We took the train to downtown NY today, alighting at the World Trade Centre. No 1 opened a few months ago and is apparently the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. It's really quite amazing (hopefully photo uploaded) and if you stand near the base and look up you can hardly see the top. We visited the memorials too, one for each tower, which are also incredible and very poignant. After a mooch around we bought tickets for a 'hop on hop off' boat trip around Manhattan and out to the Statue of Liberty. There was a very cheery chap doing a tour guide commentary which started with a request not to stand on the seats and included an invitation to buy refreshments from the on-board bar and start your happy hour early, because "...it's always ... read more

So.... after a 4am UK start, an eight hour flight and five hours sightseeing in NYC we hobbled back to the Marriott at Newark and the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever had the pleasure of. Spencer was explaining how important it was to try and stay awake until it was bed time, to get to grips with the time zone early on. The conversation went something like... "If we stay awake until 9 tonight, then tomorrow we wi zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzz zzzzz' Literally mid sentence. Now, I've never found myself particularly boring (no need to reply) but seriously??? Loving NYC which is like something out of a movie set. Particularly taken with the local accent and have given over to impersonating Ruby Wax at every opportunity and exclaiming over every place that I have vaguely ... read more

The train pulled into to St Petersburg station as expected at 5am on my last full day. The holiday booking agent had warned me that the accommodation in St Peters was not great so I already had low expectations as I arrived at the hotel. Although I was keen to save money on accommodation booking into a young offenders bail hostel probably was not the greatest plan. The security guard greeted me as my driver pushed me reluctantly through the front door. My attention was drawn to a sign on the door "no alcohol on the premises after 11pm". I was given my key to room 306 and headed up the stairs with my rucksack to the fourth floor. I hung my jacket in the Formica wardrobe that was propped up on a folded city map ... read more

It was like a scene from the battle of Waterloo in compartment 12 - 16 on train 56 due to depart Moscow at 2040hrs. I was first to arrive at the station after an uneventful journey and made my way to my cabin on carriage number three. Seated on the bottom bunk was a gloomy looking Russian man in his late fifties holding his head between his hands. The Aussie sisters soon arrived and we began the well practiced process of arranging the beds and stowing the luggage. Suddenly in the door way two well dressed French woman waved their train tickets in the air, they were quickly joined by a short French man wearing a tweed jacket with long side burns and a goaty beard. They insisted that we were in the wrong cabin and ... read more

The weather in Irkutsk had steadily deteriorated over the weekend, becoming colder with the snow falling constantly. The homestay was gradually getting warmer and more uncomfortable as unregulated hot water flowed into the radiators, the only way to cool the room was to open the window. The final breakfast a vast improvement on the others, perhaps because two new guests from Switzerland had arrived. Pancakes, cheeses, ham, jams and real butter, Olga really had pulled the stops out for my final morning. Sad to move on I said my goodbyes and arrived at a cold station platform where I met the Aussie sisters, we boarded the 8pm train to Moscow, the start of our epic four night journey to the capital city. The first night was uncomfortable and incredibly hot in the cabin. The train rattled ... read more

I opened the curtain to a freezing scene outside. During the night a good few inches of snow had fallen. My room was warm, I think the heating and hot water is always on and supplied to the entire block (I have looked round the flat and can't find a boiler) from a central boiler room. Olga had prepared some kind of oat/ porridge for breakfast, probably noticing my dislike for her pancake things. The porridge was no better though and in an effort to entice me to eat it she added a dollop of butter which made the situation even worse, I insisted that bread and jam was a sufficient breakfast even in Siberia. I left the homestay with a plan to head up to Listvyanka village about 70km from Irkutsk by public transport. The ... read more

I was met at Irkutsk station by Lena a local Russian lady who was to take me to my homestay accommodation. I thought that it would be a good idea to experience a piece of the real Russia and stay with a local family for a few nights, something at that moment I was regretting. The night on the train from Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk had been tough, I had little sleep and we were woken at 5am by the attendant who wanted to get the toilets cleaned before we pulled into our final destination at 7am! I was leaving the Aussie sisters who had upgraded and were off to a hotel for a few nights before we met again. A short car journey later found me at the homestay. I was in shock as I studied ... read more

I thought travelling on the train for 36 hours between Ulaanbaatar and Irtusk would be dull and uneventful, how wrong could I be. Last night (10th October) I arrived at Ulaanbaatar train station at 8.30pm. Waiting to depart in the station was a huge train with with multiple carriages, clearly the trans - Siberian express. Walking to the front of the train I pushed to the front of the steps about to board when I was stopped by yet another person wearing an official uniform. I insisted that this was my train but after some discussion soon realised that I was about to board a train destined for China! Once on board the correct train I discovered that I was sharing a cabin again with the Aussie sisters. As we squeezed into our cabin with all ... read more
