On Tuesday, March 16th we arrived in Heidelberg, Germany. Arriving a little later than we had planned, time was limited but the highlight was visiting the Heidelberg Castle. Construction started before 1214, the long history of the castle and city deserving a book not a blog post. At night the view from the castle overlooking the city was absolutely amazing. Once checked in at the hotel most of us ran out to grab a bite to eat then returned to the hotel bar. It was a nice relaxing evening, drinking and trading stories with the bartender. Wednesday, March 17th we had a nice breakfast at the hotel restaurant then boarded the motor coach. We arrived in Stuttgart, Germany for our class program. The program was entitled “City for Children” and was put on by the City ... read more

Hello from Germany! The two Days in Hamburg have been fun. While I didn’t find the city itself to be as entertaining as Copenhagen, there was definitely plenty of stuff for us to do. We spent most of the first day on Sunday, March 14th traveling by bus and ferry boat. When we got to Hamburg we all just kind of relaxed after a long day. The highlight of the day was dinner at the Rathaus (Hamburg’s town hall.) Constructed between 1886 - 1897, it still houses its original governmental functions with the office of the First Mayor of Hamburg and the meeting rooms for Hamburg's parliament and senate (the city's executive). The meal was fantastic. This building is by far the most impressive government building I have ever seen (see photos). The second day was ... read more

Well, I made it to Copenhagen! The flight from Moline, IL to Detroit, MI on Thursday, March 11th wasn’t bad but the 8hr flight from Detroit to Amsterdam, Holland was a bit long. During the flight I watched the movie “Up” and tried unsuccessfully to get some sleep. Adjusting to the time change was FAR more difficult than I thought it would be; as I write this it is 2:45AM in Denmark / 8:50PM in Illinois. Luckily the flight from Amsterdam to Copenhagen was short and sweet! The first day in Copenhagen was wonderful! Early afternoon we went to an informational presentation on the impact the use of bicycles as a primary means of transportation has had on the city and citizens of Copenhagen. It was pretty interesting to listen to the rep from the Copenhagen ... read more

(Written March 4th, 2010) Well, I attended my last pre-trip PADM-282 class meeting at Drake University in Des Moines last night so I thought I’d give this whole Travel Blog thing a test run. Last night was fun. Dr.’s Meyer and Noe seemed to be just as excited as I am, as did my fellow DrakeSMART travelers. I wish I had been able to attend more of the informational meetings but that 6hr (roundtrip) drive is a tough one on a Wednesday night, right Sarah? It’s exactly 1 week till I depart for Copenhagen, Denmark. Having never traveled abroad, I am sure to be in for the experience of a lifetime! The good news is that I think I have everything in order: My dog will be in good hands, my bills for the month have ... read more
