After what seemed like an unusually long flight we made it to Bangkok and spent the first day doing practically nothing other than a dip in the hotel pool and sitting like zombies in a street bar!. After a second nights rest we were recovered and ready to go. We took a walk to the pier by the wide river that runs through the city of Bangkok. The river offers a brilliant way to get around, avoiding the traffic congested roads and it's quite scenic too. The public boat stops every few hundred metres or so, zig zaging across the river dropping people of. A fare to anywhere is just 14 baht. ( around 25p) We cruised past the Grand Palace without stopping off as we'd been there before and instead got of at Wat Arun ... read more

Well the rain that started the previous evening carried on all night and throughout the next day putting the dampers on our plans for that day. We had intended to visit an area dotted with lakes and mountains but soon realized that would be impossible as the rain poured and poured. We gave up and watched the Olympic Games on TV and Gary and Milena went shopping. Fortunately, that night, we found a lovely Swiss restaurant close to our guesthouse so didn't get too wet. And there we were once again at the end of our holiday. The next day we caught the bus back to Krakow, spent the afternoon exploring the main square and market before saying our goodbyes as Gary and Milena caught their return flight to London and us back to Manchester.... read more

The morning dawned bright and clear and by 7am we were stood in the queue waiting for the cable car to take us to the summit of Kasprowy Wierch. By 7.45am we were at the summit drinking in the amazing views. Half an hour later the whole group had made it to the top and we were ready to start the long walk down. Although the aim was to go down the mountain there was also a lot of paths going up that we had to encounter, some trickier than others! At one point there was an opportunity to take a detour and take in another peak, Giewont. The path was known to be very steep with chains at the very top to help your ascent. However as we got closer we could see a long ... read more

Next morning we woke up to rain! We were due to get the bus to Zakopane so set about finding somewhere for breakfast then the bus station. Chaos! Long queues everywhere and very difficult timetables to follow. After standing in a long queue for ages and not moving we were advised to just go and try to get on the bus and pay the driver. We did this and thankfully were on our way soon after midday. The rain continued all day making the bus journey twice as long due to crawling traffic. We arrived at our accommodation in Zakopane like drowned rats! Thankfully it stopped in time for us to go into town for an evening meal. Next day dawned bright and clear and we headed for the mountains. We spent the rest of that ... read more

Five years ago was the wedding in Poland of Gary and Milena. After the wedding, Stan and I took a short trip to Zakopane in the Tatras mountains. We promised ourselves that one day we would return but with Gary and Milena. Well the perfect opportunity popped up. Katarina and Nathan, 2 friends of theirs were getting married in Krakow and many of the wedding party were then moving into Zakopane. We arrived in the lovely old town of Krakow Friday lunchtime and after spending the afternoon exploring the castle met up with Gary and Milena for drinks and an evening meal. Milena's parents were there too. It was a sweltering 29 degrees that day and still very warm throughout the evening but as we left the restaurant around 11pm we noticed a dramatic drop in ... read more

We've just spent two weeks on a beautiful chilled out tropical island. Sadly things weren't as idillic as I hoped for. The bus journey from Kuala Lumpur to the East coast ended up taking much longer than scheduled and had caused my injured leg to swell again. I figured after a couple of days chilling out and swimming things would improve but unfortunately not. After 3 days with no improvement, Kayan, the owner of the chalets here, took me to a doctor he knew and trusted on the mainland. This time I was diagnosed with having developed a huge blood clot which, added to the tissue damage, was making walking painful. The doctor said it would clear on its own eventually, maybe three or four weeks! It was ok to walk short distances and flying would ... read more

It's funny how life has it's ups and downs sometimes. All the time we'd been in Kuala Lumpur Stan had been off colour. Feverish one day then fine the next. We figured a spot of island time would put him right. We took the 3 hour bus ride to Lumut which turned out to be 4.30 hours! The bus was highly air conned - in other words - freezing. When we got off it was a stifling 34 degrees C. We found the ferry and boarded it to the island of Pulau Pangkor. Once there we jumped in a taxi and arrived at the accommodation we'd booked. It was awful and we'd paid two nights up front as Booking . com said it was fully booked later in the week. Annoyingly this was a lie the ... read more

While we were in the Kuala Lumpur area we had planned to go and visit the fireflies at Selangor an hour's drive away. We had planned to get the local bus ( local as in ' hot and uncomfy') to Selangor and stay one night as it would be difficult to get back the same day as the trip involved a boat trip along river after dark. By chance we were invited to a B B Q at a backpacker hostel, Travel Hub, one night in China Town. While we were there we discovered they had a trip organised the next day to see the fireflies and also visit an elephant sanctuary. Noor, the organiser insisted it would be very difficult to arrange it ourselves and we should join them. At a reasonable price too. We ... read more

This is just a quick selection of photos for my friends and family who don't do Facebook. Sorry to those who have already seen these photos for boring you. We visited the orchid gardens and butterfly park in Kuala Lumpur today. That's one good thing about this city. There are plenty of places to escape the traffic and general city noise. There were also exibits of the insects and spiders that live in this part of the world. We've experienced some but it was scary to see others even bigger, hope I never see them in the wild!! From the gardens we then visited the National Mosque of Malaysia. I now know what it's like to wear a headdress like the local ladies! It's hot! ... read more

We arrived at Makassar airport to the usual utter chaos of an Indonesian airport. We'd done our research and knew there was an airport bus that took you to the city centre so had booked a hotel there. We showed the name of the hotel and address to the woman at the ticket booth, she screwed up her face then read on to the address and reassured us the bus would go close to it so we bought the ticket and boarded the bus, showing the hotel name and address to the driver, same reaction -he seemed to recognise the road name. When all seats were full the bus set off but soon hit terrible traffic, road works were going on and only one lane of the dual carriageway was open. Despite this, traffic crushed into ... read more
