Much Better! Thursday 31 May Today I started private lessons and I’m managing much better. I have just a two-hour lesson each day now instead of four hours in class, but in the long run I still think I’ll be better off. Perhaps I would swap back to a classroom situation if/when I next come back to the school. At least that way I would already know the basics of the feminine, masculine, single, plural, verb to be, adjectives, adverbs, articles etc., etc., etc. Just a little note to anyone reading this who is thinking of attending IL SASSO: Try and learn the basics before you go as it’s a pretty fast-paced class!... read more

Bombed Out! Wednesday 30 May Halfway through lessons on day three; I bombed out. I was utterly discombobulated and on the verge of tears. I left the class and met with the manager of the school. I needed to find a solution. I decided to pay the extra money and swap over to all private lessons where the tutor would do explanations in English. After this meeting, I took the rest of the day off. I needed to clear my head and get some fresh air and sunshine. With all my spare time taken up with study, I hadn’t had time to update my travel blog or communicate with family. I took a long walk outside the walls of the village to try and find a shop in in the residential shopping area that might have ... read more

Who sets the pace? Tuesday 29 May By day two, the pace had been set. The five other students in the class had either studied Italian before, or spoke similar languages such as Spanish. So, despite my attempt to study, I wasn’t keeping up. They were much too quick for me! After class I made an appointment for a private lesson to see if I could catch up. This would take place after class on Wednesday, day three.... read more

Monday 28 May First Day of School – Italian Language Lessons At il Sasso Language School I opted for classroom lessons of just for 4 hours per day (8.45 – 1.15, including breaks). This seems to be the norm, although some students also take private lessons during the afternoon. It really depends why you want/need to learn the language (work requirement or pleasure) and how quickly you want/need to learn. I’m taking lessons so that I can learn enough to get myself out of trouble when I’m travelling, and to know enough to be able to read documents when researching family history. By the end of the first day my head was swimming. Unlike the way languages are taught in Australia, with explanations in English, the method for classroom teaching at this school is no, absolutely ... read more

Sunday 27 May Montepulchiano This morning I just lazed around my apartment reading and enjoying breakfast and the village views from my window. This afternoon I wandered around all the lovely shops just soaking up the atmosphere of this charming village. The streets here are very narrow and also very steep. I think the local people here must be very fit and have very strong legs. Montepulciano is a walled medieval village with cobblestone -streets and buildings with small windows with either bars or shutters. Some have beautiful window boxes with red geraniums or colourful petunias. Others have fabulous roses growing around their doorways. Being a walled village means it isn’t possible to drive through the streets without special permits and then you can only do so at certain hours. Most cars are required to park ... read more

Saturday 27 May An alarm clock start today… up at five to be at Milano Stazione Centrale for my 7.15 train to Montepulciano. (Pronounced; Mon tepull charno, with the accent on the ar). After a five-hour train journey, and another two hours spent with country busses and transfers, I arrived at my place of residence for the next two weeks. One of the Il Sasso teachers (I’m here to learn some Italian… well the basics at least) met me and took me to my apartment, right across the road from my school… literally 20 metres away. The apartment is in a very old building, but the interior has been modernised and has everything I need for a comfortable stay. This town is thousands of years old, but I’ll go into more detail later. I’m ... read more

Friday 25 May (cont’d) I got off to an early start, arriving at Milan State Archives at 8.30. The news was a bit disappointing, I was told I’d have to go to the Milan Municipal Archives as the State did not handle vital records ie, birth, deaths and marriages for the period I was searching. They only handle much earlier records, prior to 18th century and mostly records other than BDMs such as wills, probate, family histories etc. So, after more walking, steps and subways to reach the Municipal archives, the outlook appeared a little more hopeful. After registration, my belongings were placed in a locker and I was led into a reading room. These musty-smelling archive rooms are amazing; every wall is floor to ceiling chocked full of old books and records. I was seated ... read more

Friday 25 May I woke fairly refreshed… maybe a bit heady, but I have to say; thus far, I haven’t really had the jet lag that I’ve experienced on other long haul trips. Milan is known as one of the most expensive cities for accommodation in all of Italy, so I doubt I could’ve done better cost-wise for a B&B in central Milan. I paid just Euro 70 per night for a clean and adequate single room with an excellent breakfast. It’s 10pm now and I’ve run out of time to talk about my day in Milan. I’ll update tomorrow about how I went at the archives looking for family records. A 5am start tomorrow as the train leaves for Montepulciano at 7.15 in the morning. Must sleep now! I haven’t been able to publish any ... read more

Thursday 24 May The flight from Abu Dhabi to Milan was about 6 ½ hours. The Etihad service was excellent, especially compared to the trip between Australia and Abu Dhabi. Why? I don’t know, but this time I didn’t go hungry or thirsty. The crew were very attentive on this sector, they also appeared friendlier and more willing to assist guest requests. Maybe the ratio of staff to passengers was higher or maybe the crew were fresher. Regardless, apart from the quality and selection of food, I was much happier with the overall service on this leg. After walking up and down many, many steps to train and subway stations, and on and off transport, I arrived at Euro Hotel Milano around 4pm (11pm Australian time). I checked in, had a shower and went straight to ... read more

Well, here I sit looking out the window at Abu Dhabi airport. Looks just the same as Sydney or Melbourne... could be anywhere really. Looking out the window of the plane coming down though it was unmistakable that is wasn't just anywhere. Sand, sand and more sand. Oh and did I mention that there was a lot of sand. I decided not to do a stopover here; too anxious to get to Italy! Flight from Hobart was fast... flight from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi was slow! Seriously though, not too bad for a 14-hour flight. I think I slept for about three hours. Pretty good considering how cramped it was. The flight was absolutely full... not a spare seat to be had. I flew Etihad, the national carrier of the UAE. Food was pretty good, everything ... read more
