This morning both Gry and I woke feeling the effects of yet another two bottles of wine only hours before awaking. That didn't stop the two of us though! We were up and off to see the Spanish steps. On our agenda was to find a place for brunch somewhere between the Spanish steps and the Vatican as that was next on our things to do today. We walked to the steps taking in all of Roma. After seeing the Spanish steps both Gry and I were feeling a little disappointed in the lack of grandeur that the steps presented. This may have been due to the construction happening at the foot of the stairs where the fountain lies. From the steps, we found a number of cafés close to the metro where we could have ... read more

Woke to Gry saying it,was 7:30am. Well we had only just gone to sleep at 3:30 so I wasn't sure what the panic was but ok, I fell back to sleep :) she tells me with my head in my hands. Once awake we showered and headed out Leaving breakfast at the hotel there. our first stop was about 400 meters from our hotel which was the ruins of where Julius Caesar was stabbed. Pictures attached. Caesar was stabbed to death by a group of rival Roman senators on March 15, 44 B.C, the Ides of March. The assassination is well-covered in classical texts, but until now, researchers had no archaeological evidence of the place where it happened. Now, archaeologists have unearthed a concrete structure nearly 10 feet wide and 6.5 feet tall (3 meters by ... read more

We woke this mornig in a bit of a rush to get showered, down to breakfast and to the Vatican by noon. Break was something to be desired from dried up sausage to stale breads. Not exactly what we were hoping for but what the heck, we were in Roma! We ate a little (I had oatmeal and yogurt mixed, pretty safe) then packed up to change rooms. We headed out a purchased tickets for the hop on hop off bus that was suggested to us by the reception at our hotel. With little time to take in the streets, we searched for the pick up location for the Hop On bus but had little lick so we hopped on a public bus. We had. O idea what we were doing and no idea who we ... read more

Today we leave for Roma but not until later in the afternoon so we have time for some visiting and touring Norway. After breakfast, Gry and I packed we moved slowly then got ready to go into Honefoss. Andy drove me around showing me his school, and several of the homes he lived in. We stopped by one of his neighboros on what He tells me is called "Andy Hill" after he introduced us, she took one look at us and said, "I see the resemblance, you look the same" of course in Norweigan. After that, we went to Oslo where Andy dropped Gry and I off so we could get on our way.... read more

What a beautiful morning! The sun was shining and it was warm enough to sit outside in our bathing suits. We began our morning with the typical Norwegian breakfast. I am eating far more bread then usual but my favourite part would be everyone eating at the table together. The food itself is incidental but the visiting makes the morning beautiful. After breakfast, we spent some time enjoying the sunshine. We then had to take Thea and Berit to meet with Thea's dad. It was a beautiful drive as i watched the country side recognizing places we had passed in the previous days. After dropping the two girls at the location, we drove to a grocery store to pick up items for lunch then headed out for quite a long drive to look at a boat ... read more

I woke this morning with only a few hours sleep but feeling great. Went down to the cottage and got a coffee. Gry and I got breakfast ready. I tried caviar on my bread but did to care for it. Some of the items available for the open faced breakfast sandwich included a number of cheeses, horse meat, salami, caviar, chocolate spread and tomatoes. I actually quite like the meals and the fashion I which they are served. After changing, we got ready to go for a drive to a Stave church. first stop was to pick up Thea who just passed her drivers test. We then drove for some time and stopped at a grocery store to purchase food lunch. We then traveled to the Stave church (see map) The stave church (see pictures) was ... read more

Woke this morning to Gry telling me she was off to the hospital to be checked and wondered if I was also wanting to go. I got out of bed and did some moving to assess the situation and didn't feeling it was necessary So I stayed behind, I got up and went down to the main cottage where I made a coffee, wrote in my blog and had some fresh bread and cheese. A little tidying up, emptied the dishwasher and I was ready to do Thea's hair. Gry and I went into Honefoss to do some shopping. It was a great town. We went to the mall and looked at clothes then did a little walk through town which has cobble stone streets. We went to the grocery store where I picked out items ... read more

I woke to beautiful sunshine coming through my window and he sounds of horses playing in the near by yard. They were frisky on this morning. I sat on the bench swing as I watched the fog come over the mountains while drinking my coffee. It was a peaceful moment to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Andy joined me then we went and watered the horses. What a lovely morning to spend with my brother! . I laughed as I watched two of horses bite one another in play like two children fighting for attention. Soon, everyone was awake and breakfast was on it's way. We enjoyed a lovely meal of scrambled eggs, bacon, bread, apple juice (or coke) and a number of cheese spreads. The fantastic solid wood kitchen table accommodated the 6 of us comfortably ... read more

Europe » Norway » Eastern Norway » Oslo July 28th 2014

i landed in Norway and my phone immediately buzzed. "Welcome to Norway" says the text from Andy. Whoot whoot! I am finally here! I get off the plane, go directly to duty free and get wine and beer and head down to get my luggage. No customs no anything! Just straight out the door where Andy greets me. Quick hug and we are out to the car. It was much hotter then I anticipated! Andy and I drove to Oslo. I took in the beautiful country side, and observed the different signs along the road. We passed a harbour when we saw a huge cruise boat that does the Denmark cruise lines. I don't recall ever seeing a ship of that size. we stopped at a boat store to purchase a propellor for the his new ... read more

Stuffed in like sardines, just enough space for one to breath! And turn to thy neighbour! This is what it is like on a plane flying economy! Take off was on time. I got a window seat and was quite happy to look out as we took off and landed. For the most part we were flying across the Atlantic Ocean and not much to see. During the flight from Toronto to Germany, dinner was served (chicken, mashed potatoes and a bun) along with complimentary drinks (I had 2 glasses of white wine then a baileys after dinner to help me sleep) for the duration of the flight. I watched two movies, a couple of sit coms and attempted to sleep on a number of occasions with little success. Probably i was very excited for my ... read more
