I'm currently on my final night here on Shikoku Island. I ended the day soaking in the very renowned hot spring onsen, Dogo-Onsen. This is the oldest one in Japan, about 3000 years old. The structure now was recently built but it's done in the traditional style, very tastefully done. It's got about 6 actual bath areas spread over three floors, not including the private bath for the Emperor and his family (although no Emperor has been here since about 1951). I took the most expensive option, about $13, which includes a tour of the facility, the bath itself, and a chance to relax in a private room overlooking the area below, sipping on green tea and sweets. The bath area is a stone, and the waters have minerals in them said to cure diseases (of ... read more

Well this part of my adventure is now complete... Yesterday I woke up and had an amazing Japanese Breakfast at this hotel. Everything from a poached egg to mandarain oranges and miso soup. After that drove around and checked out the valley. Iya Valley was very very impressive. If mist covered mountains, vine bridges, and tons of greenery sounds good to you, you'd love it here. Felt very exotic, minus the well paved roads. The area has quite a number of small villages sprinkled throughout it, with the shops, homes, and schools built literaly into the side of the mountain. Many of them are built on platforms sticking out of the side, living here must be a very unique experience. In the morning I checked out one of the famous Iya vine bridges. It wasn't quite ... read more

WOOOOOOOOOkaaayyy... where oh where to begin. First off a warning, this post is huge as the day was probably the most remarkable day I've ever had here in Japan. Most of the pics of Iya itself is in the next post which I'll make tomorrow, it's getting far too late here. I guess last night would be a good start, well, the night before I left here since people probably won't read this for a few days, not exactly a lot of Internet cafe's here in the middle of nowhere. I had no luck sleeping last night... think I finally did about 2:30am. Kept playing over what I would do in the morning, the drive, the possible issues i could run into, everything. Which really messed me up for the actual day. I slept in (a ... read more

I'm writing this from a regular train the Marine Liner 35, in the Green (or First Class) car. Not sure how I got put in first class but I'm not complaining. All it really means is nicer seats, but even regular isn't that bad. It's also a double decker car with me on the lower level which is kinda neat. Heading towards Shikoku Island. I spent yesterday chillin out in Kyoto, a city renowned for it's history and geisha quarters. I set out to see two places here. The first is a museum, however in it's previous life it was the Sumiya Pleasure House, which is as bad as it sounds. During it's peak during the Edo period (1600-1867) this area flourished with over 20 enormous ageya's or "floating world" halls. Here artists, writers, and statesmen ... read more

Pretty exhuasted at the moment, so hopefully this entry won:t be too random today... Been walking around Kyoto today, going to check out the older part of the city tonight, maybe catch a Geisha sighting or two.. Nara is both one of the more beautiful cities in Japan I've visited, as well as the friendliest. The train to Nara is a pretty small line.. .at times only one track so the other train needs to wait. met a professor from Korea here, very nice guy he's doing work at the Kyoto University for a year. Also ran into another guy, this time from Toronto, he:s here for a bit visiting his sister. Finally ran into a girl from Japan itself who spoke really good English, she was in the UK for a couple of years doing ... read more

Part three of my postings on Matsumoto. I've taken the non castle pics and compiled them in here. Met a number of other travelers here, including a younger couple from Spain at the Ryokan. Their English was passable. Besides the castle I also stopped off in their small museum which I have a few pictures of and other various little stops in the city like Nacamachi Avenue. This is an older merchant district now converted into restaurants and shops, a very picturesque area. Walking around the city was always an adventure, other then the main streets, there really isn't any places to walk on the road other then right on the road. And when the road itself is a two way barely wide enough for a one way... it's exciting. Overall I really enjoyed my time ... read more

Yesterday was all about Matsumoto-jo (Jo meaning Castle). Matsumoto-jo was built in the early 1500s, making it older then the other castle I saw last trip, Himeji-jo. Himeji is about 10x larger, but this castle makes up for it in breathtaking splendor... which explains the over 100 pictures I ended up taking today lol. I've uploaded “the best” pics here for you to check it out. I accidentally hit a button on my camera that resulted in the ISO level going to max.. what that means in human terms is they're rather grainy, affected about half of the pics sadly. Going to be posting the other non castle pics from Matsumoto tomorrow. After I showed my ticket (half price thanks to the place I stayed) and got inside, I heard what sounded like a Hello. I ... read more

FIIIIIIIINALLY could upload this entry... flakey internet up here. Also got a video in this post of one of those whacking Japanese Game shows too.... ====== The minute you step off the train and hear the loud speakers exclaim "welcome to Ma-tsumo-tooooooh" you know your in for something a bit different. The ride up here is through some gorgeous mountainous terrain and takes you through Nagano, where they held the Olympics some years back. The city itself is a good mix of Cosmopolitan city life with even a Starbucks, and traditional Japanese architecture. The city's main attraction is Matsumoto-jo, one of Japan's four top castles. I got a lift to the Ryokan from the owner, which was nice since the Ryokan itself is a fair ways away from the train station. First time in a Japanese ... read more

Asia » Japan » Iwate » Morioka September 21st 2008

I'm writing this from about 100m below the bottom of the sea separating Hokkaido and Honshu. Today's just a pure travel day, my next real destination is Matsumoto, near Nagano. Yesterday was a nothing day, didn't sleep well the night before, the pictures below were taken the previous nights. Last night was stuck in the same dorm room as a snorer so again not much rest... stopping tonight in Morioka going to try checking in to a real hotel just so I can have a good nights rest, but failing that there's a rather nice capsule inn right by the station... somewhere I think. Morioka's a pretty cool little city stayed here a few nights my last trip. Didn't book my tickets for this ahead of time so stuck in the non reserved area of the ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » Otaru September 20th 2008

Whoops forgot to hit Publish on this yesturday... was pretty outa it when I wrote this due to lack of sleep: ===== So todays my final day on the island of Hokkaido. Yesterday visited the Sapporo Beer museum as well as the city of Otaru. The Sapporo Beer museum was smaller then I pictured it, but not too bad. Most of the signage was in Japanese but I got the gist of it. My favorite bit was these little models they had setup that made it look like beer came from a Santas workshop type atmosphere. Made me chuckle and reminded me of the Simpsons episode where they go to the Duff Brewery theme park. The tastings they had were relatively cheap, and the actual grounds was very nice. Some pretty cool restaurants, went to one ... read more
