Suzanne here... I was slightly dubious about spending18 hours on a bus, but it was by far the cheapest way to get up to Salta. In fact it wasn't too bad. As we moved north the scenery changed to plains and mountains, looking much more like the Argentina of my imagination. We did pass a double-decker bus by the side of the road which I can only described as decapitated. The prospect of an overnight bus didn't thrill me after that. But it was fine. Even if it did take 20 hours in the end. We finally arrived at Salta. Our first job was to book onward tickets to Chile. Unfortunately due to a storm the mountain pass was closed and they could not confirm whether or not the bus we wanted would be running. This ... read more

David here... We got up early and had a quick breakfast before getting over to the bus station on the outskirts of San Rafael. Our bus was at 10:00 and we timed it pretty well. We stowed our bags and sat down and away we went. The journey was only 3 hours and was uneventful, though we did get coffee and a snack which was a bit of a surprise for such a cheap ticket. At Mendoza we were faced with a 40 minute walk to the hotel from the bus terminal. This would normally be fine but my cold really hit me and I was struggling. We got to the Bohemia Boutique hotel and were soon in a lovely, well decorated room which felt spacious despite it being quite small. We relaxed for a while, ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » San Rafael June 12th 2017

Suzanne here... We arrived at San Rafael at 6.20am. It was a bit early to try and find somewhere for breakfast so we decided just to stay at the bus station and read. All went well for about an hour or so, when some old guy decided that out of all the deserted seating he needed to sit right by us, and listen to his crappy music on his crappy phone. As I've mentioned a million times, playing sound on your phone speaker is a surefire way to get me to mutter a curse of painful death upon you. The world is loud enough. Use some f*!&ing headphones! After moving, we read a bit more before heading to the hotel about 9am. We'd both slept a little on the bus and didn't feel too bad, but ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Córdoba June 9th 2017

David here... The 7 hour bus journey from Rosario to Cordoba was hell, hell I tell you. Actually it wasn't at all, it was surprisingly comfortable and the people on this bus seemed to have a bit of consideration for once. We both read, dozed, watched the scenery pass by, ate the lovely ham and cheese sandwiches Suzanne had prepared the night before, and before we knew it we were in Cordoba. The bus station was only a few minutes from our apartment but we were quite early to meet the host so wandered round for a bit. The place seemed to have a vibrancy missing from Rosario and numerous choices for food and drink. We got to our apartment just before 17:00. Ana was waiting for us and showed us into the lovely apartment at ... read more

Suzanne here... Poor Rosario, it had a lot to live up to. Buenos Aires had been wonderful. In fact the last time we fell for a city as hard was Berlin, over ten years ago. That obsession has led to twice yearly visits ever since. As BA won't be nearly as easy to get to from the UK, who knows when we'll return? So frankly I was reluctant to leave at all. Which did not make me feel kindly towards Rosario. The bus journey was ok, but the route into the city was a little shabby, which didn't help me feel any more positive. We picked up our onward bus tickets to Cordoba before leaving the bus station, then walked the 30 minutes to Livin' Residence apartments. It was fine, but no Lemon Apartments. It was ... read more

David here... The ferry journey from Colonia to Buenos Aires was quick, simple and comfortable. We arrived at the port and breezed through both Uruguay and Argentinian immigration. It wasn't long until we were boarding. This time not a little catamaran, but a full blown ferry capable of taking hundreds of passengers and vehicles. It did feel like every other person was a child intent on crying, whinging or sceaming, to the point that Suzanne put earplugs in. Thankfully the journey was quick, taking just over an hour, smooth and very comfortable. We picked up our bags, changed our remaining Uruguayan money for Argentinian pesos and stepped out into country number 15, and the 11th new country of the trip so far. The first thing we saw when we stepped out was skyscrapers. We'd not seen ... read more

Suzanne here... At around an hour and a half, the bus journey from Carmelo was much too short for my liking. We really enjoy traveling by bus. We'd seen a bit of scenery and eaten the cheese baguettes I'd made before we left. I then had just the tiniest little snooze, when David informed me we were nearly there. Bah. Hotel Perla del Plata was just a short walk from the bus station. It wasn't our first choice, but hotels in Colonia are rather pricey. Luckily it was actually quite nice. Small room but clean and comfortable, so nothing really wrong with it. Colonia del Sacramento is a very pretty little town with cobbled streets and a UNESCO listed historic centre. It's on the Rio de la Plata, the same river as Carmelo. At Carmelo it ... read more

David here... True to form, within 20 minutes of setting out from Montevideo by bus, we were both nodding off. The scenery in Uruguay is pretty flat so we weren't missing much really. The journey was 3.5 hours and was very comfortable, although it was also a local bus with people jumping on and off at random points. Oliver, our host in Carmelo, met us at the bus station and drove us to our lodgings - La Pratica. Along the way he told us about the town, landmarks, where to get supplies, the best places to eat, etc. All very useful and it was nice to be able to chat to someone in English for a change. We were staying in an old shipping container converted into a room, with a sofa bed, bathroom, and a ... read more

Suzanne here... The night bus from Porto Alegre was fine. We were given dinner, then they put on a Simon Pegg film. We'd never heard of 'Hector and the search for happiness' and it wasn't the greatest film ever. But it kept us entertained until it was time to try and sleep. What I don't understand is why, on any normal bus journey I'm nodding off within ten minutes. But put me on a night bus and I'm wide awake. We did both manage to get some sleep eventually. I completely missed passport contol. The bus attendant handled all of that while everyone slept. The bus attendant decided it was time for us all to wake up, and put Bonnie Tyler 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' on, which didn't go down well with everyone. We liked ... read more

David here... As Suzanne has mentioned, the airport at Foz was awful. Once you were through the security there were no amenities or shops, just one big, crowded area where the gates are. We passed the time reading, I'm currently working my way through the Jack Reacher novels. The plane was a small, propeller plane and we'd been allocated seats 1A and 1B but had to move as it was an emergency exit and we don't speak Portuguese, no real hassle. The flight was uneventful, though we did get soft drinks and a generous pile of snacks, which was a surprise as we were on Azul Airlines, the Ryanair of Brazilian air travel. We arrived in Porto Alegre at 20:30 and promptly got our bags and walked the short distance between Terminal 2 and Terminal 1 ... read more
