Checked out of Calistoga this morning to ultimately head to San Francisco. First a few stops. The Petrified Forest is located near Calistoga and has a number of trees that were tumbled over 3,400,000 years ago. A volcano from nearby Mt. St. Helena erupted and now these giant redwoods, pines and firs are all turned to stone. It truly is remarkable to see what nature can do. Next stop is the town of Healdsburg, where we were treated to a private wine tasting at Hauck Cellars by Greg Hauck. Many years ago, Sweetie and Greg were classmates at Milton High School. Almost ten (10) years ago, Greg and his wife Jennifer moved to California and worked for local winemakers with a vision to make their own wine. Not only have they done this but have been ... read more

So we started the day at the Calistoga Roastery - a great community coffee shop/gathering spot in Downtown Calistoga. We both had breakfast sandwiches - avocado, egg, cheese and tomato taste really, really good on an English Muffin. Also, one of the best skinny Hazelnut Lattes ever! Hung out, read the paper and thought about how cool it would be to live in Calistoga... Had to head back to the hotel and change rooms since Sweetie wanted an extra night. The room is fine but we don't recommend the 260s area. No view and extra steps - not an issue if you're not toting a months' worth of luggage. Highly recommend the 203 area next to the sundeck! So, enough, logistical nonsense, let's hit the wineries. As usual, where do you start? We made a choice ... read more

Woke up this morning and decided "we need one more day in Calistoga"! That is the beauty of this trip - flexibility. Decided to chill out by the Mineral Pools at the hotel. They have four (4) natural mineral pools with varying temperatures - 80, 90, 100 and 104. People start getting in at 8am and spend the day soaking in the pool and lounging nearby in the sun. We have been blessed with this weather - 73 and sunny - both of us got a little sunburned. Note to self - don't drink Pinot Grigio and take a nap. Calistoga Spa and Hot Springs rates high praise from us both. Not fancy but homey with kitchenettes and grills and ample picnic tables. A bunch of guests are grilling out and enjoying al fresco dining. It's ... read more

Oh My God, we could not order up better weather than we have gotten on this trip. Chilly at night and cloudless, mid 70s during the day. And this day is no different! We leave Calistoga and head to Glen Ellen for the BR Cohn Wine and Music Festival. We arrive and enjoy the sounds of The Turtles (Flo and Eddie), including their hits Happy Together, It Ain't Me Babe and On the Eve of Destruction, just to name a few. Next up was Dave Mason, with his early days with Traffic and hits like Feelin' Alright, We Just Disagree and on Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland album, he recorded Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. Next on the big stage was Kenny Loggins with Return to Pooh Corner, I'm Alright, FootLoose and Danger Zone. He was ... read more

Today is a long day of driving - approximately 8 hours to get to Calistoga but we're up for the job! After a terrific breakfast with Debbie and Power Ranger Isaiah, we hit I-5 South. Not much to report about this day - Oregon is truly a beautiful state - green, mountainous, there just aren't words. We made sure to fill up with gas before crossing into California (thank you Wendy for the warning!). We Georgians are spoiled with our $3.69/gallon. Oregon is in the low 4s and California, at least Calistoga is holding in the mid 4s and offering slightly lower if you pay cash. The news is reporting high 5s in the bay area... Made it into Calistoga around 6:10 listening to the Dawgs get the shit kicked out of them by Gamecocks! Checked ... read more

After a good nights sleep, we had a nice breakfast at Hotel Oregon. Sweetiepie had baked eggs with ham and sweet cream, really good. I had an omelet with cheddar, sausage, mushroom, and spinach. We checked out of the hotel after a walk around downtown and visit to health food store where Ahole was trying to find cookies or candy bar, with no luck...haha! Our first winery stop was at Coeur de Terre. A lovely, small winery that's only about 14 years old. We were greeted by Jack, a tail wagging, Labrador mix. The friendly staff informed us that they were in three (3) Atlanta restaurants: Restaurant Eugene, Wisteria and also Rathbuns, as well as Whole Foods. We tasted several wines including a Riesling, Pinot Gris and three (3) different Pinot Noirs. We liked all of ... read more

So the day started off a little slow - our rental car wasn't ready but fortunately Hertz and Five Star Gold Membership got us an upgrade to a Chevy Traverse for less than what we were originally quoted - yes, Virginia, there is a Santa! We met up with Tim one more time in Issaquah at the Salmon Hatchery (I believe there is an underground movement to convince us Southerners that Salmon is Good Food...) The hatchery was pretty interesting and definitely worth seeing if you are interested. I had no idea that salmon return to their home river to spawn - check out the pics! From there, we headed to Bellevue because Sweetie, being sweet, read about a Chinese Dumpling place that only has 2 locations in the United States. Din Tai Fung was located ... read more

So what happens when someone makes Sweetie mad? He gets to ride a 175 foot tall Ferris Wheel over Elliott Bay... After a not so great lunch at Fisherman's - we're almost positive the AHole got frozen fish and prawns. Crab and Cheddar melt is really just bread and cheese. Thank goodness for another perfect 10 weather day and a great view. The view is even better at 175 feet if YOU KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN. Probably even better if you hadn't had a cruddy lunch... The mountain range, the bay, the city - really cool and they said we'd only go around 3 times but we actually went 5 times so now someone is very SWEET! Alot of you know that we enjoy baseball and parks so we headed to SafeCo for the last Mariners' ... read more

Today we left hotel and headed back down to water for breakfast at Lowells, located in Pike Place Market. Another beautiful day in Seattle with a little cooler temps. The breakfast was really good - Sweetie had a breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg, cheese and spinach. I had slow braised corn beef hash with poached eggs, yum-yum. A little shopping produced a long sleeve t-shirt from Pike place fish mkt. for me and Sweetie got a sweatshirt of this little piggy went to market. From there we went to EMP, Experience Music Project museum. Really cool museum with exhibits of the history of guitar (acoustic and electric), Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix and Rolling Stones Exile on Mainstreet 1972 tour. Sweetie's favorite though was Don't Look Now, a history of horror movies. Lunch today was at La Lot ... read more

We made it! After a 5 1/2 hour flight - thank goodness for First Class or Lamar may have left :) we arrived in Seattle to perfect weather (74 and sunny). We checked into the Hotel Max downtown and learned what "European style" means - tiny, especially with 6 pieces of luggage... It's a cool hotel - all the doors have pics of musicians and street performers - we have Frank Zappa -a good sign! Starving to death, airplane pizza is not good and you can only eat so many bags of Sun Chips, we found Blue Acre about a block from our hotel. Great choice with great staff - started with Clams in Purgatory - Manilla clams in a garlic, jalapeno, orange zest broth with chunks of Portugese Sausage. Sweetie had the Nordstrom Salad with ... read more
