an oval shaped motorized passenger boat without the outrigger) with around 15 other passengers, we were shortly greeted by waves double the size of our vessel, if not triple! Coming face to face with waves ... read more

The windswept city located at the northern most part of the Philippines hence the sturdy stone houses. The mountainous region of Batanes is the country’s smallest province isolated from the rest of the Philippine islands, home to the laid back Ivatans. Only three of the ten islands in the province are inhabited, Itbayat, Sabtang, and the capital Basco; with majority of its population being fishermen or farmers. It's surrounded by vast waters as far as the eye can see and is the only province of the country that experiences four seasons. And with or without a Pacquiao fight, the province is relatively crime-free. I waited for a year for this trip and then there it went…my first ever cancelled flight! I felt totally disappointed, gutted was an understatement. I was totally hyped and excited the previous ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Cagayan De Oro February 14th 2011

The taxi driver was driving like a mad man; I guess he took it too seriously when I told him he really really had to hurry because I am very much running late – yea, cramming again – but made it on time once again (thanks to the crazy driving) to meet up with Martin, Lori, and Ren at the Airport. Our plane took off at around four in the morning and by half past five I was already eating pancakes at Jollibee Cagayan De Oro, Mindanao at last! The city is nice and clean, it somehow reminds me of Sabah. Most people, especially the cab/taxi drivers would speak to us in the local dialect, Bisaya, even if we talk to them in Tagalog; we didn’t mind much since our dialect (Martin & I) is somewhat ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Baguio February 6th 2011

It was a special bonding trip with my little cousins and little brother (who are not so little anymore), we initially wanted to go to El Nido in Palawan, then changed the plan to Coco Beach Resort in Puerto Galera, until we finally settled with Food Trip in Baguio - Surfing in La Union - and the 100 islands in Pangasinan. For our first stop, we managed to get on a non-stop Deluxe Bus bound to Baguio - we had our own 'special' lounge while waiting for departure, a bus hostess, snacks, toilet, comfy reclining seats and free Wi-Fi; oh, Hollywood! We left at midnight and arrived just before 5:00 in the morning. The taxi driver we hired helped us find an affordable hotel since we didn't had prior reservations. And as affordable as it was, ... read more

Another Trekker (referring to us): These people don’t have trekking standards. Rodger:Yeah, because the only standard we know is Programming standards ^_^ We had the trek "planned" a couple of months back, but I personally didn’t research about the area - all I know was that we were going to trek 4 waterfalls at Mt. Romelo at Siniloan, Laguna. We pretty much did not expect more than an hour trek and we thought a day trip would suffice; so on the day of the trek, Rodger, Janet, Yami, and I simply went with our flip flops and our usual everyday shorts/shirt, expecting a fairly easy hike. Since we missed the 06:00AM bus that morning, we arrived at the jump-off point in barangay Macatad a little late than scheduled and from there, an old lady helped us ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Zambales » Pundaquit November 27th 2010

It took the bus four hours to get to San Antonio where we met our guide/boatman Kuya Mike. The last time we went to Pundaquit for camping, it only took us three hours by bus leaving at midnight – this time we missed the 04:00AM bus and had to wait until 05:00AM for the next one. Coming straight from work, I was groggy from having not slept and with the bus doing long stops, it wasn’t a very pleasant ride. It was a busy season seven months ago when we went camping at Anawangin so this time we were hoping that we’d have our ‘peace and quiet’ in another remote cove, Nagsasa. Unlike Anawangin which is just about 30 minutes boat ride from the Pundaquit beach, Nagsasa Cove is one and a half hours away. Though ... read more
