Five fab days on the Dampier Peninsular. After two days in Broome we headed to Middle Lagoon for a night, then on to Kooljaman Resort (Cape Leveque) for four nights. Unfortunately our camper battery (number four in the last five years) died on us, so we had to turn the Waeco into an esky, but that kept the beer and wine cold, and that was all that mattered. Our stay included a flight over the Buccaneer Archipelago and Horizontal Falls, but because it was neap tides, the falls were not flowing.... read more

Split-arse journey from Onslow to Broome. Left Onslow at 5:40pm Monday (not far ahead of the sunset) and blasted through to Karratha where I had to stop and clean the bugs off the windscreen. Had intended to make it past Port Hedland (550km) before stopping, which would have put me about halfway to Broome, but the hoppers (kangaroos) and cattle were too thick both on and to the sides of the road. Pulled in after Yule River (about 40km short of Hedland) for the night at 11:40pm (after five hours at the wheel) and then pushed off again at 5:45am and drove the remaining 6.5 hours to Broome, arriving at 12:15pm. From about Pardoo onwards the south-easterly picked up and had reached about 30 knots by the time I got to Broome. (Sucked the fuel gauge ... read more

After 1,469km I arrived in Onslow around midday, having done the inland route with dirt roads all the way from Mullewa to Onslow (over 1,000km). Good trip, but still a bit warm to linger at the Kennedy Ranges, where I had intended to stop overnight last night. Temp was still 43C and I abandoned the escarpment walk after 30 min because it was too hot (and risky) to do on my own, even with a 2ltr hydration pack. Nobody in the park - campground empty - so kept going and camped near a wind pump to get some star trail and moonrise photos (and some of the local wildlife coming in to drink.) New suspension worked well - got the car airborne twice over washaways and Mephisto took it in his stride! After travelling more than ... read more

The first stage of the Perth to Purnululu trip begins on Friday. Weather and road conditions permitting, the three-day, 1400km journey to Onslow, more than 1,000km of it on dirt roads, will take the inland route via Mullewa, Murchison, Gascoyne Junction, Lyndon and Twitchen roads.... read more

On Friday (Apr 22) Mike and Mephisto (our trusty Land Cruiser) depart Perth for Onslow, the springboard location for this trip. After working his two-week swing in Onslow, Mike and Mephisto will blast off on an overnighter to Broome to meet Fi and begin the trip in earnest. For those interested, Mephisto is named after a World War One German tank, captured by the Australians and now resident in Queensland. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mephisto_(tank)... read more
