Sunday 16th October Its Mothers day here in Argentina today so the restaurants are packed:-) You may have wondered why there have been no retorts from Shane in this and the last blog. Well he has gone off to a Boca Juniors game with a group that Pilar, our host, has lined him up with this afternoon and I have decided to kick back and do nothing but catch up - catch up on sleep, catch up on washing, catch up on the blog and catch up on a big bag of chips!! lol Well I managed to catch up on the chips and the blog at least :-) It will be nice for him to do some blokey stuff and I think they have beers and pizza included after the game, so he will be ... read more

Saturday 9th October We arrived back in Quito yesterday and we are staying in the New town for a few days. Hotel Eugenia last night and Cayman Hostel for the next 2 days. It has a great garden and lounge room and the single beds we have become so accustomed too LOL. Brekky is great too.....eggs any way you want them!!! Have travelled up by Teleferico (Cable car) today to get a better view of the city. I cant believe how big Quito is - 50km in length through the valley. We cant see Mt Cotapaxi from here today as it is quite cloudy over the mountain, but we will see it first hand tomorrow as Shane wants to go for a climb. Its 4810 metres to the base camp. Soooo looking forward to THAT! :-) ... read more

Friday 7th October I cant help but wonder how you all are as I lay here in my hammock, listening to the birds and feeling the faint cool breeze sweep across our verandah, deep here in the Amazon jungle. Shane on the other hand is on the throne doing a sudoku puzzle. LOL Its been a bit of a mixed bag. When we arrived in Lago Agrio on Tuesday morning, we were hit with a wall of heat. I said "oh my god its so hot and humid!", to which Shane replied "Just remember whose idea it was to do this." And he continues to remind me to this day. We drove for about 2 hrs from the airport at extremely high speed around extremely tight corners, and just as I thought we couldnt take any ... read more

Saturday 1st October Our hostel has picked us up from the airport!! We had a feeling they were going to, and there they did. Its a little place in the heart of the Old City and on the oldest street in Quito. Kenya and her Mum Gloria have made us feel really welcome. The hostel rooms actually surround the restaurant downstairs so its pretty noisy. When the TV is on down there, its blaring, and if the music is one its blaring too. Sunday 2nd October The roads in the old city are closed to cars today so its all pedestrians and push bikes. Its so charming. We climbed to the top of the the Basilica this morning. What an amazing view of the city!! It has the tallest church towers in South America, and while ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos » Puerto Ayora October 1st 2011

Saturday 1st October The week has flown and boy are we pleased to be back on dry land! We had quite a few choppy afternoons and nights and as a result I felt better laying on my back in my cabin. The days were fabulous though and its on this that we will focus :-) Our first day we boarded the Millenium Catamaran. Samuel picked us up at the airport and then took us back to the boat in zodiac. We had a nice little cabin with twin beds and a small balcony. I do mean small as only one plastic chair fits on it and if you sit on the chair you cant see over the top. We've met a great bunch of people and they have already been on board for 6 nights. John ... read more

So we have flown today to Baltra Island in the Galapagos, and from there caught a bus to the ferry, which really only transports you across the river, and then to another bus to Puerto Ayora which is about 50 mins away. This place is gorgeous. It reminds me a little of Inverloch 20 years ago, but with a little more charm. There are lots of nice restaurants and the pier area is nicely decked out and covered with little marine Iguana's! The rocks below are dotted with orange and red crabs called Sally Lightfoot that also run up and down the walls with the Iguana! Our hotel doesnt have a name yet because it isnt finished or approved by the tourism board, but it is really nice, and operates above the Galapagos Deli where they ... read more

Sunday 25th September The time seems to be flying by so fast now! We arrived in Guayaquil on Friday at the Hostel Suites Madrid - a quaint, roomy, very clean and most importantly to one of us, very cheap place in the heart of the discoteque district it seems. We have booked our Galapagos trip AND a trip to the Amazon from here. Mucho exciteda! We have secured ourselves 5 days/4 nights on a luxury catamarran called Millenium for Monday 26th. Poor Sixto is still looking a little pale having had to empty the wallet and the bank account to pay for these 2 treasures. Never fear - he'll get on that boat tomorrow and see that it was all worth it. LOL Shane says: Pale's not the word. This girl (Rio) justs loves spending. I've ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores September 23rd 2011

Friday 23rd September We are sitting at the airport now awaiting our flight to Guayaquil. We will stay 2 nights there before flying to the Galapagos Islands. We think we have arranged a pretty decent cruise in Galapagos, and the last minute deals enable us to upgrade from tourist grade to a luxury grade catamaran for about the same price. Lets hope so anyway. Lima was the stop over we needed to charge our batteries. We booked a wonderful apartment in Miraflores for 5 days, which of course enabled us to cook every night. We have really missed that, so a good feed of steak and veg, pasta and garlic bread have left us feeling almost normal again. Our apartment also has a private elevator that opens directly on to our front door! We only spent ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu September 18th 2011

Friday 16th September This is the day!! Its the realisation that after so many years of dreaming we could one day be standing in Machu Picchu, that this is THE day!! I was so excited I could wet myself! Raced down to brekky. Nobody to be found. We walk out to the kitchen to try and find someone, look at the state of the kitchen, grab a bread roll, decide nah, this is disgusting, take our bags and we're on our way! This place is the crappiest place we have been so far. Having left Crapsville behind us, we head off on the bus for the 30 min ride to Macchu Picchu. We arrive at about 7am, and discover we can actually go into the ruins and come back out to meet our guide so we ... read more

Thursday 15th September All aboard Peru Rail to Aguas Calientes! We had both expected this fair weather tourist stop over for the Inca trail to be quite dirty and seedy, and I suppose where the locals live it could be considered just that. Most tourists stay in over priced hostels and hotels and blow in and blow out overnight to do the Inca trail. When we first arrived In Cusco on Sunday night we booked our tickets as a sort of package, so bus return Cusco>Olly, train return from Olly>Aguas, bus to Macchu Picchu and also our accommodation in Aguas on Thursday night at the Golden House Inn. Looked beautiful on the board at the office and the driver was picking us up and taking us there when we arrived in Aguas Calientes. We knew something ... read more
