South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires January 22nd 2009

As usual Olga woke us up at 7:30am even if she knows we only have afternoon classes. After eating our crakers for breakfast we took the subway to go to Palermo with Elia. The Palermo neighbourhood comprises several parks, stores and restaurants. It reminded me la rue St-Denis but everything opens only at noon and then closes for most of the afternoon for the siesta. After school we headed back to Palermo to visit el museo de Arte Decorativo. The open hours seemed to have changed since the last time we checked on their website so we couldn't get in. The same thing happened when we wanted to visit the Museo of Arte Latinamericano de Buenos Aires. Argentineans seem to randomly change their open hours so you often end up going to some places and realize ... read more

Since then on Elena cannot spend one day without visiting Havana. Je vais essayer de rapporter des Alfajores. (au chocolat bien entendu) http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfajor Elena left me to have dinner with her relatives after school and I got stuck at Olga's eating one of her horrible dinners. Olga proposed to go watch a movie after dinner so Daisy, Gabriel, Davide and myself went to the movie theater. Argentineans don't like dubbed movies so we only had a choice of two movies - Bolt and a movie I've never heard about. We finally opted for the cartoons movie. ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 20th 2009

We visited a neighbourhood called Palermo on Tuesday morning with our Italian-Swiss housemate. :) ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 19th 2009

We are taking it easy this week as we are still tired from last week. We're also running out of things to visit. We spent Monday morning on the bus to return to Buenos Aires. We got up at 6:30am to make sure we get on time to school. Buses are really comfortable in Argentina with seats that can almost become beds. We forgot to take pictures but we should have plenty of time in our next 4-5 trips of 10 hour long.... read more

We went to the beach for half of the day. It was really nice to fall asleep under the heat of the sun, but we were constantly avoken by the saleemes of any kind, selling swimsuits, mate, sunglasses, gold chains, some kind of a wistle that is supposed to be like a bird but is extremely annoying, icecream and empanadas, and anything else you can think of. Stef was brave enough to go into the water. For me the water was too cold, even after overheating on the beach. ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Tigre January 17th 2009

Then we went to the “Puerto de Frutos” (fruit port) in the afternoon, which is now a crafts fair located in the old fruit market by the riverside. The trip to Tigre took us 40 minutes on a train. This was the first time I saw shanty towns in BsAs in such proximity as the train pulled out of the station. It looked davastating and disturbing. ... read more

Initially we were planning to visit the modern museum but on location found out that it was under renovation, so instead we followed south passing Russian Orthodox church and finally reaching la Boca. La Boca was created by the settlement of italian immigrants. Its a pretty neat place with tango dancers of every restaurant patio and multitude of little shops. Getting there was the most interesting part ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 16th 2009

Olga woke us up at 8.15 as usual for breakfast. We told her that we prefer to sleep a little longer and have no breakfast. So she came back and woke us up again in 1 hour, so we had no choice but to get out of the apartment. We had lunch with some classmates at Cafe Tortoni. It's one of the oldest Cafés in Buenos Aires.

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 15th 2009

Elena almost got attacked by a bird while she was trying to take a picture. I have no idea what kind of bird it was but at one point it started to make really weird sounds and moving its beak quickly. (still while moving towards Elena) I doubt she's going to take any more pictures of birds. Does anyone know what kind of bird it is? (Un parc avec une tour. voir photo) The way to the Japanese Gardens would pretty much describe all ... read more

The original plan was to go to the Jardin Japones, but since it was rianing a little in the morning, we decided to stop by the bus station and check out where we should buy tickets. This is the sketchiest part we have visited so far - so we kept watching our backpacks and making sure no one was following us. Going with the flow we ended up in Recoleta, one of the rich areas of BsAs and it's famous Recoleta Cemetary. It was a very strange experience for me: the most beautiful masoleums made out of marble, with delicate white curtains, mosaics and statues of angels that look almost like extravagant monuments, some brocken into but most weirdly displaying coffins of families or even dynasties. We followed a bunch of turists to Evita's grave. We ... read more
