In a half awake stupor . . . We likely will not have internet access, at least none that will be reasonably priced, so I will post this to let you know we are leaving tomorrow morning very early for Santorini on Aegean Airlines, but thankfully the first day is all about lounging around the hotel's pool and private beach. Life will be hard, but we will figure out a way to persevere. Frankly, we really need a break from all of this vacationing. Really. Jennifer got a box of Leonidas chocolates, they are Belgian, yes, but they sell them all over Greece and are very good. Jennifer is happy, will let you know how long that box lasts. Now fully coherent . . . Wow, today has been a long day. We woke up at ... read more

Europe » Greece » Pelopennese » Kyparissia May 7th 2009

We just finished dinner at Goody's, a fast food knock-off next to the Holiday Inn here on Odos Attiki near the Athens Airport. The hotel is okay, they tried very hard to make it a Star Trek type of place, ugly from the exterior, the interior will be dated very soon. The Goody's place was okay. We drove a total of 950 kilometers over the last two days, about half of them coming today, at altitudes up to 1600 meters and torrential rain. I have had enough of driving for a while. The car, a Hyundai Accent, in the event I neglected to mention it struggled direly to hit the 130 km/h, about 80 MPH on the home stretch from Corinth to Athens. I neglected to mention we crashed early in Nafplio the day before which meant we did not get to enjoy as much of that city as we would have liked, it is clearly a place you could spend a few days in. We left Napflio at a bit of a leisurely time and headed out towards Sparta in a bit more of a back way which took us over the mountains rather than around them. A lot of hairpin turns but it wasn't horrible by any means. I have to admit that I initially mistook the exuberance of Greek drivers as meaning that anything goes so long as I was safe, plus I was foolish enough to think that the photo-controlled speed zones were not a real threat until I realized that when I saw the ... read more

A short break on Aetoma Hotel's computer here as since I had to reload Windows XP on the laptop it does not recognize WPA networks. So still no photos, sorry. On top of that the laptop charger was left in the Hilton Athens guestroom and we do not return there until the 9th. Corinth Not that big of a city, but when you have the kind of location it has on the narrow piece of land (isthmus) that leads to the entire Peloponnesian Peninsula, you are going to end up having a disproportionately large reputation. We only saw the suburbs as we went to visit the famous Canal of Corinth that was built in 1883 and is about 6 kilometers long connecting the Saronic Gulf to the Aegean Sea. It would otherwise be about 425 miles ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens May 4th 2009

We got up at a reasonable time this morning, around 8:30AM but I ended up wrestling with the internet connection I am stealing from some building across the street for about an hour after we had breakfast in the lounge so we didn't leave the hotel until around 11AM which worked out fine. We basically hit all of the spots we had hit the night before and then some. Athens: The Basics Since the guard last night said "7 to 7" for the Acropolis we headed straight there to make sure we didn't miss out on anything. There are a lot of tourists, especially French but you don't feel overwhelmed here like you can in other tourist destinations. We keep seeing tour buses but I am not sure where all of the people are. Maybe its ... read more

They Crack Smiles We were told by our very friendly Northwest flight attendant that the KLM stewardesses are very professional but would "not crack a smile," we found that this was not the case but that the airline is definitely stale, there is something unappealing and archaic about the color schemes of those KLM airplanes. Arrving at the Athens Eleftherios Airport was about the easiest international arrival we have ever experienced, it is not that big of an airport but more importantly there is absolutely no passport control which is shocking when you think about it. It makes you wonder what they already have in the country if they're not so worried about what might come in. We took a taxi to the Athens Hilton, 28 Euro with tip, our lady was doing 130 km/h in ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam May 2nd 2009

We arrived an hour ahead of schedule, 5AM local time due to a very strong tailwind on our A330-300. We didn't get our upgrade to World Business Class but the seats I had gotten for us were as good as you could get and had about 7 feet of legroom since we were next to the main cabin door. Everytime we went to the bathroom and saw the rest of the cabin, or reclined our seats, we remembered how miserable those other people had it and we thankfully did not. One thing that could be improved was the food, it was absolutely lousy and barely edible. It has gotten so bad they should really offer to sell you better food. Possibly the Worst City in Europe Not having seen all of them, we have to be ... read more

North America » United States » Michigan » Detroit May 2nd 2009

Here we go again, see the attached map for a more detailed route guide for the next 14 days. We are in Detroit Airport for a 7 hour layover (there are worse airports we could be at). No upgrades on first leg, Northwest has really been disgruntled since the Delta acquisition, very unfortunate for them and for us as a result. Will work magic on the Detroit Amsterdam leg. We had a bit of hummus and some cocktails just now in anticipation of the real thing in Turkey. No photos until we reach Athens, but the restaurant manager got a shot of us in the Mediterranean Grill which we will post.... read more

This one is a little late coming but thanks to Chris and Barbara for sending out the pictures, so now at least there is something to post. Since it was Jennifer's birthday and C/B live close to the airport in Hollywood. Since we are heading up to a still cold Ohio I wanted to do something on the waterfront so we, Barbara and I, ended up on Nikki Marina at the Westin Diplomat. The whole thing was a surprise for Jennifer but she kind of figured it out when Chris spilled the beans in the morning, which was expected since I hadn't made it clear that it was a surprise for Jennifer. Plus, there is such a thing as doing too many surprises. The whole point of a surprise is for the surprise itself to be ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas » Nassau April 5th 2009

Nassau is not like I remembered it in 1991, but then I guess that is because a lot of time has passed. Paradise Island The action is no longer in downtown Nassau that is rundown and just plain stinky, it is all in Paradise Island. Nassau is good for what the rest of the Bahamas are for when not on the beach - island culture and colonial cityscapes. On Paradise Island, you go to Atlantis . . . all $1.8 billion of it (so far). We first tried to make a day of it in downtown Nassau, but soon decided to take a water taxi to Paradise Island. Beyond the rich and famous’ houses, Atlantis is is definitely a cool resort, very Disney-esque in its scale and attention to detail. Or maybe Las Vegas-esque since there ... read more
