..and what a great year 2011 is shaping up to be for us. Today has been spent tying up all the loose ends - well that is true for Andrew who tends to wait until the last minute to do things, but since I already took care of all that stuff weeks ago in an organized fashion, I have been trying to busy myself with other stuff... running, laundry, pacing about and trying to make time go by faster. All so typical. We will be headed to the airport in just about 4 hours flying first to LAX then on to Brisbane. Have a toast for us at midnight as we will likely be on the tarmac or possibly just taking off. We will be arriving in Australia about the same time most of you will ... read more

Packing up the contents of the apartment. Getting ready to move it all to storage on Tuesday. Very excited to be leaving all of the real world worries behind for a while. We have a basic idea of where we are headed and are departing with a one way plane ticket to Brisbane on Friday 12/31 - other than that the next 10-11 months are all about fun and adventure so long as the money does not run out.... read more

So this is the last full day of exploring in India. You might ask, well what are we doing on the internet in that case - well it is monsoon and one place the monsoon is a true monsoon is Mumbai. Pouring, flooding rain from morning to night, so a small interlude in an internet cafe is not such a bad thing. We left off in Jaipur with stomach ailments ... From there we headed to Jodhpur - the "blue city." Neither one of us were all too excited about Jodhpur. Well we were unable to book a train trip out and I got in a couple of "discussions" with the man who owned our guesthouse. So Jodhpur was interesting because most of the buildings within the old city walls are painted a bright blue. Looks ... read more

India just wouldn't be India without stomach issues. So now that we're back we've decided to throw-up a few times, have 'interesting' trips to the bathroom, and become totally repulsed whenever we catch sights of a 'Dosa'. Otherwise.... Delhi was an interesting stop on our little journey through India. We assumed, being the capital, it would be the center of Indian culture and therefore crazy and hectic like no other place on earth. Our suspicions were confirmed once we stepped off the train in New Delhi. Like a moving ocean, full of peaks and ripples, people moved everywhere. Once outside the station things didn't change. The street, or clearing of mud, was packed with vendors hawking anything from shoes to samosas. Busy travelers moved about, keeping one eye on their feet (you don't want to step ... read more

Just spent about 30 minutes typing when the browser disappeared. So this is going to be shorter and sweeter than intended. We are now in Delhi. Back in hot, sticky, down and dirty India. But ... about a week ago we finally left Kathmandu after the national transport strike had ended. We caught the first bus to Dumre and from there walked/rode the back of a tractor full of gravel to the mountain village of Bandipur. Bandipur was beautiful. Really beautiful and the people extremely friendly and welcoming. We filled two days there with walks and short hikes and an excursion into the largest cave in all of Nepal. We were a little sad to leave, but time to move on. Next stop was Pokhara. We got out of that little tourist trap pf a town ... read more

Not quite sure what all the fuss is about. Climb 29,000 feet sure, we did it three times. Well in my dreams. So we had an amazing last 11 days trekking in the Himalayas. Had a few set backs, but it was yeah amazing. We flew in to the town/village of Lukla on a 19 seater "Twin Otter" propeller plane(quite an interestingly steep and short runway) on the 11th of June. From there we had a small breakfast and started walking. We continued walking until the afternoon of the 21st when we decided to sit and return back to Kathmandu. The most beautiful views and vistas I have ever seen. Friendliest most welcoming people and some very delicious meals of daal bhat. Daal Bhat is what the Nepali people in most cases eat two times a ... read more

So there was a slight delay in departure from India - as a dear friend put it - "seems a bacteria decided to start a live-free colony in my intestines." We ended up leaving India a day later than planned and after 32 hours of travel arrived in Kathmandu for a long awaited breath of fresh air. Disclaimer - India was wonderful and can not wait to go back and explore/learn some more, but there is something to be said for taking a break from the chaos. The first leg of the journey was a train ride from Varanasi to Gorakhpur, scheduled to leave at 1230 am, train actually arrived at around 230 am - in the mean time we waited on the floor with the thousands of other people and millions of astronomically huge crickets. ... read more

So we are currently in Varanasi. More on that later, this is the long route we took to get here. We ended up leaving Kolkata on a night train to the town of Gaya from where we could catch rickshaw to Bodhgaya (the city where Prince Siddartho reached enlightenment and became Buddha). Waited at the hot, balmy train station for hours after spending an afternoon walking around in the heat. There was no cooling down in the heat, so we found a spot on the floor near a crowded fan and began to wait for our night train that would be running late. Around 8pm we got a small snack and this is where the fun begins ... I had only one bite of this tasty Paneer Roll while Andrew ate the rest. As we found ... read more

Reflections of heat aside, we are finding Kolkatas more intimate side. We've walked where our books have suggested, we've strayed when we thought alleys looked interesting. We've eaten the food that is sure to make us sick and sweated through nights with no A/C. And we're loving it. Of all the places I've been, Al can speak for herself, this seems to be the most in your face 'real' I've ever encountered. Everything here seems chaotic, rushed, over the top sensory overload, but once you get past the horns, smog, crowds, yells and general mass of human consumption, you see simplicity. Everyone and everything here seems to be designed to do one thing. Food vendors make food, beggars beg, car honk, busses pollute, and on and on. The first taste is an all at once onslaught ... read more

Made it to Kolkata this morning. At 11am it was 40 degrees celcius. Yeah, hot. Could not find a bus and since neither Andrew nor I have slept well in about 48 hours we gave up and took a taxi. Now this is where I became thankful that I was sleep deprived and a bit delirious. Otherwise I may have been scared. I actually think the driver was trying to kill us because of the low fare we had agreed upon. Found a dirty hole in the wall to sleep in. Andrew decided he felt like throwing up so we both just sat in the room under the fan for about 1 1/2 hours. Lucky me when I took my shower and got out I noticed there was a man that could see in our windows ... read more
