The day started before dawn, at 7 am with the coach picking us up to go to Puerto Bandera, where our catamaran awaited us for a tour of the glaciers. It was a cold and blustery day, requiring us to wear thermals and several layers to feel warm. But at the end of the day, it was well worth it! As the boat headed into Lago Argentino, we were lucky enough to catch the sunrise, albeit timid, behind the clouds. Then to tease us, we spotted a few small icebergs, many of them beached on the rocks. Having never seen an iceberg before, I was quite impressed already. We arrived in El Calafate yesterday and left sunny and warm Buenos Aires behind for a few days. The plane ride was a bit turbulent but there was "no need to panic" as we were kindly informed by our captain. We landed on the tarmac and as soon as we set foot on the ground, Taruna and I thought that we would be blown away - El Viento Del Sur - that´s what the wind is called. It was also raining and quite cold - so it was a bit depressing (at least for me!), especially after Buenos Aires. The landscape reminds me of the Scottish Highlands, but El Calafate is so much more sparse and desolate, and the few trees that manage to grow here get an endless battering from the wind. Hola amigos y amigas Quick update from us below: Buenos dias de Buenos Aires. We have arrived safely and have spent the last couple of days taking in the sights and getting acclimatised to the environment. It was a bit disconcerting seeing most of the immigration employees wearing face masks on arrival. TJ told me that her fellow passengers were scrutinised for any sign of sneeze/runny nose! First impression: this is a great city, it has an Old Europe feel to it, a bit like Madrid, and it´s huge! Everyone speaks some English (better than my Spanish), which is immensely helpful and gives time to my brain to remember the words in Spanish.
