Saturday 5 December We awoke at 8.30 am after our late night and had a slow start. During the morning a massive convoy off motorcycles went by, with teddy bears and xmas decorations and of course Santa - on a motorcycle, looking it up later it appears to be The Salvation Army Toy Run. We took a walk across the road to the restaurant in the windmill and had some breakfast. Pat ordered poached eggs on toast and I had the big breakfast. With an English Breakfast pot of tea and an iced frappe came to AUS$38.50. My breakfast had eggs, bacon, sausage, sourdough, with red onion, mushroom and spinach relish. Lovely. Then down to the seafront after browsing through some shops on the way at which Pat bought an ankle bracelet. We had discussed visting ... read more

Friday 4 December A good nights sleep again. We awoke at 7.30 am and did all the usual packing and getting ready. I forgot to mention yesterday, when we were at Emu Park we saw a statue called The Singing Ship. It is partially made up of hollow tubes, which the wind blows through and yes it does make a noise, not sure you would call it singing, but whatever. It was created to commemorate the bicentenary of Captain Cook who passed this way in May 1770. We were on the road and on our way to Bargara, our destination for today at 9.15 am. We drove towards and through Rockhampton a large town along the A1 Bruce highway. Unfortunately, whilst on the main highway a lorry on the other carraige threw up a stone and ... read more

Wednesday 2 December We had a lovely cooked breakfast at the motel this morning. Because we woke early, we were packed and ready to move by 8 am. I had paid for the room and dinner, while we were at breakfast AUS$133. So, I dropped the key at reception and we were off. We had a few things we needed and almost as soon as we joined the A1 Bruce Highway spotted a big Woolworths on a retail park, so a quick lane change and we were at the car park. We found all of the things we wanted, including some in the attached chemist, so all was good. Then back off again at 8.40 am. Yesterday, when we looked at the map for our journey, Pat had spotted a slightly inland route. The Bruce highway ... read more

Monday 1 December We didn't leave the room again last night and had sandwiches and fruit from our provisions. Another good nights sleep, but woke early. The objective today was to put some miles on the clock and get a little nearer to Brisbane. We readied and packed stuff and took everything down to the car. Out of the underground car park and round to the front. Walked up to reception and checked out. Two nights AUS$ 181. 9 am 30℃ and on the road. We found our way out of Townsville easily and we were on the A1 Bruce highway for most of the day. We alternated driving today, changing roughly hourly. Our stop for lunch was going to be Bowen and we arrived at 11.45 am. This is also about halfway. We drove down ... read more

Sunday 29 November Both of us slept like logs last night after a busy couple of days. Although we did wake early and Pat was making coffee about 7.30 am. We hadn't brought much stuff in from the car, as we had readied overnight stuff only to bring in. So we prepared for the day and took stuff to the car. I spoke with the owner for a short while, about various things. At 8.00 am it was 32℃. We departed at just before 9.30 am and were heading for Townsville which is not far away, so an easy drive. Nothing in particular to stop for along the way unless we choose to do so. We saw a sign for a lookout which appealed and pulled off the road into a layby. Hinchinbrook island was the ... read more

Friday 27 November continued We were pretty tired from the day on the boat, but decided we should eat something as we were a little hungry. Pat suggested we tried the Steak on Lake restaurant attached to the hotel. We went down at 7 pm, at which time the place was empty. We ordered a rib-eye steak and a lamb rogan josh. A lovely meal and with drinks was AUD$70.20. The place did fill up a little with people before we left. Back to the room to pack. Saturday 28 November As well as checking out this morning we have arranged a trip out for the day. A coach was due to pick us up at 8.45 am. When we had found details of the trip, you start at one place and finish in another, so ... read more

Wednesday 25 November continued After our walk last night we had a quiet evening. I don't think I mentioned we have had a further time zone change when we arrived in Cairns so the clocks have gone back an hour for us. We drove 13 kilometres today! Sunset was therefore 6 something. It was also a full moon last night. Thursday 26 November We woke early and after getting ready eventually moved off at 9.50 am. Our initial objective today is Mossman gorge, North of Cairns and about 75 kilometres. The drive is along a beautiful coastal road, winding along next to the seashore a lot of the time, with the blue sea to your right all the way. One of the major crops here is sugar cane and there is field after field of the ... read more

Monday 23 November Another good nights sleep, went to bed, went to sleep, slept for hours, woke up, got up. Just how I like it. Not an early start, again, our mission was to return the hire car to Hertz by 12.00. We had directions and local advice, we set off about 10.30 am. The instructions were brilliant and found our way straight there. There was no drama at all in the return. Total kilometers 1639 over the last few days. Then we went to find the shopping areas. We pottered for a while and purchased a few items. Stopped for lunch at an Italian restaurant in the theatre area. Pat had a Salmon penne and I had a spaghetti carbonara. St. Paul's Cathedral was open so we popped in to look around. Then off to the ... read more

Friday 20 November It has rained overnight and is overcast. We chatted for quite a while last night and catching up. A slow start to the day and Paul had very kindly taken the day off, so we took a trip in Melbourne city. We took the local train service and then ambled around, until meeting Fran for lunch. Whilst on the train we were standing and two young ladies who were sitting offered Paul and I their seats. That's a first for me and I must be getting old. Then back to Northcote arriving at 3.15 pm. In the evening we drove to visit Paul's cycle shop and the across the road to Chu Manchu for some Vietnamese food for our dinner. A stop for ice cream on the way home and watched houses in ... read more

Wednesday 18 November 378 kilometers driven yesterday. The main highway is not far away and you can hear the road trains roaring passed through the night but we got a reasonable nights sleep. We showered and readied and left the motel about 9.30 am. Pat was well after her first alcohol for a while and no suffering. We had a some purchases to make and stopped first at Woolworths. Then popped into Mount Gambier and looked at the cave gardens in the centre of town. Then on to a coffee shop, where we had coffee and croissants to start the day. We had a quick look at the town then off. Our first stop was going to be Portland area and we pootled along. Pine forests are still predominating and also the trucks carrying the logs, ... read more
