Up early, packed up the few things we unpacked, showered, made eggs & toast (provided by the hostel, always appreciated), stowed our bags in a closet & off to see the town. Medellin is the only city in Colombia with a metro, so we were pretty excited to ride on it. It's the only city we've been in since we started traveling that had a metro. Our first stop was the "MetroCable" which is basically a gondola that services all the people who live up in the mountains surrounding the city (which are still a part of the city as well). The ride is included in the price of the metro ride so we went to the top looked out over the city, got off at a couple places, snapped photos & headed back down. It ... read more

We decided to leave today & head inland for a day & then back to the Caribbean. So, we're up early to catch the 7:30 am boat. Our morning was a little hectic due to money. We hadn't paid the dive shop yet because we didn't have enough Pesos to pay them, only dollars. So, we asked Ariel to change a couple hundred dollars for us to get us to Medellin & pay our debts. It took him up until the very last minute to come up with the pesos for us. So, it was a bit stressful at our departure time but Ariel gave us a fruit smoothie so we wouldn't leave town hungry. So kind. When the boat was loading up Geoff was running to pay the dive shop, we're paying Ariel, we're watching ... read more

Rainy season is really punctual. Ever since May started it has rained every day. Not all day long but at least at some point. Last night it poured. It was sooo loud. Now I'm sitting outside looking at all the dark clouds, willing them to go away & give me some last bits of sun before we head home. It's still warm of course & muggy & I'm wearing a sundress so I can't really complain. The sun is still super hot when it does come out so that's nice. It's interesting because their summer is really just a couple months long. It rained a lot in January & was kind of cold & now it's already raining in May. I have always imagined the Caribbean as hot & sunny all year long. Silly me. This ... read more

All I can say is Wow! It was roasty toasty last night. I woke up so many times drenched in sweat. It's super muggy & there isn't the slightest breeze blowing into our room & the electricity goes on & off & when it's off, Wow! The fan doesn't work & the temperature in the room is probably 105. Seriously. Ugh. It was honestly one of the hottest nights of sleep yet & it's not really even too hot outside. Oh well! Free sauna. This morning we had a delicious breakfast here at our Hosepdaje. The owner is Ariel & he is super chatty & very sweet. His daughter, Maria Jose, is ridiculously adorable & sat with us at breakfast talking & talking. She's almost 3 & full of energy. A little firecracker for sure. Ariel ... read more

We slept for so long. It's actually quite comfortable sleeping in a hammock. We were up early, almost with the sun. We've decided to try & catch a cargo boat that goes from here to Puerto Obaldia. We were told they come through in the morning usually & accept passengers for a small fee. So, we packed up & headed to the main dock to wait. Well we waited & waited & waited. The waiting was actually interesting for most of the time because the dock is situated right next to the public telephones. There are two young girls who manage the phones & collect payment for them. People from the village would show up & then the phone would ring & it would be for them. Or they would place a call. Or the phone ... read more

I love this guy.

I woke up to the alarm going off, which it had been doing for several minutes. The next thing I heard is the cab driver telling the night guy my name. Crap. We went out & talked with taxi dude & he was totally ok with it all & said he'd come back later to get us. Whew. We went right back to sleep for another hour. Too early. We got up, got packed, & headed out to the airport. We're flying into a little town in the Kuna Yala called Mulatupo. We have no idea what we will find there but we will see. It's pretty well off the typical tourist path so it's kind of an adventure. At the airport we waited for over an hour for the flight. Delayed. One thing I do ... read more

I'm sitting on the patio at our hostel this morning & listening to this crazy guy (truly crazy) harrass a taxi driver about taking him to the airport. The only reason I noticed is because I heard the exact same conversation last night while sitting here. It's funny because the guy is dressed really nice & he looks normal. But apparently he only wants to go to the airport. The best part is he's a local guy but when he asks to go to the airport he says it with an accent like he's trying to speak English. It's really funny. He's in the cab drivers face & he's acting like he doesn't even hear mr. crazy. Finally, mr. crazy smiles a bunch & tells him something in really fast Spanish & walks away all happy. ... read more

Today I drank my usual numerous cups of coffee until Geoff woke up. Then we made some egg sandwiches & headed out to mail our last box home. Today was a very long day solely devoted to mailing that stupid box. Before we left we had to pack up all our stuff & move to the dorms for the night. Our room was reserved & we didn't mention that we were staying until this morning so we're S.O.L. & in the dorms tonight. Oh well! Hopefully tomorrow night they'll have a room for us. I booked our tickets to San Blas this morning. All on the phone. It always makes me a bit nervous conducting business all in Spanish on the phone. But I did it (the woman helping me did have to repeat things a ... read more

I woke up really early today. Someone walked down the stairs over our head with a roller suitcase & went bang bang bang down each step. It was around 5:30 am. Really thoughtful. I'm sure the entire hostel heard them. So, I'm up & typing & waiting for a more appropriate hour to go out & buy some coffee. At 7 I headed out & walked a bit. It's still a bit sketchy feeling at this time of day so I followed a couple of the police (there's tons of them in this area because the President's house is a few streets away, which you cannot walk within 3-4 blocks of) to a Fonda where I ordered a grande coffee that the guy served to me in a large styrofoam soup bowl. It made me laugh ... read more

Travel day. Woohoo (said with very little enthusiasm). I guess I shouldn't complain. There aren't very many of these days left for us. We'll be home before we know it. The countdown is on, 22 days to go. Yikes. We packed up & made a quick breakfast sandwich to start us off right. We caught our first bus in Santa Catalina at 7:15 am. My favorite passenger today was the guy who got on the bus with a chainsaw & gas. They just set the chainsaw down in the aisle & we smelled the gas until he got off the bus. Gotta love it. We arrived in Sona at 9:30 & were placed on a direct bus to Panama City. Perfect! We thought we'd have to go through Santiago. We had about 1.5 hours to wait ... read more
