04-17-10 I have officially kicked off the start of the 2010 Titanic Grand Tour. According to the rules it only took one iceberg to sink tons of the Titanic. In one of the first twenty-five town signs you score, one of the towns must end in BURG (rules state that the following spelling are acceptable: burg, berg, bergh or burgh). So I left the house this morning around 8:30 with four towns on my list that ended in BURG. First stop was Stateburg which is about 30 minutes from my house off Hwy. 378 on Hwy. 261. I made the quick trip and got excited when I saw the sign on 378 that indicated that Stateburg was just two miles up 261. I rode up and down that road and found a small sign that stated ... read more

04-15-10 After six weeks of waiting my rally flag for the 2010 Titanic Grand Tour arrived in my mailbox. The Tour is a six month long rally were a rider chases down town signs that end in “TON” or “BURG”. I took advantage of the cold winter to spend my evening studying maps of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. Now that the flag has arrived; the fun can begin! The Rules: 1) Polaroid photos, digital prints, or standard photos are all acceptable. Photos may also be submitted on CD or on SD card. Photos may not be emailed. 2) To be considered a finisher you must accumulate 25 points. You will then earn a Grand Tour shirt and entry into first level of prizes. It took only one Berg to bring down the Titanic, so ... read more

March 27, 2010 Against my wife’s advice I left the house at 8:15 a.m. with just my summer mesh Joe Rocket riding jacket and pants on. I did think enough to layer my clothing a little. I wore my Rocky under garments, a long sleeve t-shirt and lastly I put the rain liner in my riding pants. So I headed off into the cool morning air towards Camden, SC to meet up with my friend Jim who was riding in from Myrtle Beach. Thank god it was only a 30 minute trip up Hwy. 601 to the Pilot Station where I was meeting Jim. I did not realize that I had no gas in the Shadow. Half way to our meeting spot I had to switch on the reserve tank. Once there I filled up both ... read more

For the past few months I have been planning a number of major upgrades to the Shadow. I have been taking small steps towards turning this once calm little around town bike into a real Long Distance rider. The steps I have taken this weekend, with the help of friends, has gotten this LD Shadow a little closer to a comfortable long distance rider. I ordered a 3 gal. racing fuel cell from Jaz to replace the little 1.6 gal. milk jug aux. tank that I mounted on the rear luggage rack last year. I also ordered a set of Hyper Lights from Cycle Gadgets . I went with the upgraded version that also acts as running lights. The last thing I hoped to get done this weekend was to clean up the rat’s nest of ... read more

01-03-10 About a week ago my friend Jim from Myrtle Beach, SC called and asked if I wanted to meet him and Jeff at Lone Star BBQ in Santee, SC. At the time that I said yes, we were having a warm spell with the weather and I felt sure it would be a fun ride. Last night I started having second thoughts when I checked the weather report and found out that the overnight low was going to be 17 degrees. When I got up this morning I was less than happy to read that the thermometer on the front porch indicated a chilly 24. The way to start out any winter ride is with layers and layers of clothing, that is if you don’t have any electric gear to keep you warm. I started ... read more

12-06-09 It was early when I got out of bed and headed out to the Shadow, not only early but cold. As I walked down the front steps the thermometer caught my eye; 29 degrees. It was a good thing that I decided to layer my clothing. Under my winter motorcycle gear I was wearing a pair of long johns; long sleeve t-shirt, mock turtleneck, and a neck warmer. On my feet I had on two pairs of ski socks, and on my hands I was wearing go good pair of deerskin winter gloves, with liners. I had to use the choke to get the bike started. Before I got to the end of the driveway the Shadow coughed so I switched on the reserve fuel. Five miles down the road I pulled into Bunky’s for ... read more

12-01-09 While reading different post on the Motorcycle Tourers Forum I saw an interesting post about custom fitted earphones that are both easy to make and work very well. I clicked onto the link for EarFuze and started reading the product information. The custom earphones looked like a solution to a problem that I have been having while taking some of my long distance motorcycle rides. After much consideration and a few phone calls I decided to give them a try and placed my order. For the past 12 months I have been using Skull Candy ear buds to link my XM Radio and my GPS to my ears. The Skull Candy had a great sound, especially for the $29.99 price, but after 45 minutes or so they would start to become uncom... read more

11-07-09 A good night sleep was traded for Christmas money. I was called into work off duty the night before the RTE that I was hosting in my hometown. Friday was scheduled so I could be a good host on Saturday, but as fate would have it my schedule changed. On Friday I ended up working at my landscape business from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. having just enough time to get home and jump into the shower to do police work from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning. I was in bed by 7:30 in the morning and three hours later I was on the Shadow headed to Bunky’s Market. I must say I was dog tired. Before I go any further with my latest BLOG adventure I must take a second to answer ... read more

10-30-09 Every year I try to make the Shadow a little more comfortable. This winter I have some neat things planned to make it easier to stay in the saddle for longer periods of times. We all know that the only way to put the miles on the odometer is to keep the bike in the road. This past riding season I was able to add a small aux. fuel cell, XM Radio and a good used GPS. The biggest issue I had when I did my Bun Burner ride (1500 miles in 36 hours) was that my legs would cramp up. I had no way of stretching them out while traveling down the road. So when my fuel window would come up (presently 150 miles) I would have to spend a few minutes off the ... read more

The alarm clock went off at 4:45 a.m. This usually would not be a problem but I am currently on night shift at the PD and this is the time of morning that my body is getting ready for bed, not getting up. On top of that, this is the first out of state trip I have made on the bike since my accident and I was a little nervous; causing me to not sleep very well. I was scheduled to meet my friend Andy in Graniteville, SC at 7 a.m., which meant that I had to be on my way by 5:30. When I went outside to get on the bike everything was wet. It had been raining a good part of the night and I was glad that the rain had stopped. The weather ... read more
