Tickled Pink

Louise Edmonds

As I quickly approach my 26th birthday I have decided that now is the time to see a bit more of the world while I can still qualify for a youth travel card! So, I have recently left my job in London and booked a one way ticket to Australia with the aim of travelling until my money runs out!

I like to talk...lots, enjoy dancing round my handbag a bit too much and love anything pink!

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Karratha December 12th 2009

It's been nearly 3 months since my last blog, so I thought it was about time for an update.... Following our roadtrip I had a one day stop over in Perth before I repacked my bags and started the next chapter of my adventure. This time my destination wasn't a beautiful beach location or a popular tourist spot; I was flying to the busy mining town of Karratha to begin 10 weeks of work in beautiful MacDonalds.... My first impression of Karratha was not great. Infact, I had such a horrendous first day that I would have happily got on the next plane out of there. I had started the day with such optimism; I was looking forward to going to a new place, meeting new people, and even starting to have a routine again after ... read more

Our final destination on the roadtrip was Cervantes, however we made a slight detour on the way to visit the Hutt River Province. I came across the Hutt River Province in my guide book (Backpackers Ultimate Guide - highly recommended) and up until that point I had never heard of it. The Hutt River Province is a really interesting place to visit, not only because it is considered an independent country within Australia (you can get your passport stamped on entry) but also because of the people that live there. The Hutt River Province seceeded itself from the Australian Commonwealth in 1970 and claimed independent sovereignity. As you enter you are met by "His Royal Highness Prince Leonard I" who is more than happy to give you a guided tour of the Province including the Government ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalbarri September 22nd 2009

After a relaxing couple of days in Coral Bay and Exmouth we got onto the highway and began to head back down south. Wednesday was our longest driving day and the drive back down wasn't as exciting as the trip up as we were on the same road so were just passing places that we had already been to. One place we did stop at though which we had missed on the way up was the Tropic of Capricorn. There was nothing exciting there except a sign letting us know we had crossed it, but of course this provided another photo opportunity. After 7.5 hours we arrived in Kalbarri, whose tourism strapline is "Kalbarri - you'll love it". As it happens, this proved to be true. For a town that is only 50 or so years ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Coral Bay September 19th 2009

Day Four of our roadtrip was a long day as we drove further North to Coral Bay. We decided to break up the driving with a stop in Carnarvon which is a small town halfway between Denham and Coral Bay. We took the tourist drive into Carnarvon which had us driving past orchards and banana groves as we wound our way into the town centre. We didn't spend much time in Carnarvon, just long enough to walk down to the shore which is also the mouth of the Gascoyne River and cross part of the old steam train tracks which used to run from the town out to the Jetty. Back on the road we continued up to Coral Bay passing an unbelievable amount of road kill on the way. There were so many dead kangaroos, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Denham September 18th 2009

On our third day of roadtrip we decided to stop in Denham, which is only half an hour down the road from Monkey Mia. Our thinking was that I'd be able to have a day off from driving and when we left on day four we would be closer to getting back onto the Great North Western Highway. Denham is the main town in Shark Bay, but it is very small, and pretty much all along one stretch of road. There wasn't really much to do in Denham itself so we headed out for the day to various lookout points and places of interest in the area. Our first stop was Hamelin Pool, which is a marine nature reserve and is one of the few places in the world where you can see living Stromatolites. It ... read more

Day 2 of our roadtrip had us driving up to Monkey Mia which is a small tourist resort in the Shark Bay Marine Park famous for the daily feeding of bottlenose dolphins. As we began our drive North of Geraldton we began to notice the difference in our surroundings. The wildflowers that we had been driving through the day before were beginning to thin out and were replaced by the great Australian bush. We were also beginning to drive for longer distances without passing another person on the road; at some points the road stretched out for miles ahead of us without another single vehicle on it. The temperature had also begun to change; we had finally left the grey skies of Perth behind and were driving into beautiful sunshine...and heat. On the long stretches we ... read more

Hi All! We've just got back from our 10 day "Wicked" roadtrip up to Exmouth and back so I have lots to write about today but I'm going to split our trip into several blogs rather than one very loooonnnnggg one. We had decided to hire a "wicked campervan" for our trip as we'd thought it would be a pretty cool and cheap way of covering a vast expanse of Western Australia in a short space of time. For those of you that don't know, wicked campers are basically old banger vans converted so that they have a bed, sink and work top in them, and each van has a different paint design. Having seen loads of photos of different vans we weren't really expecting much when it came to picking ours up early Wednesday morning. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Broome August 13th 2009

I've just got back from 6 incredible days in Broome so I've got lots to write about today. We arrived in Broome on Thursday and the first thing we noticed as we stepped off the plane was the change in temperature. Having come from a wet and windy Perth the average temperature of 30 degrees in Broome was very much welcomed and gave me the opportunity to crack out my summer clothes for the first time since being in Oz! Broome is completely different to Perth (for a start there are no traffic lights?!) but exactly how I envisaged Australia to be. It's a small, laid back place, with beautiful weather, pristine beaches and lots of dusty red earth! I definitely felt like I was on holiday here. Our first day was spent getting our bearings ... read more

Another quick update today about the last couple of days. The weather over the last week has been gorgous so we've been to a couple of new beaches. I've even managed to crack out the shorts and t-shirt and start on my tan (although its more pink than brown at the moment)! On Thursday we planned to take a ferry to Penguin Island but unfortunately we weren't allowed over as the penguins are in mating season. So instead we decided to walk to Rockingham which is a tourist location further up the coast. The walk to Rockingham was lovely; pristine beach and turquoise water with hardly anyone else around. However as we came round the bay to Rockingham itself I wasn't overly impressed. While the beach was still nice, and the water was clear (unlike the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Perth July 16th 2009

It's been a while since my last blog as we haven't really been up to much touristy. The weather hasn't been too great so we've been trying to dodge the rain and on the good days we've tried to go somewhere new. We spent an afternoon driving around the Avon Valley which is a real picturesque region to the east of Perth. The area is named after the Avon river in the UK, although here they pronounce it Av-on (instead of A-von). Some of the views are stunning as you can look out over the valley and the rapids running through it. It was also the first time that I had seen the red dusty earth that Australia is famous for. Unfortunately my photos didn't come out very well and just don't do the area any ... read more
