We had a kind of scavenger hunt today. Veronica split us into groups and gave each of the groups something to find and get information about. All the things had to do with stuff to do in Granada, like where the theaters are, where you can take flamenco or salsa classes, or ours, find the office of tourism and get information on bus schedules for the coast and skiing, and schedules for monuments in Granada. Ours ended up being really easy because a girl in our group walked by the office on the way home every day, so we knew where it was. Courtney’s group had a harder time. They had to find the two theaters in Granada. One was up near the Alhambra and the other was on the other side of town. They didn’t ... read more

This weekend was nice and relaxing. Saturday we woke up to go shopping at 10. I would have preferred to go later, but since stores close at 2:00 for siesta, we started earlier. Spain had two big sale times, in January and February, and in August. Every store you walk by has “Rebajas!” (discounts) in the windows. Absolutely everything is marked down. I figure I should just get all my shopping done now then I won’t have to worry about it later. The streets were a lot more crowded than I’ve ever seen them. Of course, it was the weekend, but it was also such a beautiful day. I have started to notice signs that the weather is getting better. Restaurants are setting up their outdoor seating areas, and more people are walking around, and hanging ... read more

We finally got to sleep in today! Veronica split the groups for meetings today; group 2 didn’t have to be there until 11:30. She showed us the second CCA (Central College Abroad) office then talked to us about the different options for service learning. I’m still not sure what I’m going to be doing here. If I do the internship, I have to drop one of my classes that I’m signed up for, and I don’t want to do that. I already had to drop one as it is. I can only take five courses including my phonetics class and Granada seminar. I signed up for Spanish civilization and culture, Spanish literature, and Italian. I may end up just doing service learning like working at a soup kitchen or I could take some other classes like ... read more

Our excursion to the Albaycin today was difficult to wake up for, but well worth it. I wasn’t really sure what exactly the Albaycin was before we went; I thought maybe a monument or castle like the Alhambra. But I found out it’s just an area of Granada. We walked along the Rio Darro on the way to Plaza Nueva. The river is called Darro because it is similar to the old word for gold. Gold was in the Sierra Nevada and pieces of it would flow down with the river, so when the sun shined, the gold was reflected in the water. We walked to the Plaza Nueva where you can see up the mountain to the Alhambra which is a castle and fortress from the 9th century. It was hard to really see it ... read more

We finally got our calendars for the rest of the semester! Now I can start planning my trips. We’re going to be pretty busy though with everything. I’ll be taking five classes plus we have intercambio which is a monthly get together with a Spanish student learning English and we do activities together. Veronica has planned a bunch of cultural excursions like a wine and olive oil tasting and going to see flamenco. Then we have our trips to Sevilla and Madrid. I’m going to need to find people to travel with me though. The people I have met so far are all in Intensive Language which has class on Fridays, and I don’t, so it won’t be as easy to plan together. Plus Lengua y Cultura and Estudios Hispanicos has a whole extra week before ... read more

Another sunny day in Granada. If it gets cold again, I don’t think I’ll be able to deal with it. Especially since it’s still freezing in our apartment. My fingers, nose, and toes never get warm in this house. Except when we eat dinner. The living room is also the dining room, so there is a table in front of the couch and chairs. It has a blanket over it that goes to the ground with the tablecloth on top. When you sit down, you put the blanket over your legs and are basked in warmth because there is an electrical heater under the table, and the blanket holds the heat in. These are my favorite times at home. This is a very common thing for Spanish people to do. Now you may be thinking, fire ... read more

I had to take a shower last night, and I learned what it means to conserve water. Maria Luz told us to turn the water off when we don’t need it, so when we’re sudsing up, the water is off. We turn it on real quick to rinse off then turn it off again. Standing in a shower without hot water constantly on you is one of the worst things ever. Especially when there’s no heat in the house and it’s about 55 degrees inside. I am going to be taking showers as little as possible until it warms up. Maria had breakfast ready for us at 9:30 this morning—toasted bread with butter and jam—so we were ready to head to our first meeting at the Centro at 10:45. It’s not toast like we have at ... read more

Last night was freezing! They told us that it gets cold at night, but I was not prepared for it. My blankets were really thin, so I woke up in the middle of the night to put on socks, my sweatshirt, and lay my coat over my legs for an extra layer. ¡Qué horrible! We woke up at 9:00 to eat breakfast. There’s not much to say about it because it’s basically the same as a normal breakfast: we had toast, fruit, yogurt, and tea. They did have an assortment of various cold meats and what I assume was cheese. It’s very different from China, where everything was foreign. We were supposed to meet at the Hotel Melia at 12 for our orientation session and meeting our families, so we left at 11:30 to give us ... read more

It’s round two for study abroad, this time in Granada, Spain. I flew out Friday afternoon from Cedar Rapids to Dallas. I was a little worried about delays since it had been snowing the last two days, but everything worked out well and I made it to Dallas in plenty of time to catch my next flight. I had talked with two girls from Central (Emma and Amber) who were also going to Spain and had booked seats next to them. I didn’t know how many others were on the same flight, but when I got to the gate there were maybe twelve others from the group. That was helpful because I hadn’t really been in contact with anyone from the group besides Emma. (Over my short three week break between countries I wasn’t really feeling ... read more

I can’t believe it’s our last night. The last week has been crazy, hectic, and slightly stressful. It’s hard to even remember everything we did. We got our lasts all finished: last dancing, last KTV, went to a Chinese movie. By the way, the movie was called The Flowers of War, with Christian Bale, and about the Japanese attack on Nanjing. It was an incredible movie, but so difficult to watch. The plot centered on a group of young girls and their priest who was trying to protect them from the Japanese. I would recommend it but be warned, it is very disturbing. We had our final on Tuesday and I think I did pretty well. With that finished, I expected to be able to relax for the last week, but instead I was rushing around ... read more
