Yay, social work!! Hi, Stacey~ I'm so glad you'll be in social work, maybe clinical like me. It's a fairly well-paid profession, given the activists that keep watch and advocate for us all. When you get back, I want to give you a reprint from the New Yorker about an American couple returning from China who were culture-shocked. Theirs was very different from your experience, but interesting. ~Sandy
It's called Tequila Jack's, in Kowloon. I don't really know how to describe how to get there, but here's the info: 33-35 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon
Tel: (852) 3428 5133
holy lots of writing batman! You weren't kidding, but I am glad you caught us up! I was feeling left out of the china adventure there ;p ! Miss you both lots!! sounds like you are having a great time before another vacay! LOVE YOU!!!
change change Sometimes new adaptions to things are difficult and sometimes the changes are welcome transitions...to more adventures...hopefully your new changes will delight you both...enjoy your dad and sister and both of you savor the last months there:0 I lv you and send you many hugs :)
Sounds like Fun You guys made the best of the crappy weather and enjoying friends during the holiday. Have fun in Beijing and really want to meet the family this trip.
We know exactly how you feel! The exact same thing happens to us in Vietnam. Kris once made a girl fall down the stairs in a shopping centre because she was walking down them and spied us in a coffee shop at the moment. Her shock caused her to loose control of her legs.
We thought it was just a Haiphong thing, cos there are not many foreigners there, but no, it still happens in Ho Chi Minh City too. The echos of "Tay" (foreigner in Vietnamese) will haunt us to the end!
Trees are good I once saw a woman trip up the stairs and land on her face because she was so busy staring at my friend and me. I'm sure her high heels didn't help.
It would be most interesting to go back to China in 10 years to see if there have been changes in how they look at Americans and whether they are still pointing and exclaming Waiguoren or whether it's become so natural to them that they no longer take notice except for the fact that you are slightly taller than they are...ahhh, but the differences in mankind is what makes life interesting!
Very cool that you started the day out speaking Spanish to you kiddos...am sure they will long remember and tell the story to their own kids someday...at least we hope, right.
Thanks for the great conversation tonight...love you both so much! Glad that Dad and Debi will be there soon to share the time with you and already looking forward to having you home! What an awesome experience you have had and who knows what your next adventure brings for you both!
I'm fluent I can still say hi and bye and now sit down so does that qualify me? Loved this write up and glad you are getting even better at communicating and still laughing about it all.
The anthem They play the national anthem right before movies, too. Everyone in the theater stands respectfully. When I did it, only foreigners were in the theater, no nationals. And--it was nice to see--everyone stood quietly. :)
hurray for a new post! about time :) i know i'm one of the ones that's been bugging you. i just like attempting to live through your experiences...especially while i'm stuck at work all day. i'm so glad that everything has gone well for you both, and can't wait to eat some mexican food with you when you get back! :) love you!

sneezies Sounds like you are both finally on the mend again and had a fun filled weekend with your good buddies. Life long friends you've made over there!!! So happy that your dad and sis are coming over in April Stace:) Woowoo!!!
ahh Pete and I laughed out loud at your blog as we are sitting in our hostel in HK right now. We experienced some familiar things with the plane and Chinese passengers. We are excited to be so close to home and to be able to relax. See you soon.
Ok, ok...you have totally convince me...I DO NEED to come back to SE Asia and tour around a bit more...so mainland China didn't leave a good first impression...but your trip just makes the rest sound so amazing! What great memories you guys will always have!
what an amazing day...all your food sounded just heavenly! Most importantly though, I LOVE your advice to people when the travel...definitely worth the time to try at least saying hi in their language...instead of always thinking that English and America is the best!
Hope you truly do contact Gary at some point...such a small world experience! Glad you survived the trip there and the night in the small town...and were able to enjoy such amazing food!
After graduating from college in 2007 and spending a few years in the working world, we randomly decided to move across the world and teach English in China. Hmm...foolish, or awesome? It's going to be the year of a lifetime, with adventures we'll never forget. Join us as we cry, laugh, experience life as we never have before, and make new friends while trying to stay in touch with the old ones. We'll be returning to the USA during the summer of 2010, where we'll hopefully move to a new city and begin life yet again anew.... full info
