…”Snow is falling all around me…” or not as the case may be in Siem Reap, Cambodia. So it’s Christmas here in this wonderful country and in the region of 32 degrees C. It turns out they make a bit of a fuss about it here as many places have been Westernised by the addition of Christmas Trees, fairly lights and Christmas songs playing in town. I was feeling a little emotional about the occasion as it’s the first time I have not spent it with my family and every time I heard “Driving Home For Christmas”, it would bring a tear to my eye! On the day of Christmas Eve, we made Christmas cards and the kids really got into the idea of Christmas being just a day away. To mark the occasion in the ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap September 19th 2012

Today is the day that I came away travelling for and what the last year has been building up to. I was finally on my way to Cambodia. After being picked up in a minivan, we were taken by ferry to the mainland and then to Poipet on the border of Thailand and Cambodia. Nothing could have prepared me for the border crossing. We were met by a guide who tried to con us into changing all our money into Thai Baht and then we were told we would change it for an excellent rate at the other side into Cambodian Riel. I have read about these scams before and I was not going to let my guard down, some however did and were royally ripped off! The entire group was even ripped off before we ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Chang September 10th 2012

Today was a very mixed day, having said goodbye to Fez, it was now time to say hello again to a dear friend, Guus that I met on Koh Tao. He only had 9 days to go before heading back home to Belgium so we decided to meet up again and spend his last days together. We met in town and boarded the bus to Trat where we would pick up the ferry to Koh Chang. Koh Chang is the second biggest island in Thailand and is a national park, so unlike Phuket (The largest island) it is covered in jungle that inhabits monkeys and apparently wild elephants. We arrived at the resort he had stayed at previously on Lonely Beach and got ourselves a bungalow that was only 2 minutes’ walk from the beach. Koh ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui August 31st 2012

We finally arrived in Bangkok after a long journey from Jordan. We were met at the airport by our guides as we had 6 hours before we were flying down to Koh Samui. We went to see the Temple of the Golden Buddha, The Temple of the Reclining Buddha and were given a lot of information about the history of the places. Unfortunately tiredness got the better of me and the information simply went in one ear and out of the other. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to do what the boys did and fall asleep as soon as we got in the car to move onto the next point of interest and to say my enthusiasm was wavering would be an understatement. The final stop we made was to a Gem Gallery and this was pretty ... read more

After leaving Koh Tao in Thailand at 9.15am on the 22nd august, I finally arrived in Jordan on the 23rdAugust at 4pm (after going back 4 hours in time). So all in all I had been travelling for about 36 hours to finally reach Jordan. Along the route I had a brief stopover in Qatar where I disembarked the plane and it was over 50 degrees!! Everything went very smoothly at the airport and I made it, finally to my destination. As I have learned a lot on my travels, things change and at very short notice. My friend, Fez, whom I was visiting in Jordan, was meant to be picking me up from the airport but unfortunately he got a flat tyre so I made my own way to the hotel. Not a problem, I’m ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao August 22nd 2012

So 3 weeks in Koh Tao turned into nearly a month. The island is incredible and so were all the people that i met. I arrived with an Austrian girl that i had met on the ferry frojm Chumphon and we decided to stay in a bungalow together until she left four days later. We stayed at O'Chai bungalows and they were lovely. After a few days i had met lots and lots of people from all over the world and it's true what everyone said to me, you will meet lots of people and never be on your own. I met a group of guys who had been on a diving course together and we hired an ATV (quad bike) between us to explore the island. It only took 15 mins to drive from one ... read more

Today i went to see Muay Thai fights at the booxing stadium on the island. It was really good to see the professionals fight and i thoroughly enjoyed it, there were even a couple of Westerners having a go and both of them won their fights. I have taken lots of photos for you all to see!... read more

So i arrived in Bangkok on the 27th July and this is where my journey reay begins! I was up early on my first day and took a walk around the sights and wow, just wow! Nothing could have quite prepared me for what I was about to see/smell!! Having lived in London for nearly ten years I know what overcrowding is like….or so I thought! It was packed full of people, raw sewage flowing through the streets and the smell nearly knocked me for six. As I was out of my hotel by 7am it was a really great opportunity to see Bangkok being brought to life with food stall upon food stall and the same with clothes and just about anything you want to get your hands on! The streets slowly got busier and ... read more

On the morning of the 27th July it was time to set off on another adventure. I was up at 6.30am (and throughout most of the night due to paranoia about not waking up and malaria tablet nightmares) and off I scurried to the airport. Everything went like clockwork until i popped to the loo at about 8.30 and came out to see that the departure board said 'final call' for my flight even though the time of departure was 9.40. Like a woman possessed i sprinted through the airport to my departure lounge, which, true to form, was the farthest possible gate from where i was (maybe i should have gone to a toilet a little closer to gate 144 than 101, hindsight eh?!). So i got to the check in desk and my boarding ... read more
