From Chamonix we drove back to Paris to drop the car back at the rental spot. The trek back through Paris was significantly more difficult and stressful than the drive out of the city...to say the least.  We took the train from Paris to Milan, a trip originally planned in an overnight car, but ended up being an evening trip leaving us with no overnight plans in Milano. We had to try a few different hotels before finding one with vacancy for the night, but eventually ran into some luck and crashed in a beautiful 4 star hotel. We hopped a train to Cinque Terre the next morning, arriving in Riomaggoire mid afternoon. It took some labored exploration to find our apartment rental, but we eventually found it tucked back in a pedestrian street...very old Italian ... read more

What a day! We started with a climb of 4800m up the face of Mont Blanc in the sunrise. It took 3 gondolas to get to the top, including one of Rick Steves' "Wow!" trips for a phenomenal view. Rugged mountain peaks, a surround of glaciers, 6° weather and a glorious sunrise prior to crowds. We were clearly on top of the world! As scheduled, we met up with our "pilots" for our paragliding experience...it was everything we had imagined and much more! Eddie and Jerome had already done their first flight of the day and were ready to roll for the second. Both were quite experienced, reassuring and had a great sense of humour!! With an office view like theirs you would wonder what they did to get their adrenaline pumping!! We started at 2000m ... read more

Hello again!!! All this WiFi availability will leave you all tired of the updates I'm sure!!! Just a quick note for today, more to come on the rest of southern France!! (I know some of you are die hard subscribers, but all good things in time!!) We are currently in the french alpes...Mont Blanc to be exact. The drive here was phenomenal!! The mountains are gorgeous, and even as far as 150km away from our destination, colourful parachutes could be seen scattered across the sky line. For the most part, the crabby city slickers are gone, and with them the ill mannered children, loud music, honking horns and funky smells!! Everyone here is so down to earth and full of life!! It makes one want to...jump off a mountain?! Wait, that doesn't seem right!! Haha! However, ... read more

Myth #1: Although hookas line the windows in the stores of Amsterdam, the smell of marijuana is more prevalent in Canada. Myth #2: Red light districts appear on maps within Benelux, but there was more visible prostitution in Arles than Amsterdam. Myth #3: As dressy as you may think south France is, pants (and underwear) are apparently not a requirement. Myth #4: Monetary Responsibilities on toll routes do not end after you pay the toll...there will be another. And another. And an... Myth #4: Being up to tour a small town by 7am does not mean the pubs will be closed...the old boys will still be going at it! Myth #5: The presence of a packpack does not eliminate the ability to demonstrate French fashion...running shoes can accent any line of fashion. But the knee high ... read more

Europe July 18th 2010

So the immediate end results for our cross France trek left much to be desired. Let's just say the nights accommodations were unexpectedly short and not so sweet. Arles was revoked from our must see list. Our early morning tour of Orange restored our confidence in just how quaint and beautiful a European town can be. We saw and explored an ancient Roman colosseum/theatre which was overlooked by the emperors statue. FYI, the statues built for emperors were constructed with interchangeable heads to accommodate the constant changes in government. Some wonderful shopping, which was randomly interrupted by a man (part of some group wearing matching shirts and hats) who seemed to have forgotten his pants. Apparently "commando" is legit here. On to Avignon. A huge beautiful walled city, encompassing an old Roman town, palace and church ... read more

Blog 3 After cancelled trains and delayed replacements requiring reservations (already booked up of course), we finally got ourselves situated on a train to Paris. Settled in to a comfy seat on a high speed train we got my iPod touch out to post an update on our blog- WiFi on these fancy shmancy trains y'know! Alas, the fancy shmancy was temporarily out of order...no such luck for an update! So with much of the day lost to travel we finally arrived to Paris central station. Imagine what would happen if you mashed the Pearson airport with the Yorkdale mall and took away all signs leading to anywhere helpful...we looked like mice in a maze with no scent to follow. Apparently that came off quite clearly, as the nicest woman in Paris offered not only to ... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges July 12th 2010

After two train cancellations on Sunday our backpacks grew heavy. Upon arrival into Brugges things started to look up. This town is GORGEOUS!! we did some exploring on foot and then jumped on a boat to tour the canals in the company of a dry humor comedian/guide. With 17 churches and more bridges than we could count we were blown away by all the 13th century medieval architecture. The oldest bridge was built in the 1200's and the newest in the 1700's...which is warmly refered to as the ugliest bridge in town. Beautiful cobblestone streets are very narrow here making walking and cycling tricky... Not as crazy as Amsterdam though! Carefully maintained ancient gothic buildings and quaint cafes rule the streets here. We came home in time to dress is our neon orange boa's, a Holland ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Haarlem July 10th 2010

Hello everyone, good morning! Sorry about the delay in our first post...experiencing technical difficulties with the wifi on my iPod :( However!! We arrived to Amsterdam just before 7am local time (1am for us) on the 8th with less than an hour sleep on the plane for the night. From the airport we were overwhelmed by the number of locals who were eager and friendly in helping us in the right direction. We jumped a train, and found ourselves wandering the streets of Amsterdam while we waited for the locals to get out of bed and get us some bikes!! We found a small local bike rental (we'll have to send Rick Steves a message about his current recommended rental spot!) and we were on our way to explore the city. Maps on hand, we were ... read more
