Seattle, plus Jane and Maya Tuesday August 25 In mid-afternoon Jane and Maya arrived from Corvallis. Knowing that there were no rooms the Mayflower Hotel they booked on Hotwire and luckily ended up at the Seattle Westin a three-minute walk away. We decided that for today’s activity we would take the monorail to the Seattle Center. This is a major park and activity complex, site of the 1962 World’s Fair Space Needle and now home to Paul Allen’s “EMP” Experience Music Project and “SFM” Science Fiction Museum. Wanting to enjoy dinner at the Space Needle’s rotating restaurant we had made reservations the day before. From the third floor of the Westlake Mall we boarded the monorail and enjoyed the ride over traffic to the park. Our first stop was the modern, spectacular looking EMP and SFM, ... read more

Seattle August 24 2009 Karen & Sylvan in Seattle This summer the major vacation for Karen and I was an unplanned trip across country to the Pacific Northwest, Washington State, Idaho and Montana. Actually this trip began last summer when we took a cruise to Alaska with Maya and Maxanne. Joining us on our trip was my sister Jane and her husband Billy from Oregon and my cousin Michael and his family, Mickie, Donnie and Rachael from Georgia. Michael had become a widower in late 2006. He decided joining us would be a great way for his children to connect with our daughters who they don't see that often. While on the Alaskan cruise Mike happened to meet a lovely woman, Debra a widowed elementary school teacher with three adult children from Moses Lake, Washington. In ... read more

Maine visit Odds & Ends The Bagaduce Lunch, Penobscot Narrows Observatory, and the Thomaston Café. No good vacation can happen without a few pictures, and odds & ends that needed a final mention. We finally left Deer Isle in the early afternoon and began our trip south towards home. Driving past the town of Penobscot on Route 175 we crossed the Bagaduce River Bridge and saw a scenic river crossing and the Bagaduce Lunch. For only the second time during the trip we were able to convince Karen to turn around and stop for lunch. What a great place for lunch! The Bagaduce Lunch serves great food at reasonable prices. I had a very large order of haddock “Fish and Chips” for $8.75 and all of our meals were equally outstanding. But that wasn’t the great ... read more

Nervous Nellie’s A short ride from the center of Deer Isle down Sunshine Road is an interesting emporium and sculptor park called Nervous Nellie’s Jams & Jellies, owned by Anne and Peter Beerit. It is located on an old farmstead, surrounded by gardens and set on the edge of the woods next to an old orchard. Nervous Nellie’s produces numerous small batch jellies and jams produced in the jelly kitchen on site. Peter Beerit’s folk art sculptures populate several acres of the grounds and surround the kitchen and sales cottage. Peter uses discarded items, junk and found objects to create whimsical sculptures and living spaces. The 10-foot tall pink flamingo and a village of the absurd welcome you as you enter the store. A pleasant café with an outside deck is attached to the store and ... read more

Ellsworth Maine, Woodlawn Museum On Thursday, we hit the road again and this time we headed east to Ellsworth on the northern edge of the peninsula. Yesterday, during our visit to the Wilson Museum in Castine, the Woodlawn was recommended to us by one of their staff as an excellent example of a Maine country estate, so today we decided to give it a try. The Woodlawn is a 180-acre historic estate that was the residence for three generations of the Black family. The exterior of the main house was going through a total restoration at this time and is complete covered with staging, so I got no pictures. The grounds have many interesting features such as barns, gardens and a six-court competitive croquet lawn. The interior of this historical mansion contains a well-maintained extremely intact ... read more

Castine, Maine Maritime Academy We crossed the Deer Isle Bridge again and headed south on Rt. 176 through the town of Penobscot to Castine. The center of this classic New England town organizes around the lovely campus of the Maine Maritime Academy. The Campus winds down to the waterfront out to a public wharf and the Academy’s piers. We sat on a picnic table on the town wharf and consumed our second great lunch of lobster from Kurt’s great catch. The State of Maine, the Academy’s training ship is tied up here and we took the 1pm tour. The tour takes you up, through, down and around the ship. A female student seaman led our tour and shared her experiences on the ship and at the school. Her presentation was both knowledgeable and interesting. She had ... read more

Brooklin Tuesday, we crossed the Deer Isle Bridge and headed northwest on route 175 to Brooklin and the Wooden Boat School. Along the way, we passed through the town of Sedgewick. This is the town where Kurt’s sail loft is located. He gave us the grand tour and showed us his work. He’s currently in the process of making a mizzen sail for a Herreshoff A boat. Back on the road we blinked and drove right through the center of Brooklin. The center of town is so small, we didn’t realize we’d past it until all we saw along the road were trees again. There isn’t even a cross road, but only a T. We backtracked to the dozen buildings that make up town center. By now all our appetites were active and we wanted some ... read more

Isle au Haut On Monday, we decided to get out early and ride the mail boat to Isle au Haut. We drove to Stonington to ride the boat, but when we got there the harbor was socked in with pea soup fog. Byrd and I still wanted to go, but Karen was reluctant to go in the fog. The girl in the ticket booth said it was supposed to clear, but gave us no guarantee. Byrd and I decided to go and we convinced Karen to join us, so we all bought tickets. As we boarded the boat with the dozen other hardy souls, the fog began to clear and it was completely gone by the time we were a mile outside the harbor. The boat passes the Crotch Island quarry on it's trip to the ... read more

Stonington, The end of the road. August 10, 2009 When you drive east on the Deer Isle peninsula down the winding roads, over the many bridges and causeways, the road comes to an end in the village of Stonington. Stonington is a vibrant community that survives on a combination of fishing, art studios, tourists and a granite quarry. We’ve ended up here numerous times during our week on the peninsula. We’ve walked the town, visited the shops, eaten in the restaurants, had ice cream on the pier and taken the mail boat to Isle au Haut. Fishing certainly dominates the economy and fishing boats, piers and docks dominate the vista. Across the harbor is Crotch Island, an active granite quarry that produced the granite for the JFK Memorial. One of the storefronts in the center of ... read more

August 10, 2009 - Our first day here, we began our exploration of the peninsula by driving along the coast road and ended up visiting the town of Blue Hill. It’s another lovely little town on the coast on Maine with welcoming shops, galleries and a beautiful harbor. Byrd wanted to buy a fresh made pie, so we stopped and looked in every small shop in town for a fresh pie. Don’t go looking for fresh pie after noontime in Maine, the dozen shops we tried were all sold out. We stopped at the Blue Moose Pub in Blue Hill for lunch. I walked in the door expecting to sit at a bar, have a relaxing beer with lunch and hopefully catch up on the Red Sox. The only problem is Blue Moose Pub doesn’t have ... read more
